always a good sign when you call an oscilloscope manufacturer to sanity-check a product choice, then explain your problem space and when you mention LPDDR3 they say "what's that?"

If you're building a CLI tool that can churn on large amounts of data for hours and you don't implement any kind of progress output, we won't become friends.

(And no, it refuses to work with stdin, else I would've just used pv and be done.)

we may have found a really bizarre bug in the Intel I219-V ethernet controller

does it involve offloading features or jumbo frames? both are severely broken.

holy shit, i... solved bufferbloat (in one direction) in my userspace Python Linux network interface card driver in Glasgow?

i'm sending 200 Mbps of spam to Wanda's laptop right now (most of which doesn't fit into the 100M link) and pings never go above 25ms

also she gets acceptable realtime performance (ssh, etc)

I: g.applet.interface.ethernet_rgmii: usb->os pps= 16 Mbps= 0.03
I: g.applet.interface.ethernet_rgmii: os->usb pps=17862 Mbps=215.87

@niconiconi @gsuberland @DM_Ronin I can do CT inspection on small boards (small enough to fit in all rotations into the chamber), but that's not often the case.

Did work for a small sensor PCB, though.

✔ make one part of a RGMII MAC work by adding LUT4s to a design that do nothing
✔ make the other part of the RGMII MAC work by rearranging some of the wires to connect the exact same pins but with different wires adjacent to each other

today is sorcery day

manawyrm,
@manawyrm@chaos.social avatar

@whitequark and some truely atrocious buffer bloat :)

where is Dave Taht when we need him? 😹

manawyrm,
@manawyrm@chaos.social avatar

@whitequark but 235ms under load according to speedtest.net.

I'm guessing that's already noticable when just surfing the web via the gadget...

manawyrm,
@manawyrm@chaos.social avatar

@whitequark I didn't actually want to say: "you'll need to fix that", I don't think anyone's going to try and build a router with a glasgow 😹

just mostly a fun real-world example for buffer handling.

manawyrm,
@manawyrm@chaos.social avatar

@whitequark @foone synchronized catgirls :3

manawyrm,
@manawyrm@chaos.social avatar

@whitequark yeah, that's classic buffer bloat behaviour and one of the biggest problems when building routers :)

when their cpu is exhausted, things also start to suck.
it's the typical "uploading a file kills my video call", which doesn't actually have to be a problem (these days).

manawyrm,
@manawyrm@chaos.social avatar

@whitequark i don't think it's a problem which you should try to solve -- even the purpose-built USB NICs suck at this -- which is (one of the many reasons) why USB NICs suck so much in general :D
