Fledgling trans girl that likes to talk nerdy, perform tech wizardry, do mad science, post occasional anti-capitalist and climate-rage induced rants, and show off her latest Lego builds. There will be selfies.

Swears like a sailor, so you best be okay with that.

Looking at the behavior of some CEOs, I feel like they'd actually be the easiest people to replace with AI

Is there such thing as a period tracking app that is made for trans people? Like, I've downloaded a few and like the first thing they ask is when the last time you had your period. The whole reason I'm interested in tracking my symptoms is because I don't know when my period is, or if I even have a cycle!

I've stopped caring about new tech and become more political because in general we have sufficient technology to make everyone's lives better.

The problem isn't that we don't have enough or good enough technology. The problem is that the people in power aren't interested in making everyone's lives better.

Annoying work thing: being asked to give a short 5-10 minute progress update on a thing, being last on the list, and ending up almost running out of time in the meeting to do your update because the other people go over by like 10-15 minutes

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

@miah Yeah, we a standup meeting like that. My boss explicitly said it is supposed to be done in like 10 minutes, but it almost always ends up being 30

@kkarhan It's kind of sad/funny how accurate that video still is even though it's 9 years old lol

The Eagle Nebula (Messier 16) and the Pillars of Creation; as seen from my driveway.

This was shot with a tiny telescope (250mm focal length and 2” aperture). #astrophotography

I'm not into Star Wars that much (gasp), so watching the latest Ahsoka trailer I was like, "meh," but then I discovered Mary Elizabeth Winstead is in it (she's the green lady alien) and now I'm much more interested.

I will watch anything with her in it :blob_heart_eyes:

Does anyone have any first hand accounts of people who dislike WFH and want to transition RTO?

I don't mean your CEO's and bosses... I mean the workers. Is that really a thing?

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

@mentallyalex I go back and forth on it. I like the freedom from the commute, being able to wear sweat pants, and generally having a more comfortable environment to work in.

But the flip side is that I feel pretty isolated and disconnected from my coworkers. When I was in the office I liked having an idea what other people were working on, and being able to chat about random stuff with people while getting coffee or eating lunch.

I think overall it's a net loss for me, if only marginally.

I found the ISO for the official Sony PS2 SDK, and it drives me insane because while I'm poking around at the stuff inside my brain is just like, "You can't legally use any of this shit to do anything."

Like, fuck you Sony. You stopped making and selling the fucking console like a decade ago. Let us use the tools to do weird nerd shit. It makes no difference to you anymore.

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

Fucking capitalism can kiss my ass.

Humans deserve to go extinct if this is how we behave. There are millions of PS2 consoles still floating around that could be used to do something new and interesting, but that can't happen because profit

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

No, let's just build entire new systems from scratch, even though it means leveling mountains, clear cutting rainforests, and polluting the environment with CO2 and other fun chemicals.

Like, I realize that the PS3, PS4, and PS5 are all technically superior to the PS2. The games look a lot better, and it makes sense to make new hardware because of it.

But that doesn't mean that old hardware is instantly useless, or that it will "cannibalize" sales of your new hardware. People will buy the new thing if it is actually better. If your business model relies on forcefully deprecating old products, you're a lot of why the planet is burning. Thanks for nothing

Can we stop building new hardware for a bit? I don't even understand how hardware that was built 20-30 years ago works, let alone anything today.

Like, I spent last weekend implementing the CORDIC algorithm, which was invented in 1956, and I'm still not done with everything that you can do with it.

I just want to spend all my time learning how all this crazy computer stuff works. I want to reverse engineer stuff like the PS2 or N64 CPUs. The more I dig into stuff, the more everything seems like it's just mysterious sorcery

How does IEEE-754 work? Magic
How does AXI work? Magic
How does RISC-V work? Magic
How do I implement Linux on a new architecture? Magic
USB? Magic
PCI Express? Magic
GPUs? Magic
MMUs? Magic

I'm starting to understand the retrocomputing people that are building 8-bit and 16-bit computers. Anything newer than that is too much for a single person to really understand in any great detail

STOP MAKING FPUs

  • NUMBERS WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO HAVE AN ARBITRARY NUMBER OF DECIMAL POINTS

  • YEARS of floating-point operations, and NO REAL-WORLD USE FOUND FOR COMPUTING FRACTIONS

  • Need to compute a fraction anyway? We have that already, it's called FIXED-POINT MATH

  • "The result from the calculation was NaN. This number is denormalized." - Statements dreamed up by the utterly deranged.

"Hello, I would like to divide two double-precision numbers"
THEY HAVE PLAYED US FOR ABSOLUTE FOOLS

One thing that was never emphasized enough in history class is that historical events keep happening as you get older and that it's quite stressful
