Looking at the behavior of some CEOs, I feel like they'd actually be the easiest people to replace with AI

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

Companies with an AI C-suite will be more efficient and therefore more competitive than old, slow, human corporate executives. If you want the company you work for to succeed and maximize shareholder value, encourage your higher-ups to take a break and replace themselves with AI!

Oh, what's that you say? They insist their job is too complex for an AI and they can't be replaced? Nonsense! They need to learn to adapt to this new technological revolution! It's the inevitable future!

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

Just imagine how much money companies would save by automating the C-suite!

No more pesky multimillion dollar yearly bonuses!

No more stock payouts!

No private jet!

No sexual harassment hush money payments!

I mean, LLMs would make perfect CEOs

  • Confident
  • Persuasive
  • Well read
  • Never admits a mistake, and will degrade you if you point one out to it
  • Can make up reasonable sounding bullshit on the spot to explain their every action
  • Relies on exploiting the unpaid labor of thousands of people
  • Lives in a reality they invent for themselves
  • Fundamentally uncreative

Weakness and ignorance are not barriers to survival, but arrogance is — Cixin Liu (from Death's End — Three Body Problem, book 3)

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

This series is interesting, but it's also surprisingly been kind of depressing. It's a fundamentally pessimistic take on human nature that hits too close to home. In context of the challenge we face with global warming, it's not encouraging.

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

This series is just an endless sequence of humanity thinking it's got it all figured out, only to discover (painfully) that it's completely misjudged the situation, and then narrowly escapes absolute extinction through sheer blind luck.

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

I'm reading these books and seeing exactly the same kind of attitude present in current moment. It's the same attitude I see around EVs and renewable energy. If only we just switch to all EVs powered by solar power, then everything will be fine. The solution is obvious. Just do this thing and the problem is solved.

Yeah, maybe... until it isn't

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

As I read this series, all I can think about is that same idea that we're massively underestimating the scale and nature of the challenge.

I worry that by the time we figure out (painfully) that our "solutions" are not enough — not only not enough, but so pathetically insufficient that we would have been better off doing nothing — it'll be too late to do anything but stare into the abyss and weep.

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

I fear that we think we'll be fine because we've mastered checkers, while nature is busy playing a dozen games of chess simultaneously — not only out of our depth, but entirely the wrong strategy and goals.

We think we understand what will happen with global warming, but that doesn't mean we do, and it doesn't mean we're adequately prepared. The planet will kill us if we're wrong. ALL of us.

And we're all just carrying on like normal.

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

I need to relax. What am I afraid of, exactly?

Dying? That's going to happen eventually no matter what.

The unknown? When have I ever known what was going to happen to me?

Suffering? That's life, baybeee

Either I'll live through it, or I won't. And if I don't, then there won't be a 'me' around anymore to worry about it

I really love how the web has become completely unusable without an ad blocker

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

Also just an FYI to all the websites that ask me to turn off my ad blocker: I technically don't use an ad blocker. I use ublock origin, which blocks third party JavaScript.

That doesn't stop you from displaying ads on your site, it stops you from displaying Google's ads on your site

Some of you might be like, "Mallory, this global warming thing sounds pretty bad. What can I do to stop it?"

You personally? Nothing.

Nothing short of literally stopping all burning of carbon today will stop it. It's locked in at this point, and nothing you do will have any effect in your lifetime.

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

If you want to help limit the damage so that your children, grandchildren, etc have a nice, comfortable planet to live on, there's a few things you can do:

  • Don't fly, like ever
  • Don't drive
  • If you have to drive, minimize how much and get a plug-in hybrid or full EV
  • Stop eating meat
  • If you can't or don't want to stop eating meat, avoid eating pork and especially beef
  • Eat less in general
  • Buy less
  • Avoid using plastics when possible, especially single-use plastics

🧵

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

If some or all of that seems impossible, that's exactly the problem that got us into this mess. Real, meaningful change will require collective action on a societal level. Our society is built on cheap fossil fuels, and getting away from that will require everything to change. We aren't going to recycle our way out of this, folks.

🧵

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

I mention this stuff because if you're doing any of things on that list, you're doing what you can on your own, and there's no use feeling personally guilty about what's happening.

The fact that our society is built around cars is not your fault. The fact that most goods are made overseas and shipped to you via plane or boat isnt your fault. The fact that the energy required for literally everything you do and buy is predominantly from fossil fuels isn't your fault.

🧵

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

We need to change how our society works from the ground up. That will require collective action. It will require redistribution of wealth. It will require enhanced and expanded social services.

Vote. Protest. Strike.

Does anyone have any first hand accounts of people who dislike WFH and want to transition RTO?

I don't mean your CEO's and bosses... I mean the workers. Is that really a thing?

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

@mentallyalex I go back and forth on it. I like the freedom from the commute, being able to wear sweat pants, and generally having a more comfortable environment to work in.

But the flip side is that I feel pretty isolated and disconnected from my coworkers. When I was in the office I liked having an idea what other people were working on, and being able to chat about random stuff with people while getting coffee or eating lunch.

I think overall it's a net loss for me, if only marginally.

Is there such thing as a period tracking app that is made for trans people? Like, I've downloaded a few and like the first thing they ask is when the last time you had your period. The whole reason I'm interested in tracking my symptoms is because I don't know when my period is, or if I even have a cycle!

Annoying work thing: being asked to give a short 5-10 minute progress update on a thing, being last on the list, and ending up almost running out of time in the meeting to do your update because the other people go over by like 10-15 minutes

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

@miah Yeah, we a standup meeting like that. My boss explicitly said it is supposed to be done in like 10 minutes, but it almost always ends up being 30
