@Theblueone I really like that. But I’m a fan of this kind of Cadillac metallic green even before we get into the shape and the pickups!

@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

I wonder if I tag both and or , if we could get enough people local to Milwaukee together here on the fediverse to arrange a group ride?

I haven’t used Facebook in years and some people used Reddit or Discords in the past, but I’m trying to avoid those completely too. So, who wants to ride?

@joe once this weather cools off, let’s plan something!

(This is a venting post, please don't tell me to "just learn it" because, I will... when I find some free time.)

I was set to switch from GitHub to Codeberg, but realized there is no graphical client.

I'm a hobbyist, not a full-time software dev, and yes, I use the command line every day, but 95% of my use of GitHub has been using the GUI.

I was hoping for a quick & easy transition, but I'll need to set aside some time to read up on the CLI stuff now before I can start getting things there.

@rasterweb Git Tower is pretty good from what I remember. Should work fine. https://www.git-tower.com/mac

I dont think any of the communication protocols are looking nearly far enough into the future.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@liaizon it’s not described very deeply, but the Walkaways network with its adaptive protocols/frequencies and “polite” spectrum usage, as well as being decentralized and resilient, seemed like a good start for a physical layer. Such things could be built on something like LoRa I suppose, but there’s not a lot of bandwidth there. And you quickly get into “how far should I propagate this message?” decisions for such networks.

@liaizon I should go through and pull quotes on the network described in the book

Air quality is bad from wildfire smoke again. My allergies are out of control. Achoo!

mathiasx,

@rasterweb me too, mostly. Sorry to hear you got sick. Hope you have a swift recovery and are back to finding old sidewalks soon!

Are you familiar with the laundry chute?

@rasterweb a good place to run ethernet cables to the basement from upstairs.

I tried to go for a walk this morning and made it half a block before I went back and got my respirator. I then did two miles before I called it quits. This air is terrible. You could see a haze from the early morning sunlight.

@rasterweb I was out on a bike this morning and thinking it was getting better! Here’s hoping.

@rasterweb without a mask or anything. Granted this was around 8am; it may have been worse earlier in the morning.

Why is pace displayed like 4'20" instead of 4:20? Isn't it a measure of time per distance?

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb it helps to distinguish minutes-seconds from hours-minutes records, I imagine.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb that’s fair too.

The abject failure of my phone to reliably maintain a calendar, contact list and remind me to do stuff has me back on my “build yourself a PDA” shit.

@vertigo @kelbot @requiem @woozong @jens @gl33p or a Blackberry style trackball for navigating quickly? Although I do like the idea of D-pad or small joystick.

Recalling a time that I really weirded out my neighbors in an apartment complex, back in 2007 or so. I think I started making LED throwies before attending a BarCamp, so that I could teach others.

mathiasx,

@Theblueone I’m a big fan, if for no other reason that I can listen on really nice headphones and practice anytime (and anywhere — it’s even more portable than a mini pedal board.)

Speccing out a new road/gravel bike build. Bike parts have gotten really expensive since the pandemic! And LBS has some supply chain issues still so I’ll be ordering a few things myself. Will be neat to have a new, light bike though. (And still have a steel frame!)

I wonder how reliable WiFi connections are on the Raspberry Pi Pico W. Could I set two up to talk to each other and it'll just work, even after I ship it to someone across the country? How reliable is it? Will they always see each other properly?

I haven't done much with WiFi stuff on microcontrollers, and... I know it should just work, but the real world is a harsh environment.

mathiasx,

@rasterweb seems like a watchdog script might be useful with a relatively long timeout before it tries to restart its end.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb it’s been many years but as a cautionary tale; we moved from Rpi’s (probsbly Rpi 2’s with wifi USB dongles, though?) to Xbee radios for a hardware project that needed to do something similar.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb nowadays, I’d use Esp32 modules with LoRa radios, and you could use Arduino IDE and Esp32 libraries for this, but the LoRa stuff from scratch might be a lot of work.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb aha! Sorry. I understand now.
