US people & new cooks:

Brown rice uses different water ratios than White rice. It also expands to a larger volume.

Brown rice: 2 gō = ~ 1.5 cups = ~260g
Water: ~600g

2 gō of brown rice will expand to the size of 3 gō of white. Brown doesn't require rinsing first. It's better for you, and it has more flavor.

1gō (~3/4 cup) of white rice is a decent amount for 1 person for consume in a rice-heavy meal. IMNSHO it's a bit too much with brown.

Waiting for the cat to fall asleep for her x-rays this morning. This office doesn’t have a dim mode so it’s pretty dark with only the light filtering through the small windows in the doors.

We are trying to answer the question of why she limps so hard on her right leg and why she sits holding it like this.

A photo of the cat sitting up and holding her right paw off the ground. She looks skinnier than normal because she is wearing her harness. However, she has so much floof that you can’t actually see it.

Current status: waiting for drugs to take hold before X-rays.

It’s scary. Usually this moment is followed by my never seeing them again.

folks in the US: Make sure you have a valid passport before November. If the Cheeto gets elected we are massively fucked.

TIL I can renew my passport by mail, AND submit new photos that I take at home. Thus... Not Crappy photo! Also, I could switch to the X Gender Marker.

I have finished constructing the Micro Jib!

The movement is SO smooth, and SO amazing. It's REALLY impressive to use.

The models are good, but equally important was the incredible job he did at making an easy to follow assembly guide.

Good make a HUGE difference

Well water in our area is polluted by a Teflon company that didn't give a 💩 about humans, only 💰. So we get bottled water from WB Mason.

Our delivery driver is wicked friendly, & a joy to interact with, but when we met him I was in Boy Mode. Now, it's getting warm out, so I'm going to have to out myself (ugh).

Also, he always says "hey buddy!" when he greets me and I realized, I can't think of a female or neutral equivalent for that. 🤔

people: What's a good paper stock to use for a softcover binding? For me cheap and easy to acquire is more important than good looks.

I just want to make printed versions of long PDFs (or collections of) so that I don't have to read them on a screen.

@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

I may have fallen down a minor rabbit hole in which i discovered that "thermal binding machines" are a thing. They're ~$100-200 in the US BUT the exact same machines are available on Ali Express for $55 with (checks notes) $2 shipping (from china).

Also, hot-melt glue strips for use in these machines? $5 for100 vs ~$10 for 20 on US Amazon.

The one in the pic here is rebranded as the "We R Memory - Thermal Cinch" in the US and for $80-$100. 🤦‍♀️

I'm seriously starting to think I need a second 3D Printer. I keep telling myself "you're just working through a backlog. The queue will dry up soon enough"

But, it's not drying up. I keep adding more things to it, and I want to be able to use a 0.6 and a 0.4 nozzle without having to disassemble & reassemble things.

I'm currently printing filament shelf number 9, and today's queue has the lazy susan, and the next version of the CPAP adapter for wifey.

I was trying to finish off a roll of filament that was sooooo close to empty. It worked, but as expected it ran out before the print was done. I heard the AMS sound change, looked over, and did an emergency swap with another roll of "whatever" and it didn't even notice 🎉

This is a pair of jigs for aligning (& soldering?) LED strips in a photo box so I don't care what it looks like.

I'm happy to report that I measured correctly :D

With all the hubris of a white person, did i set forth to perform violence unto bush. Before i had even finished attacking the first, the gods made their displeasure known. They called forth a non-torrential rain to drive me away!

I fled with the evidence of my crimes to the nearest "dump" and didst dispose of it properly.

Into "High Gear" I put mine tractor, and fled to the welcome embrace of a dry garage.

& in the US: Where the hell do you find metric sized magnets? All the magnet sites seem to be imperial only… except for "mounting magnets" ?!?!

I found 1 - ONE ❗- Company that actually has a "metric magnets" section: https://www.apexmagnets.com/magnets/metric-sizes

Feel like walking up and slapping 👏 whatever political ass-holes have been preventing us from switching to the metric system. 📏

I don't see many people talking about something that can do that I find invaluable, and that's making jigs.

I needed to cut some small steel rods to 4 different lengths, each with a 0.5mm tolerance.

So, I made a jig with for holes for measuring, and 1 for holding it steady while cutting. Stick the rod in, draw with sharpie where it stops, transfer it to the holding hole. Then slide it along the guide rail into the cutting blade at the correct height.

easy, precise, safer.

the jig in action. clamped to a workbench beside the Dremel with a diamond blade which is also clamped to the workbench.

I don't know who's in charge of UI stuff on the mastodon core team but they REALLY need to step back and re-evaluate what they have because holy shit is this nonsensical.

Want to see teh hashtags you follow? Oh, expand your window enough to make the new post appear, click the hamburger menu to access BUTTLOADS of things that have NOTHING to do with a new post.

Follow Requests and Followed Hashtags are in a section with 3 items that ALL appear in the left nav, but not those 2. WHY?!

Good news: the 🚑ambulance’s rear left brake caliper does not need to be replaced, and we don’t need new shocks.

Bad news: both of the front brake calipers need replacing, a bunch of brake lines need to be replaced.

And a fan shroud that costs like $600 needs replacing.

The tank has a small leak on its top, but the OEM tank is steel and cost about $5000. We will be able to save significant money if we buy a plastic aftermarket one and have them install it.

Decisions were made, and I am reasonably confident they were not good. In the time it took me to figure out this janky-ass solution I could have just re-printed the jig at a different height.

This whole set up is so sketch that I think I will do that anyways. Better safe than emergency room.

The problem is that the rods I am cutting need to be positioned very precisely such that they encounter the spinning Dremel blade, but do not encounter the body of the Dremel

TIL that the word for "bra" is "mamzono" which is the word for breast (mamo) plus the word for belt or girdle (zono). Thus, "breast girdle". However, "belt" is the much more commonly known translation for "zono", because essentially no-one wears girdles or talks about them anymore.

So, the translation folks will likely come to first, and the one i find far more entertaining, is "breast belt".

:D

[edit: answer is in responses] Can some geek explain to me why the video player for mastodon looks like such hot garbage?

Surely there are better looking open-source players available.

a) complete and UTTER waste of space putting speed controls on the left instead of below, or above.

b) doesn't account for large fonts (i presume) and wraps controls over two lines.

All of this would be fixed by just putting it on one line above or below the video.

I have to go to the periodontist in the morning. Unfortunately there’s a threshold between barely Bs and perky DDs where you can no longer expect the dental technician who’s leaning over your reclined body to buy the idea that you just have “man boobs”. Especially when combined with is hair.

I really hate having to out myself as to people i only have a business relationship with.

The other day when I was under the #ambulance 🚑 I was pondering how rusty some of the stuff is getting. After the brakes locked up @dachary commented about how she hoped this didn't end up like the vanagon, just an expensive untrustworthy thing you keep having to throw money at.

Out of curiousity i called a dealer that sells our brand and asked how much they charge to "remount" the big box with all the ambulance stuff onto a new chassis...

Exploring if there's a "do it yourself" way to get a brake caliper to release. Turns out, yes, yes there is. However, it requires removing the wheel.

Normally, sure fine. However, our 🚑 weighs 12,000lb (~5,400 kg) AND our garage isn't tall enough to let it in, so we don't have a concrete floor or paved surface to put a jack on. I don't want that to squish me. Also, "duallies" (dual rear tires) are a massive pain in the ass.

So, I'll drive it 0.4 miles with a stuck brake to get it fixed. 🤦‍♀️
