I'm sick today. 🤧

But like so many parents & work from home spouses.... I'm apparently irreplaceable & I have MORE work & responsibilities today than on an average day. 😭

Oh the luxury to be able to "call in sick" and go back to bed. What does that even feel like??

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@syntaxseed the worst part of being a parent: there is just no time off. No sick leave, no annual leave, and most especially no paternity/maternity leave 😁

And when I complain to my parents about it, they tell me that you don’t even get to retire…

Why is everything about me so in-betweeny?

I'm a late Gen-Xer, but an early/borderline Xennial.

I was born and live in Swindon which is kinda on the border of West, Midlands, South and South West England.

I rarely hold extreme opinions.

I'm destined to be middle-of-everything.

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@ross personally I think those are the best people. Especially in the polarised society we live in, we need more people who are in the middle.

@xakan yep. Been running it since I first set up mastodon. Works very well in my experience.

Selfhosted instance.

I am thinking of breaking and to a separate server instead of increasing my current VPS resources.

I'll have two servers. My main, which will run Mastodon, and another that will have Postgres and ElasticSearch on it.

Will I benefit by doing this or should I just move ElasticSearch to its own server? What is the minimum CPU/ram I can get for the second server & what should I get?

Or, other thoughts welcomed.

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@paul i run my mastodon instance on two of Hetzner’s CAX 11 servers (ARM 64, 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM) and they work very smoothly. One runs mastodon (incl Postgres) the other elasticsearch)

I’m not sure it makes sense to break out Postgres and elasticsearch onto the same server: both of these need quite a lot of resources, and I’d therefore like them on different servers. The one running mastodon would otherwise probably be quite idle (relatively speaking).

I split mine out primarily because I felt this gave me more resilience: any potential issues with elasticsearch (it hogging resources, needing scaling etc) wouldn’t affect my main mastodon experience.

Been playing around with Laravel Livewire a bit today, and it’s quite cool actually.

Really a powerful way to quickly get an app with interactivity going, if you can’t or don’t want to use a JS framework.

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@luceos yeah, that seems pretty cool. One step at a time though

I cannot believe that I’ve just switched the heating back on. This weather is unbelievable! 😩

michael,

@morph to be fair, if it wasn’t for my wife i probably wouldn’t have switched it on either.

But it’s 14 C! On the last day of May.

The climate in this country is absolutely ridiculous!

@rauschma my kid taught me to say ‘flash an iso image to the usb stick’ 😂

(& others) should get a .gov for their governmental websites e.g. ".gov.de"

Would help:

  1. as both nationally & internationally
  2. Unification of domains & easier discoverability of institutions (especially for foreigners)
  3. Ranking on search results

Examples:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.gov#International_equivalents

Summary:
@Bundesregierung @bsi
CLICK HERE 4 .gov.de:

michael,

@madeindex na. .gov.de makes zero sense in German. Something like .bund.de would make more sense, but would only work for federal government stuff…

anyone have some simple software recommendations? preferably open source with open formats, but web-based would be okay too.

I once again come to the conclusion that I hate gardening.

The fact that the previous owners of this house have planted not one, not two, but three big hedges doesn’t help.

And the fact that I have bad hay fever and an even worse back is the cherry on top …

michael,

I foolishly offered to do a presentation at my kids’ career week.

Now I learn that I’ve been allocated a 45 min time slot, and I feel I have no idea what I’m supposed to say for a full 45 minutes! 🙈

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

So this was today, and turns out it was great fun.

I ended up speaking for about 20 mins, with a good 20 minutes of Q&A after.

The kids seemed to enjoy it (as did I), and asked lots of intelligent questions (and some silly ones, as you'd expect from 10-12 year olds 😁).

The teachers gave me a lot of very good feedback, too, and asked if they could invite me again next time.

The one thing that really impressed me though, was the behaviour of the kids! They were absolutely amazingly well behaved. I don't think we ever had such discipline when I was in school.
