Today in we have the release Tin Jubilee of an elephantine EP to celebrate:

[10: Tin] Autechre's "L—event" EP: https://autechre.warp.net/release/249378-autechre-l-event

Couple of things I've only just realised about this one:

  1. I hear echoes of 'Gantz Graf' in the opening track 'tac Lacora'.
  2. With L being 50 in Roman numerals, the Golden Jubilee in 2063 will be the big one.

Also, I did some mashups of the cover with an old avatar on release day (still got the files, dated).

Happy Anniversary, @sean_ae & Rob! <æ

Cinera Database Performance

It's been a while since I've had to get creative with speeding things up in Cinera, but the addition of timestamps to the mix has brought performance to the fore, and I figured it'd be handy to document it.

Here's the amount of data we're dealing with:

Projects: 27
├ Strings: 5865 (5.7 KiB)
└ Entries: 821
├ Strings: 35353 (34.5 KiB)
└ Timestamps: 43860
└ Strings: 2893145 (2.8 MiB)

And our two broad operations:

  1. Fresh build
  2. Resync existing build

Today in we're on Autechre day with the release anniversary of the third album to celebrate:

[28] Autechre's "Tri Repetae": https://autechre.warp.net/format/594952-tri-repetae

I dunno, guys, it was 1995, the year Wipeout also arrived on PlayStation (I never had it, just a demo of the later 2097 on my Demo One). And, though the closest Autechre and Psygnosis got (AFAIK?) was via tDR's artwork, Tri Rep and Wipeout are the two pieces that call each other to mind the most for me.

Happy Anniversary, @sean_ae & Rob! <æ

I'm a fool. Of our public service broadcasters, Channel 4 was the one I imagined being the first to federate. Not sure why: maybe I get a more of an indie adventurous vibe from them?

But nope, the BBC is the first to join us with their experimental presence: https://social.bbc/@BBCRD/110808429680242963

Let's welcome @BBCRD and friends, and give them (and those of us in the Fediverse who value well-functioning publicly owned institutions) many reasons to transition this experiment into an established fixture.

Today in we have the release anniversaries of a duo of lethargic albums to celebrate:

[29] Portishead's "Dummy": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dummy_(album)
[17] Pajo's "1968": https://www.dragcity.com/products/pajo-1968

If you crave the sound of hazy, degraded audio, or beautiful incidental melodies, today's your lucky day.

Happy Anniversary, Beth, Geoff & Adrian (incl. Clive), and David!

Today in we have the release anniversaries (one a Wood Jubilee) of a duo of duos' albums to celebrate:

[14] Autechre's "Oversteps": https://autechre.warp.net/release/249266-autechre-oversteps
[5: Wood] Sleaford Mods' "Eton Alive": https://cargorecordsdirect.co.uk/collections/extreme-eating/products/sleaford-mods-eton-alive

Primeval is the quality I hear running through these two. In Oversteps' string-like sounds – guitar, harp, dulcimer – as if modelled after echoes found in ancient archaeology, and Eton Alive's howls about society.

Happy Anniversary, @sean_ae & Rob; and Jason & Andrew!

Today in we have one silver jubilee and one regular album release anniversary to celebrate:

[25: Silver] Autechre's "LP5": https://autechre.warp.net/release/249326-autechre-lp5
[14] Clark's "Totems Flare": https://throttleclark.com/album/totems-flare/

Bit of personal trivia: Clark here was a complete chance-discovery. We'd gone down to London to see Tortoise play at the Koko Club. Clark supported playing stuff off "Body Riddle", through that sound system, did what it said on the tin.

Happy Anniversary, @sean_ae & Rob, and Chris!

Social web feature dream: The ability to relate (sets of) posts together to say "these posts are referring to the same thing".

I'd use this for these posts and their replies:

https://mas.to/@miblo/111380067627144896 by me
https://social.kernel.org/notice/Abq7z1gh5dhvxJdBUu by @monsieuricon

Sure, we have hashtags, but they rather work to put the posts into a pool of others also bearing that hashtag. I'm thinking of drawing a line between specified posts to say they're related.

Does already have this, I wonder? cc: @evan

Today in we have the release anniversary of surely one of the all-time top 10 EPs about nomadic living to celebrate:

Well, today in we have the release Pearl Jubilee of the (¿compilation?) album that began it all to celebrate:

[30: Pearl] Autechre's "Incunabula": https://autechre.warp.net/release/202833-autechre-incunabula

It is the end of the day that "Incunabula" evokes for me. Autumn nights, wrapped up wandering the fleetingly lit streets, lost in thought putting the pieces of our days together.

Happy Pearl Jubilee and thank you for the music, @sean_ae & Rob! <æ

Today in we have the release anniversary of the first Autechre release of the year to celebrate:

[27] Autechre's "Envane" EP: https://autechre.warp.net/release/249373-autechre-envane

Ingredients:
• ¼ disc of goz, scratched
• ¼ disc of latent, recalled from memory
• ¼ disc of laughing, roughly chopped
• ¼ disc of draun, sawn and peeled to reveal the soft, dreamy interior

Method:
Layer everything up on a platter and spin.

Happy Anniversary, @sean_ae & Rob! <æ

Alt Text Question:

Take a still from a film. It features a bunch of particulars: actor, playing a part, on a set (or on location, in a place).

Sighted people can see these particulars, and so have a chance to read our still image in the context of other things involving them. They don't just see "woman riding carriage".

So the question: If we're already on board with doing alt text at all, and know the particulars, isn't it more helpful to use them than generic descriptors?

on Black Friday, for https://mas.to/@eleanorrees/111466072492922314 by @eleanorrees

What's your approach to Black Friday sales? Do you buy things in them? Do you share posts against Black Friday as an evil capitalist con?

I guess if you happen to buy a thing in the sale that you had to buy anyway, your best judgement may decide between do or don't buy.

Today in we have the release anniversaries of a duo of sun-kissed albums to celebrate:

[29] Autechre's "Amber": https://autechre.warp.net/release/202836-autechre-amber
[18] Kate Bush's "Aerial": https://www.katebush.com/aerial/

I love these days (17th Feb is the other) when we celebrate both Autechre and Kate. For me, this one is a passing of the electronic baton. Kate's (current) final – before the jazzier 50WfS – and Autechre's first conceived as an album focused on electronics.

Happy Anniversary, @sean_ae & Rob; and Kate!

Hiya @ixi, cheers for following and boosting my post about ListenBrainz. Hope you don't mind me taking the liberty of checking out your stats: https://listenbrainz.org/user/IXIX/stats/?range=all_time

Not sure we have much overlap there, but I do recognise some of your top artists (Interpol, Bloc Party, Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo) and wonder if you'd be into Warpaint: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1SV1NqSZGQ

Today in we have the release anniversary of one of the all-time great videogame soundtracks to celebrate:

[31] 古代祐三 (Yuzo Koshiro's) "BARE NUCKLE II" OST: https://vgmdb.net/album/357

Known to my Sega-owning friends here in the West as "Streets of Rage 2", I discovered this hard-core techno inspired OST myself later in life. At times dreamy, funky, unsettling, this one takes its parent game and console by the hand and leads them along the paths of history.

Happy Anniversary, Koshiro-san!

Today in we have the release anniversary of a stratospheric album to celebrate:

[16] Autechre's "Quaristice": https://autechre.warp.net/release/249272-autechre-quaristice

Flying in the slipstream of 1997's four-quartered Envane, Quaristice was the first Autechre release I caught as it happened. Pretty sure it was in the buildup that Mary Anne Hobbs whetted my appetite by playing 'Simmm' on the radio. And I once toyed with 'chenc9' in Pure Data for an unstaged show of The Wizard of Oz!

Happy Anniversary, @sean_ae & Rob! <æ
