anyone got a good suggestion for where to get ? I'm looking for disks ~4mm in diameter or long thin bars (~50mm x 4mm x ? )

searching on amazon sucks.

The sound of the 3D printer has been bothering wifey (and me). So I was like "let's enclose this puppy!", after pricing plexiglass and realizing "hoshit! that stuff ain't cheap" (nevermind figuring out all the other parts needed to hold it together + time to design + build + whatever) I decided to just do some research and buy one + some cheap butyl sound deadening mat + some cheap acoustic foam. Applied points from Amex and total cost was ~$100! less than the raw plexiglass!

Well, it's taken me 3 months, but i finally cleaned the stuck key in my Advantage Pro 360. I must admit that I was so annoyed with the experience up to that point that I dragged my feet.

In the meantime I've been typing on the MoErgo . It's a very decent keyboard with a dramatically superior software experience, when it comes to customizing the layout.

However...

Any knowledgeable lovers out there?

Our local corvids are skittish in the extreme. Doesn't matter how calm or non-threatening, or far away a person is. If they see you, they fly. We suspect someone's been shooting them.

anyone have any suggestions for how to teach them that we're good people who have seed for them? They fly away so far that they couldn't even watch us put out seeds and come back when we leave.

I've been down a rabbit hole looking for makeup remover wipes that don't suck.

In amazon i click on each one, click the 1 star reviews, and almost without exception every one is all "I used these for years, they were great, now they've changed the formula and they stink/burn/both/gave me a rash/caused dermatitis/whatever." the others were some variant on "these don't remove anything"

So I was like "well...maybe baby wipes?" but all of THOSE were "they changed the formula"... except 1

Audible started allowing “AI” generated audiobooks ( > 40,000 so far ) but provides no mechanism to filter them out.

Voice actors bring stories to life. Computer voices destroy emotional moments and massacre the sentiment with which phrases are expressed.

This is absolutely terrible

Almost every day I unplug these 3 cables, & take my laptop to the living room. The next morning I have to plug them all in again. For years I've wished someone made a dock that would let me just pull them out and shove them back in in one go.

I just realized that
a) i have a 3D printer
b) i now know how to use a CAD program that'd make modeling that pretty easy.

So um... yeah.

Also, I really hate how limiting was / is. It should be a tool that can grow with you.

Another teachable moment:

I may have broken https://www.1001fonts.com/

If so. I'm sorry.

I was annoyed with how few fonts it allowed me to view at a go, so i just tweaked the pull-down to let me submit a request for 10,000 fonts. (just a random big number. Now, if you try and load any page it presents this.

1.0 has been announced
Ferret is a proxy that sits between your drivers & a db converting mongo queries into postgres SQL and using PG for the persistence.

https://www.ferretdb.io/

I am finding myself at a complete loss as to any practical reason why someone would want to use this. The ONLY case i can make for it is that it satisfies people who are zealous about open source licenses and aren't happy with Mongo's.

What am i missing?

having a discussion on slack. friendly seeming back and forth about test failure i introduced.

Couple minutes later, a DM from the CTO / (my manager): "Kay, i’ll ping you after lunch"

😱 terror.

Being i'm constantly in fear of allistic people on slack thinking i'm arguing or violating some invisible social rule they can't actually describe.

few seconds later...

"blah blah ... like you to take over CI build responsibility... blah blah "

@viticci recommend Mimestream as the only decent mac mail client. I'll take him at his word, but this is also a great example of how Google & other big co.s "embrace, extend, extinguish" and why it's so dangerous to have Meta (or google) federate.

They embraced email, extended email with custom (good) APIs, & we're gradually seeing all the good mail clients being written GMail only. They may not extinguish because of Microsoft in offices, but they'll get pretty far towards it.

Someone posted an image of bumper sticker that said "Slow down the speed at which you form an opinion on things you don't fully understand"

I get what they're saying, but it's addressing the symptom & not the actual problem.

We NEED to form opinions on things we don't fully understand in order to survive and navigate unfamiliar situations.

The problem is not that people have uninformed half-baked opinions. The problem is that people refuse to let go of them when they're shown to be false.

I have been on adderall (when available to purchase) for like a year now. And apparently now i have to sign a "drug contract" with the state of Vermont if i want to get a refill.

Like. WTF? It's already illegal to sell it / give it away. A contract can't make it MORE illegal, and if i was doing shady shit i'd lie anyways.

How does this help ANYONE?!

And why was i able to get nearly a year's worth without a contract?!

Concrete example of why "I won't touch Bluesky, because Jack Dorsey started it" is just stupid: rockets.

Hitler was an ass-hole. We have rockets, because of Hitler. Rockets have given us a ton of amazing scientific discoveries. Hitler has nothing to do with rockets anymore.

"Yes but Missiles" I hear some of you saying. 🤦‍♀️ We were shooting each other with missiles long before rockets. The problem is not the rockets. It's letting people attach explosives to them.

A few people responded to my post about where to sell the models for my Filament Stackers saying that Printables allowed you to sell individual models now. Turns out, yes they do but there are 2 problems.

  1. they don't mention it ANYWHERE and it's hidden under "Settings".
  2. this warning is FUCKING SCARY and almost drove me away, because the context was name & address.

After digging to find an example it turns out they only display name and country.

a screenshot of someone's seller information. It shows their display name, username, real name and country. I've obscured the real name and country parts.

#Scuttlebutt people (the decentralized social network). Help needed:

I currently "own" the "scuttlebutt" Handshake Domain. https://www.namebase.io/domains/scuttlebutt

Someone made me an offer for it but I don't know who. If this is someone actually responsible for Scuttlebutt I'll give it to them for free.

I'm not on Scuttlebutt anymore so if you could reach out to whoever's in charge these days and tell them I'd appreciate it. I tried when i used to be on, but no-one responded.

Wifey and i had a disagreement this morning related to the $99 apple developer fee and how much of developer related costs it could be expected to cover. I could be completely wrong, so I went to find out how many developers are actually paying for it.

Apple doesn't say. Not too surprising, but in digging for it i also discovered that apple never says how many developers actually have apps in the app store either. They don't even HINT at it.

I was thinking about the Ghost In The Shell live action movie with Scarlett Johansson. That made me think about whitewashing. So, I went and hunted down some east asian takes on the movie.

> When it comes to whitewashing movies what I ask myself is, 'Is the ethnicity of the character actually relevant to the story?'" - TheConfidentAsian

In this case the said the character is physically just a robot, but whitewashing Akira (very Japanese characters) or a historical tale would be a BadThing™

I've got 3 upcoming projects 🤞 (2 YouTube channel ideas & product photos) that need easy, reproduceable camera positioning, for multiple angles.

As a result, I'm embarking on the printing of this beast (~3kg filament) and it wants a 0.6mm nozzle so that you don't spend metaphorical years printing all the parts.

This made me think about hot end setup, and.... I don't like it.

I just spent about an hour in our basement looking for 3 items:

  • copper pipe
  • pipe bender
  • pipe flaring tools

Along the way I started discovering many things that we'd lost but needed, I'd forgotten the existence of, or that we'd forgotten the location of.

I started making a list because the collection of items is... absurd? ridiculous? & kinda interesting.

Why is it that when the typical ball point pen sold in USA runs out of ink I have to replace the entire thing: the body, the ink tube, the tip, the clicker, and the 2 springs?

Yet, when my pretty unremarkable Japanese ball-point pen runs out I just grab a replacement ink tube & tip?

When my lowbrow Lamy Safari fountain pen runs out I just replace the ink cartridge?

Why is pen stuff so needlessly wasteful?
