Have been trying Mojeek for a few days, ever since the Bing #Searchapocalypse. Sadly, on balance I find myself making two searches per search now: one to search Mojeek and the other using another Provider to get the result I actually need.
It's a plucky little engine that does get basic searches right but it's currently not where I'm used to with the bigger engines.
Now going to give Searx another go. My chosen instance is [http://priv.au]. In testing of the Instances available this is the first one I found that scores very high for accuracy, and it's near the top of the table in all the metrics.
Searx is an aggregator leaning heavily on Google and Bing but protecting you from the worst of the identity data-slurp-age. That said, putting the same searches in there as I've been trialling in Mojeek is, so far, nailing what I'm looking for. The images below are a good example of what I'm getting.
Search Term: UK General Election
Intent: find information about current affairs.
Searx: a page of very recent articles from the last week discussing the 2024 GE and news associated with it.
Mojeek: Articles going back a decade or more talking in general terms about a General Election and giving results from previous ones. A trio of more recent "News" items are shown in a side-bar at the bottom of the page. Switching to the News tab shows me more of what I'm searching for but it's still not as good as Searx, and involves that extra click.
Searx (Google/Bing) seem to understand current search context far better than Mojeek does.
As much as I'd like to break free of the Search Duo-poly getting accurate results in a timely manner is my priority right now.
@Uraael I might give SearXNG a try again, I stop after having to jump to various instances that doesn't perform very well. We do need more search engine which doesn't just get result from Bing or Google through
Been told that dual-booting both Linux and Windows might be for me. I was unsure about it at first but after watching ExpainingComputer's YouTube video about it, I think I may do the dual-drive methods.
I'm only going to have Windows just for if for whatever reason what I wanna do on Linux isn't working out and I can just get it done. Otherwise, Linux should be my main OS whenever I get a new PC and Windows would be secondary.
The major one for me is I want to self-learn to do video-editing and I know Resolve is suppose to be good but setting it up as well as running it on Linux is a mess and depending how annoying it is for me, I might just stick to Windows for videoediting but general stuff otherwise would be Linux.
I wish I don't had to relie on Windows (This isn't an cue for advice, I just want to vent). After lot of dogery moves by Microsoft as well as user experience feels messy on Windows 10 (not the worst but still not that great), wish I can ditch it.
Hopefully once I dabble some more of FOSS project and learn how to use them, I may not be as dependent on Windows but it depends on if it would work for me and I feel like I am getting benefit from the switch. It's the way some Linux user talk about Linux like it works flawlessly for them and that people who use Windows are idiots and their very super tech-savvy, knows how to code and I can't.
Is it silly that I feel like I'm not really a Linux user if I don't have coding skills and just want to use less of Windows and that's it?
What the heck has happened to Search this morning? Both Startpage and Ecosia faling to return any results for simple phrases. Startpage can't "find any results" for fellow Search engine, Qwant? And neither engine could find any results for "daemon"???
Not linking directly because I don't want to shit on projects I believe are genuinely trying to make the web better, but every time I see a post about "the small web" or a more "humane" web or whatever that includes phrases like this about content: "created without the motivation of financial gain" I sigh so deeply lol
I am begging ethical web enthusiasts to understand what an extreme privilege it is to spend time working on something without worrying about money
@sue It's gives off the same energy as FediBros getting bitchy when an small artist/indie-dev are promoting their game. I get disliking ads that track everybody and some the ads in question are scams but to get annoyed at someone sharing their work hoping that someone would buy it so they can make money to live is crazy.
Joe Biden could still turn this around and not lose to Trump by defunding Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people. If he doesn’t, there will be only person to blame for Joe Biden losing to Trump in six months and that’s Joe “I am a Zionist” Biden.
Seriously heard someone saying they don't listen to many black artists, because they aren't really into rap. Bitch please, feel free to share songs from Black artists from any genre. Here is one of my favorites, if you like this song please check out her other work:
Ngl, I miss the werid reaction clips in the reply and the few of them do caught me off gaude. It's just funny seeing OP being so smug and get roasted in the reply of something that has no nuance to reason them and is ether an flatout terrible take or is really bigoted.
I'm not saying "bring back bullying to the Fediverse" but sometime it feels little too serious and people have the "I'm so smart, you're not" smugness and trying to be civil isn't going make difference with those gits. Some people are just arrogant, they don't care to listen on your side and sometime just making fun of their smugness is funny.
@RickiTarr You saying it like it still doesn't happen today, I swear some the pop music just lazily relie on rappers to make an verse to just get their song to chart
