Quote from the video: "boost in the Fediverse" ❤️

I thought it was time to make a little life update video, so here you go!

1 minute 40 seconds: How is the correct way to say it @mirlo ?

Is it on purpose that instead of giving users good navigation and filtering tools, services like Youtube, Netflix and Spotify instead wants to give you a set menu so to speak?

I KNOW there are so much amazing music, art and even videos that would just be called "content" out there, but it takes so much effort to sort thru the shallow crap.

The planet is heating. Bombs are falling. Conflicts are multiplying. Desperation and fear divides us. There is a sense of hopelessness in the air.

Artists we need your art!

We need your hope. We need your kindness. We need to remember the feeling of togetherness. We need to calm down and escape for a minute, to get out of the panic so we can pull ourself together and get back to work.

Back to work on being kind. Back to work on looking for a better way.

Back to work on changing the tide.

Is there a free software that is good for designing zines?

I know there is the scissers and Xerox method but I was more thinking to do a computer design and having it printed in a shop.

So something where I could add all the elements, sort them in the correct layout for printing and export pdf and correct colors and all that stuff.

I know there are zinemakers in on Fedi.

Any tips?

The upcoming release will feature "unlisted releases", that is, you can add the flag "unlisted" to the release manifest/section to hide it from all publicly accessible pages, while still being able to visit the page if you know the permalink.

There are some minor implications for label mode though, which I'd be happy to have double-checked - if you're a (current or potential) faircamp site operator, do you have any thoughts on this?

"An unlisted release is never visible on the home/index page.

In label mode there are some additional intricacies: An artist that has only unlisted releases is not visible on the home/index page, but in turn, all of these unlisted releases are visible on the artist page, as the artist page itself is implicitly unlisted then. If however, an artist has even just a single listed release, it becomes visible on the home/index page, and on the artist page itself all unlisted releases are not visible anymore."

(this can also be commented on in the issue: https://codeberg.org/simonrepp/faircamp/issues/84)

This is a great feature! I was wondering, are there any metadata telling search index to not index these sites as well?

I have already told robots.txt to not index a folder on my website, but here they will be in the same folder.

I read this today on the fediverse: "I don’t think [static site generators] work for regular people - too much command line for grandma to use."

This is a surprisingly common sentiment among many people, on which I'd like to weigh in:

  1. Conflating static site generation with "terminal interface" is technically wrong and conceptually counterproductive. I think part of why there isn't so much experimentation and diversity in the SSG space is because so many people are stuck with a mindset of the past (Tom-Preston Werner's «Blogging Like a Hacker»¹ was back in 2008!) instead of cultivating an awareness and imagination for what already is (and what else could be) there instead.

  2. I don't know how far accessibility of SSGs can be pushed for general audiences in the end and where we will meet hard boundaries, but I feel that there is still so much untapped potential and space to try things, and not so many people taking notice or trying to go there. Be courageous and explore!

  3. Correct usage of "grandma" is for instance "My grandma wrote a python script to detect reactionary jokes on the fediverse, and today she found a particularly bad one". The term the author was looking for is "non-technical audience". You're welcome, author!

@freebliss

I feel like this is sorta one of those "this is not technically true, but it is practically true and doesn't have to continue to be true" situations, would you agree?

Like if I would ask for a static site generator the chance is pretty high that the first three someone would point me towards would be terminal based.

But of course this does not have to be true!

I think that making easy gui experiences might be a good way to empower non hackers/non wannabe hackers.

@freebliss

Of course I also think we should learn people to get more hackery and less I-only-use-polished-capitalistic-software, but I guess that is a different (allthought very related) discussion maybe...

The internet is looking more and more like the physical life.

People and corporations everywhere filling the world with boring stuff to try to make money, and cool people making interesting stuff that I am having trouble finding because of the start of this sentence.

@freebliss

This looks veeerry cool! As a Faircamp lover and video maker this looks like a very nice project!

I have already switched to not using Youtube embeds on my website but just regular html video players.

This looks like a nice sollution to make a more browsable library of videos.

Looking forward to testing it out!

i am trying to listen closer to what my soul is telling me i should spend my energy on.

what is your favorite book about the artist life?

to combat fear and tune into the burning need to create. to deal with the fear and judgement of the world, and your own internalization of this?

i know what i am supposed to do, but there are obstacles.

please give me book (or i guess other) tips.

much love from your friendly experimental electronic musician ❤️

Calling all RSS ninjas!

I am handwriting my RSS feed at https://lisleg.com/blog

Things are working well. At least in my usual reader.

If I plop the feed into https://rssviewer.app/ or RSS mobile on iOS there are problems:

Videos and images are not scaling correctly and are stretching well outside the screen.

Is my RSS sub par or should we just cancel these readers?

I have been putting my whole post within <![CDATA[ ]]>
and have been writing it as HTML.

Is this a good approach?

    I am having problem updating Faircamp from 0.10.1 to 0.11.0

    When I run brew upgrade faircamp I end up here.

    I tried removing the file, but still same.

    I am on a MacOS 11.4 system if that makes a difference.

    @kel @freebliss @themissingcow

    Did brew edit faircamp, what am I looking for here?

    Comfortable navigating vi so no problem.

    @lislegaard@sonomu.club avatar

    @kel @freebliss @themissingcow

    Hmmm.

    I uninstalled Faircamp, so now I also have nothing to edit, and I can't install it again because I get the same error.

    lislegaard,
    @lislegaard@sonomu.club avatar

    @kel @freebliss @themissingcow

    No worries.

    I tried uninstalling

    brew uninstall faircamp (to try to remove everything)

    then brew install faircamp (to try start fresh)

    got the same error

    then when I do brew edit faircamp it says:
    Error: Invalid usage: faircamp doesn't exist on disk

    Sorry if unclear!

    lislegaard,
    @lislegaard@sonomu.club avatar

    @kel @freebliss @themissingcow

    Thanks for all the help anyways! Do you know if there is a way to install 0.10.1 again in the meantime.

    (maybe it is finally time to update this whole machine's os and everything)

    lislegaard,
    @lislegaard@sonomu.club avatar

    Havn't tried tap yet, waiting for brew upgrade to finish.

    Ok I just need to ask. Are we sure there isn't a mismatch between what homebrew is looking for and what is being provided?

    If I download https://codeberg.org/simonrepp/faircamp/archive/0.11.0.tar.gz

    Then go

    shasum -a 256 path-to-the-file

    I get 189361bd0d586e782990d48b1a2bfda5507091db7a28e119b1dc514ffdd9fca1

    But Homebrew is looking for dc92b9fd78e9e791f5fecd97a11690dc61b06af9168967c0f15d4db38c3c7dc5

    I don't really know about this stuff but do we not need to either update brew or the file?
