Als gestern jemand fragte "wann habt ihr eigentlich das letzte Mal ein Backup eures Laptops auf ein Medium gemacht, das ihr nicht bei der dabei haben werdet", hatte ich nen Bonustask vor der Anreise gewonnen.

Aber: Backup ist jetzt in Salt konfiguriert und damit in Zukunft relativ einfach automatisiert auf neuen Kisten einrichtbar.

Und läuft gerade.

Apple ships drivers for very high speed Mellanox network cards in macOS & iOS now!

We connected an iPad (and a MacBook) to a 25GBit/s ConnectX-4 network card!

10322 MBit/s throughput on an iPad, 20476 MBit/s throughput on a MacBook.

@scy @sandzwerg IPA kann sich da nicht seit Monaten ansammeln -- das ist nach wenigen Minuten bereits komplett weg.

Kipp mal nen Schnappsglas IPA draussen aus, das ist nach 1min komplett verdampft.

Da muss noch was anderes gesammelt oder gewachsen sein.

The wifi on my Thinkpad running Linux works really, really bad and I don't understand why, and it seems to only behave this way intermittently

Speed test on desktop with ethernet: 804 Mbps down, 500 Mbps up

Speed test on laptop with wifi: 1-4 Mbps down, upload test simply crashes and sends no data (this is the Google/MLabs internet test), meanwhile I'm downloading a new Rust with Rustup and it's going at 300kb/s which takes a long time

@mcc the better question is just: what card is you laptop using (run lspci)?

there are some vendors that are just trash (Realtek, Broadcom, etc.) and some that might interact weirdly with some router vendors (MediaTek, etc.).

@mcc that's a pretty okay card (and driver).

do other devices behave better? otherwise, I'd focus on the access points/router.

just swapping it out with an Intel card (like an AX210) is also always an option, they're cheap (like 15-20$) and might work better (in this scenario).
(look for a picture of your laptops internals first to check that the wifi module isn't soldered down)

About Signal… One more time… Forcing people to verify one of their xkeyscore strong selectors (their MSISDN, i.e. „phone number“) in order to use a service is a bad idea. Nudging them constantly to volunteer their phone‘s contact list - on top of already getting access to their social graph of verified contacts - is even worse. @nblr But this is also very much Google's awful UX with their account handling on devices.

Signing into one account somewhere will basically automatically "distribute" that login to the system, all other apps, Drive, Photos, YouTube, etc.

The same BS Microsoft/Windows is doing with their accounts now (where even signing into a company Office account is enough to affect / infect the whole OS install)... 🙃

Die NVidia 4070 Windows-Kiste habe ich nicht probiert, aber weiß, daß die bei 85W idle ist und bei Horizon: Forbidden West bei 400W peaked.

@isotopp @Lalufu Da ich annehme -- dass das normalerweise deine Computerspielkiste ist, ist das eine sehr sehr gute Wahl :)

Wobei wir neulich auch eine Prod-Workload gehabt haben (ueber die ich leider noch nicht so richtig sprechen darf), die auf einer CPU aus der gleichen Serie (mit genug Cache) ploetzlich 12x (!!!) schneller wurde.
