@GottaLaff yes, but historically the US has a long history of breaking treaties it doesn't like anymore. Just ask the Native Americans.

Not that this makes it ok, but... yeah. The only thing that actually matters seems to be what the rich white folk in charge want at the moment. If they want to break the treaty, the law saying they can't is irrelevant.

After deleting a couple hundred (i hope) entries I have 1,440 videos in my "Watch Later" queue on YouTube. Rabbit holes I was going down 10 years ago. there is no way to mass delete. There is no way to mass select. The fastest way is to use your phone and swipe + tap hundreds and hundreds of times.

it sucks so much.

Also, pretty much every person who uses YouTube has this problem. :/

I have finished constructing the Micro Jib!

The movement is SO smooth, and SO amazing. It's REALLY impressive to use.

The models are good, but equally important was the incredible job he did at making an easy to follow assembly guide.

Good make a HUGE difference

Some commentary in 🧵

I don't see many people talking about something that can do that I find invaluable, and that's making jigs.

I needed to cut some small steel rods to 4 different lengths, each with a 0.5mm tolerance.

So, I made a jig with for holes for measuring, and 1 for holding it steady while cutting. Stick the rod in, draw with sharpie where it stops, transfer it to the holding hole. Then slide it along the guide rail into the cutting blade at the correct height.

easy, precise, safer.

the jig in action. clamped to a workbench beside the Dremel with a diamond blade which is also clamped to the workbench.

I was trying to finish off a roll of filament that was sooooo close to empty. It worked, but as expected it ran out before the print was done. I heard the AMS sound change, looked over, and did an emergency swap with another roll of "whatever" and it didn't even notice 🎉

This is a pair of jigs for aligning (& soldering?) LED strips in a photo box so I don't care what it looks like.

I'm happy to report that I measured correctly :D

I've organized basement stuff. I've modeled a jig for cutting some rods. I ... am procrastinating going outside to do a very simple electrical task on the 🚑 furnace.

Mentour Pilot has finally released a video about the recent Alaska Airlines Door Plug blow-out.

As always, their videos are great and this is the first time I've felt I actually understood what happened, in anything more than a handwavey fashion.

He...

  • connects all the pieces leading up to it
  • explains the mechanical aspects
  • explains how the pilots reacted and why

If you are interested in actually understanding this event, I highly recommend it.

Lightbox assembled. Initial impressions

  1. I knew it was small, but… it's really small.
  2. It looks great considering the easy of creation.
  3. trivial to assemble and disassemble.
  4. packs up small & magnets are close enough to hold the stack
  5. I like the shadows cast by the overhead lights.
  6. Unsurprisingly it NEEDs lighting from the camera's side.

Nitpicks & future improvements in 🧵

three images. two on the left one tall one on the right. top left shows the lid with the LED strips wired up in series. bottom left shows a stack of 4 panels being lifted by the 2nd one down. the magnets are holding the rest up. the right image shows the meeting of 3 walls in the box without any obscuring items.

YouTube has been trying to convince me to watch videos from NerdForge for a while now. Last night, I actually watched one.

a) damn she's good. So skilled at so many things.
b) just went back and watched one of her / their first videos from 7 years ago. It was... not bad. A very reasonable video on building an Iron Throne phone charge.

It's impressive to see how she/they (her and her partner filming it) went from such an "average" starting point to 3.16M subscribers, & a huge studio.

I really wish apple allowed free trials in the app store instead of this inn-app purchase BS. There are a bunch of converter apps I'd try but i'm not going to spend $3 for 30 of them trying to find the one that does what I want.

where to sell a model?

My Filament Stackers are ready to go, but I've reached an impasse. Thangs.com wants me to set up ongoing plans that people subscribe to. MyMiniFactory wants me to pay like $25 a month.

Are there any 3D printing focused sites that would just let me sell a model for $6 and just take a cut of the sale with no monthly fees or buyer subscriptions?

Dear internet:

What are these?
I found them in our basement.

The thing on the right claims to be a "professional hole punch", but the end is designed to be very dull. I'm guessing this is related to PEX tubing because of where I found it, but why would that need punching?

I have absolutely no idea what the thing on the left is.

Jesus Christo, the "Invisibility Shield" company is now selling to the public. I can not think of a single non-skeezy reason anyone in the public needs this. This is basically guaranteed to result in privacy abuses and other 🐄💩.

Printables is having a contest for related models.

While I rarely sew, I got curious about what people had made. Check out this amazing "Bobbin Ferris" (wheel)!

I dunno how much you need to sew to justify having that many loaded bobbins on hand, but damn... Very cool.

[edit: answer is in responses] Can some geek explain to me why the video player for mastodon looks like such hot garbage?

Surely there are better looking open-source players available.

a) complete and UTTER waste of space putting speed controls on the left instead of below, or above.

b) doesn't account for large fonts (i presume) and wraps controls over two lines.

All of this would be fixed by just putting it on one line above or below the video.

ARRGH EFFING STOP THIS!!!!

This is TERRIBLE security. Even the people who came up with this idea DECADES ago have said that it was a terrible idea. This only makes things LESS secure.

Good security is simple:
UNLESS you are a security expert, assume that literally every security related idea you have is terrible. ONLY do what security experts (!= experienced devs) CURRENTLY advise. And do it without alteration.

https://xkcd.com/936/

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

click the XKCD comic link. ;)

short version: long and easy for humans to remember. The key factor to password security is the length. the value of everything else pales in comparison.

if it's hard to remember then people start doing stupid things like using the same password everywhere. "need a number" = they add 1 to whatever they always use. "use a special character" = they'll always add the same character to the end

complicated rules result in password reuse + minor predictable variation.

What's that you say? You want to delete your Glassdoor account because they are now forcing you to associate a real name / verified identity with their account which surely won't result in company retaliation for bad reviews ?

Well first, before you can access ANYTHING, fill out this quick survey about your current Job Status, with an auto opt-in to job notifications. 🤦‍♀️

Geeks: add "display: none" styling to the element in the screenshot to bypass this & make profile menu clickable

screenshot of the resulting page with it hidden.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

🖕 you Glassdoor. You can't even delete your account. You can only "Deactivate" it.

Pretty sure this violates some EU Laws. But I don't THINK I'm in a state with any protections about that. :/ And US Federal law doesn't give a shit about privacy.

Why is it that when the typical ball point pen sold in USA runs out of ink I have to replace the entire thing: the body, the ink tube, the tip, the clicker, and the 2 springs?

Yet, when my pretty unremarkable Japanese ball-point pen runs out I just grab a replacement ink tube & tip?

When my lowbrow Lamy Safari fountain pen runs out I just replace the ink cartridge?

Why is pen stuff so needlessly wasteful?

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

Yes, I said "lowbrow fountain pen". Trust me. It's ~$30 with $5 boxes of 5 replaceable plastic ink cartridges.

https://www.jetpens.com/search?q=LAMY+Safari+Fountain+Pen&v=2

It's incredibly easy to use, and produces a wonderful line. If you've been curious about fountain pens i highly recommend it. I use a medium "nib" (tip), and it produces a nice thick line equivalent to the more heavy flow consumer pens like the Uniball Vision.

Alas, I can't find my Safari right now. 😿
