Here are the top data services I'd love to see come to the fediverse next year:

@miblo@mas.to avatar

@luca @evan @mattl Yeah, there's ListenBrainz, which I recently discovered and switched to: https://listenbrainz.org/user/M.%20del%20Carpio/

Importing my historic scrobbles was a doddle, likewise switching to listenbrainz-mpd and, as a big fan of MusicBrainz, its connection with MBz just makes it a perfect fit for me.

I'm trying to convince the last friends I have left on Facebook, X, Threads, or BlueSky to join the Fediverse. Some have tried but felt a sense of loneliness. Nowadays, many people are so used to doing what algorithms suggest that they can no longer make independent choices.
My timeline here, on the other hand, is beautiful.
I see what I want, I follow people who post what I like, and no one tells me what I should do. Freedom may come with a "cost," but whatever it is, it's worth the effort. Always.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@Funktious @me Yeah, I wonder if it's similar here to how things were on a small-ish community blogging site I was on years ago (blog.co.uk).

No "algorithm". We'd basically form our own little circle of friends by writing articles, finding other people's blogs in the directory, commenting on each other's articles, joining groups.

Maybe the people who didn't get Mastodon never really had that kind of experience?

on Black Friday, for https://mas.to/@eleanorrees/111466072492922314 by @eleanorrees

What's your approach to Black Friday sales? Do you buy things in them? Do you share posts against Black Friday as an evil capitalist con?

I guess if you happen to buy a thing in the sale that you had to buy anyway, your best judgement may decide between do or don't buy.

Here's a video of a little LED Clock program I've been having a go at making over the last two weekends: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTqyY7Xp8dg

There's stuff to improve, but the big revelation for me: I could write text in there without having to learn how to render fonts myself! This may bring other potential projects a lot closer to happening.

Cheers to @revk for the inspiration!

Loving !

Yesterday, 12th November 2023, I began tracking my music listening on ListenBrainz: https://listenbrainz.org/user/M.%20del%20Carpio/stats/?range=all_time

I'd been doing the same on last.fm since 8th November 2006: https://www.last.fm/user/Miblo

In all those years on last.fm I had no idea where it got its information, or if I could add / edit any.

ListenBrainz, though, is related to , which I've been on since 2009. And, seeing that some recent listens lacked data, I could add it.

Joined-up thinking in action!

Social web feature dream: The ability to relate (sets of) posts together to say "these posts are referring to the same thing".

I'd use this for these posts and their replies:

https://mas.to/@miblo/111380067627144896 by me
https://social.kernel.org/notice/Abq7z1gh5dhvxJdBUu by @monsieuricon

Sure, we have hashtags, but they rather work to put the posts into a pool of others also bearing that hashtag. I'm thinking of drawing a line between specified posts to say they're related.

Does already have this, I wonder? cc: @evan

Today in we have the release anniversary of an all-time great video game soundtrack to celebrate:

[24] 光田康典 (Yasunori Mitsuda's) "Chrono Cross" OST: https://www.procyon-studio.co.jp/library/detail/020.html https://archive.org/details/chrono_cross-original_soundtrack-1999

The Chrono series could have been my life's biggest near miss. I had both SNES and PlayStation, but neither game. "Trigger" I played and adored via emulation back in college, and put off "Cross" for years fearing it couldn't live up to it. Unspeakably grateful!

Happy Anniversary, Mitsuda-san!

You know when you recognise an actor in a TV / film trailer and wrack your brains for the show(s) you know them from? Just bring that thought to the world of music.

ListenBrainz already lets us track our music listening from various sources and is connected to MusicBrainz, "the best music encyclopedia on the planet" – @evan in https://cosocial.ca/@evan/111598000849512991.

What if ListenBrainz could do the brain wracking for us, telling us when some song or other is playing "you know the bassist from these tracks"?

@Cognessence Hehe, oh perfect! LBA figures in two main memories for me:

  1. Playing it at a sleepover, way up in the converted loft of my high school mate's place.
  2. Putting the track 'Funky Town' (https://downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/little-big-adventure-ms-dos/08_Funky%2520Town.mp3) on this crazy mixtape, tickled to death by that "Oh my knee" line from the game.

Never heard of Toonstruck, nor played the rest, so I have much to explore.

By the way, no, that wasn't Ian playing on my track! Just me.

The index is finished!!! It only took me 3 months, lol. :blobcatsipsweat:

My question is: was no one pressing records in 1966? There's only one album in our list from that year (Alton Ellis) and it's not even a full album, it's a compilation that includes some singles released in '66.

https://1001otheralbums.com/index/

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@buffyleigh Check out how they mixed Cher's one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13j8kBehIj4

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@buffyleigh Amazing, cheers!

Yeah, maybe it depends how we slice it? Either keep it close and only include, you know, "album era" albums; or consider their function as a recording of music and broaden it out to let other eras bring in music recorded in the media available to them.

By the way, on defining stuff, I wonder if you'd be into this poll (17 hours left) by @sean_ae from Autechre: https://mas.to/deck/@sean_ae/112455610043113581

Well, if the Conservatives have indeed been trying to throw the next General Election – as it's looked like to me for a while now – picking 4th July for it makes perfect sense.

• Probably one of the more memorable dates (along with 11th September) that isn't a national holiday here.

• Summer, so we're inclined to be out and about, and perhaps swing by our polling stations.

• Not yet the school holidays, so school-age families mostly won't be out of the country.

This morning for some reason the first thing I did was decide to listen to a random Game Gear soundtrack. I picked Alien Syndrome because it was the first I saw listed and I enjoyed it immensely.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@famousblueben Oh nice! I don't have any Game Gear ones brewing, but if Mega Drive soundtracks cut the mustard just as well for you, played on guitar, I'm aiming to upload a video including tracks from a couple of them in a day or two.

Any #inkscape users on here? I am (desperately) trying to make a cd cover cutout template. I've made the shape to be cut out from several squares, but I would now like to get rid of the inner parts of those squares ( I only need the outline of the whole shape because it's for a cutout). How the hoot do I do that?

miblo,

@madskjeldgaard Could you set the "Fill" to "No paint"? Under "Fill and Stroke" (Ctrl+Shift+f).
