China's targets to drastically reduce its reliance on overseas buying in line with its push for food security will be exceedingly difficult to meet, experts say. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/05/23/asia-pacific/politics/china-food-security-land-soil-water/ #asiapacific #politics #china #climatechange #foodsecurity

@thejapantimes they should invade and erase ruSSia. It's the only invasion that would be acceptable and they could grow enough food.

"Almost 80% of the respondents, all from the authoritative , foresee at least 2.5C of global heating, while almost half anticipate at least 3C (5.4F). Only 6% thought the internationally agreed 1.5C (2.7F) limit would be met.

Many of the scientists envisage a “semi-dystopian” future, with famines, conflicts and mass migration, driven by heatwaves, wildfires, floods and storms of an intensity and frequency far beyond those that have already struck."

@CelloMomOnCars It's really cowardly to blame others for our responsibilities. Who chose these politicians? Who travels by plane for pleasure? Who buys multiple cars? Who prefers buying plastic things to pay less? Etc.

We are the only ones responsible for what is happening! Politicians only do what they are asked to do. And we collectively ask them not to change our societies! We demand that they do not do what is necessary to maintain the habitability of the Earth. It's our collective choice!

mathieu_caron,
@mathieu_caron@mastodon.social avatar

@CelloMomOnCars This idea comforts us by imagining that the population is not the problem, but the few exceptions cannot make our collective responsibility disappear. We all know that some people are nice, but our way of life is still a failure.

@CelloMomOnCars The problem is that the majority prefers to avoid any confrontation and agrees to submit. If the average person was like you, the world would be a much better place!

The Fully Charged/Everything Electric team really is one big family, and I love these photos. The London show was our 14th (inc all international shows) and every one is so exciting - so many new ideas/techs for cleaner energy and transport, and they’re already the present, not just the future. Onwards and upwards!

mathieu_caron,
@mathieu_caron@mastodon.social avatar

@helenczerski what about most of the world?! We will use all the resources so we can have individual cars? This is 100% criminal.

Academic Hive Mind ! Do you have ressource on the energetical cost of open data policies?

A colleague of mine pointed out yesterday the energetical cost of publishing data alongside articles. Storing this (huge amount of) data on servers will require building new ones, powering them, etc.
I am aware of the positive side of it, but we must think of the effect of how we do science on the climate.

mathieu_caron,

@CCochard @academicchatter Nobody seems to talk about it, but if you remove the analysis tools from Google/Facebook/etc., it will help avoid saving a lot of data on their servers. Very simple, very effective.

This paper says we underestimate how much other people want climate action

"Our findings reveal widespread support for . Notably, 69% of the global population expresses a willingness to contribute 1% of their personal income, 86% endorse pro-climate social norms and 89% demand intensified political action.

[But] individuals around the globe systematically underestimate the willingness of their fellow citizens to act."

@CelloMomOnCars The only important question is do they support mandatory changes or only those that do not change their lifestyle and are therefore totally ineffective in reality?!

mathieu_caron,
@mathieu_caron@mastodon.social avatar

@CelloMomOnCars we need to change the way we imagine ourselves in the world. Instead of wanting to improve our way of life, we should consider that the lives of others elsewhere are also important. We cannot imagine that an individual electric car is a good idea. The necessary changes would reduce our quality of life in the West because we would no longer be able to exploit others as much. We must consider ourselves as important as others even if it means losing privileges.

Literally no mainstream science organization supports the position "we're doomed so just give up" and yet somehow that's a common belief

How did we wind up here? This seems like a catastrophically bad messaging failure

https://futurism.com/the-byte/humanity-is-doomed-poll

mathieu_caron,
@mathieu_caron@mastodon.social avatar

@jenbanim it's simple to understand. We know what we have to do since at least 1972. We (societies) never tried to do it once. Instead of doing what's needed, we accelerate in the wrong direction.

A systemic problem cannot be solved if the problematic system is kept.

It's simple. The laws of physics won't change.

We know we will continue to try to keep this system. We don't try to avoid extinction, we try to maintain our system, we do everything we can to make sure we won't have a chance.

mathieu_caron,
@mathieu_caron@mastodon.social avatar

@jenbanim you don't see the problem is not the climate? Climate change is only one effect. The problem is systemic.

It's not a choice, it's the only reality.

We can avoid extinction if our system is destroyed by a catastrophic event for example.

mathieu_caron,
@mathieu_caron@mastodon.social avatar

@jenbanim it's not illegal to believe it will be fine if we don't solve our problem, but it's definitely helpful for those who work to keep profiting from it.

mathieu_caron,
@mathieu_caron@mastodon.social avatar

@jenbanim and "We are not going to be doomed because of climate change. No mainstream scientific organization promotes this."

Wow! You should trust the IPCC and all the other scientists. When they say a huge part of the world will have many deadly days each year, you understand what's meaning??? Or you don't care because you live far from there?
