Does anyone know of a menu-bar app that'll let me control the sound INPUT? For some reason apple's only lets me control the OUTPUT.

Yes, i could use one of @RogueAmoeba 's amazing products, but that's like hopping in a Lamborghini to go next-door. It works, but it's also a ridiculous amount of overkill.

I was thinking about the Ghost In The Shell live action movie with Scarlett Johansson. That made me think about whitewashing. So, I went and hunted down some east asian takes on the movie.

> When it comes to whitewashing movies what I ask myself is, 'Is the ethnicity of the character actually relevant to the story?'" - TheConfidentAsian

In this case the said the character is physically just a robot, but whitewashing Akira (very Japanese characters) or a historical tale would be a BadThing™

#Rust geeks who use #Ruby & #MacOS I can't get rs-sys to compile. This is affecting my job and I could really use help. Ticket here: https://github.com/oxidize-rb/rb-sys/issues/207

even if the help is just "works for me" or "broke for me" I'd love to hear it.

no-one: whatcha doing?
me: oh, you-know, just comparing generic drugs my insurance company is forcing me to choose between instead of the non-generic drug my dr prescribed. they're not the same thing at all, but they're approved for too and much cheaper, and saving the insurance company money is what's really important here.

Tangentially related:
I'm now down a rabbit hole of WTFery and finding many packages that no longer build that used to build on my machine. Including, but not limited to, a crate that I maintain. It has a dependency on something that has a dependency on Tendril and that doesn't compile anymore. :(

questions, re. all the federated clones:

  1. do any of them support subreddits or is the idea that the instance itself is equivalent to a single subreddit?

  2. In either case, how does federation work with regards to "subreddits" ? How do i post something to a /r/MyInterest equivalent and have it show up only in the /r/MyInterest .... equivalents out there (be they subreddits or individual instances)

Explanation or pointers to explanation posts would be greatly appreciated.

another day, another issue

Link colors provide contextual value. They tell you that this text is different from that text, and that it's probably interactive.

If you get rid of that, it's impossible to tell something is a link. Yes, you can underline it, but underlining text is something we've been doing for hundreds of years as a form of emphasis.

Removing that not only makes it harder to know what I can do with your page, BUT it also breaks accessibility tools.

There's a #Vim thing on the front page of Hacker News today. Someone asked

> Can you actually explain how [common editors are] suboptimal UX, and what I could be doing better. I want a simple IDE, not suboptimal bloat. I don't need 200 keybinds to make a vue component.
>
> Just because you have a bunch of custom quirks doesn't mean that I do.

and it's a TOTALLY valid and understandable response...

people. Half of my notification sounds seem to be coming out of my laptop speakers instead of the output sound is configured to use.

I'm on the latest Ventura. I think there used to be a preferences thing that let you redirect notification sounds but i don't see it in the new "system settings" thing.

Help? This is so annoying.

there um.... there MIGHT be a bug in the the new graph that compares how many PRs you've reviewed as compared to your team mates. 😉

I'm pretty sure folks aren't actually reviewing ~400 PRs per week seeing as we only make a few PRs each.

This graph exists because folks have trouble remembering to spend time reviewing other people's PRs. It'll help you see if you're doing "enough" relative to the team. Or if maybe the only reason anything gets reviewed is because of you.

many of you have seen the image of cuts of salmon meat swimming up some rapids. I'm not sure where that came from, but i was curious as to what midjourney would make of the same prompt these days.

Here are 5 images, each generated with the same "salmon in the river" prompt. one for each version of midjourney.

(You can specify what version to render with in the prompt)

Wifey and i had a disagreement this morning related to the $99 apple developer fee and how much of developer related costs it could be expected to cover. I could be completely wrong, so I went to find out how many developers are actually paying for it.

Apple doesn't say. Not too surprising, but in digging for it i also discovered that apple never says how many developers actually have apps in the app store either. They don't even HINT at it.

🤔 I wonder how long before someone manages to incorporate multi-color embroidery without manual thread switching.

Heatset insert advice‡

  1. get a press. your hands aren't THAT steady and you can't see from 2 sides of the print at once.
  2. cheap & fast option: https://www.amazon.com/FNATR-81-Pressing-Threaded-Printing/dp/B0BJ6DT2PC/
  3. better (same cost w/out vice, but get the vice) https://learn.adafruit.com/heat-set-rig/ requires trivial amount of 3d printing and assembly
  4. need to do this HUNDREDS of times for making $? https://cybernightmarket.com/products/heat-set-insert-press

I slept poorly, the dog woke me up to go out at 3AM, again at ~6AM, and then decided he couldn't wait the 20 minutes until 7:20 to get out of the bed, not that i'd actually been able to get back to sleep after 6 anyway. Siri repeatedly thwarted me, and people are being stupid on the internet.

Yesterday @b0rk was polling folks about their feelings on various version control systems.

In 2007 I was working at Akamai. They used Perforce. It was a fucking nightmare.

I was SO upset I wrote a blog post entitled Dear Perforce: fuck you.
https://weblog.masukomi.org/2007/08/31/dear-perforce-fuck-you/

This is notable because of the MANY THOUSANDS of views it got, FOR YEARS & how many pissed off commenters it had.

Last night I came across this surprisingly good video about the Zildjian cymbal company. https://youtu.be/DdYULBK8vGQ

They've been the king of cymbals all my life. What i didn't realize was that they've been around for > 400 years now! Or that they were created by an Armenian who's family emigrated and set up shop in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Whilst writing that last thread my absolutely shat the bed. Just 100% stopped working. Well, as far as the computer was concerned. As far as the Glove80 is concerned all is hunky-dory 👍

Alas, you need both.

Our orange 1st Aid bag is huge, BUT I so prefer it to our more compact ones, because it gives me the ability to clearly label everything.

🧠s are TERRIBLE at decision making (& finding things) in high stress situations. Constant training on where things are can overcome this, BUT unless you're an EMT that's not gonna happen. So, Find ways to compensate.

A while ago I mentioned hunting for a good looking photo box for product photos and finally finding the one pictured below

Well, it turns out it's a complete rip-off of this product: https://amzn.to/3TRTcH5

The creator appears to have just copied the original (scanned?) and made a box with 3 of them. UGH!

I'm fine with "inspired by", but this is just theft.

After deleting a couple hundred (i hope) entries I have 1,440 videos in my "Watch Later" queue on YouTube. Rabbit holes I was going down 10 years ago. there is no way to mass delete. There is no way to mass select. The fastest way is to use your phone and swipe + tap hundreds and hundreds of times.

it sucks so much.

Also, pretty much every person who uses YouTube has this problem. :/

Well, I think I have found out why the sizing chart suggested that I - a 35DD - should order a 40A.

Technically, this elastic can stretch to the 36 inch circumference that it claims. However, that is 8.5” (21.5cm) beyond its starting point!

What the actual fuck⁉️ Why would you do this to a person? This thing is SO tight! If I gained even a hint of weight and tried to wear this for a day, I’d have to go to the ER.

I will never buy this brand (Auden) again.
