That 47 year old space probe (N=2) can get software updates, but this one year old internet connected device (N≥10000) is actually electronic waste.

Sure.

There is approximately exactly one multi-millionaire capitalist you should listen to, and it's Gary Stevenson.

Today's topic: the ongoing productivity crisis.

@xtaldave @graemewinter and apparently one of the features of the AMOC collapse will be more stationary weather, so that'll be something to look forward to.

@xtaldave @graemewinter don't both of you live in the Thames Water catchment area? Then at least you know that your fresh water supply is safe and sewage and storm drains are well maintained 👀

Hot take:

Every terminal emulator that interprets "bold" as "make the foreground color brighter" has a bug.

Every terminal program that relies on "bold" to be interpreted as "make the foreground color brighter" has a bug.

Foreground colors 90 to 97 (and, by the way, background colors 100 to 107) exist and are unambiguous. Use them, ffs.

App developers: if you use notifications very sparingly, for things that I actually care about, I'll leave them turned on and even appreciate them.

But if you abuse notifications and hit me with too many, I'll block notifications from your app. Globally. All of them. And then I'll forget about it, and never revisit that decision.

Once you hit that point, it's too late. You ain't coming back.

Think about it before you decide to do notifications.

Shocking take: Could it have been ... at privatisation?

Public utilities do not need to make a profit. They are there to enable society. Suggesting to privatise the road network would be hilariously unpopular.

I can't say that I have seen this in UK academia, but I do have experienced this in UK everyday life and in business. This is the first time I've seen it spelled out like this, and it rings true. https://social.coop/@adamgreenfield/112163497049305581

The example that first came to my mind is referred NHS specialist appointments that are always confirmed by letter, and the letter is timed to arrive a day before the appointment. Royal Mail sometimes has week long delays due to understaffing.

In business I've heard of a software engineer wanting reliable network storage, but the IT team not monitoring that themselves. So now the SE has to do sysadmin tasks to do their own job. And then explain to the actual sysadmins when their stuff is broken

markus,
@markus@uxp.de avatar

As a German it's hilarious to watch those layered processes in action when you need to prove your identity in a country that deliberately decided to not have ID documents.

But now does require ID to vote. Or buy scissors at Tesco.

Eek. Apparently liblzma (part of the xz package) has a backdoor in versions 5.6.0 and 5.6.1, causing SSH to be compromised.

https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2024/03/29/4

This might even have been done on purpose by the upstream devs.

Developing story, please take with a grain of salt.

The 5.6 versions are somewhat recent, depending on how bleeding edge your distro is you might not be affected.

Laughter in public? Jail. (Laughing in a basement is allowed tho)
Smile? Believe it or not, jail.
