mick,

On a Denzel Washington binge. Watched The Little Things and The Equalizer series.

mick,

This was a promotion with Sapporo when Microsoft launched Windows 95.

Other side of can.

Another view.

mick,

No. It’s not possible to find light reading about lead.

General Motors Quits Sharing Driving Behavior With Data Brokers After Backlash (www.nytimes.com)

The decision followed a New York Times report this month that G.M. had, for years, been sharing data about drivers’ mileage, braking, acceleration and speed with the insurance industry. The drivers were enrolled — some unknowingly, they said — in OnStar Smart Driver, a feature in G.M.’s internet-connected cars that...

mick,

Doubt any heads will roll. I bet this feature was approved by the C-suite and board of directors. Look, we can create two revenue streams with one simple offer—get car buyers to subscribe to On Star so we can collect data, and then sell the data. All legal because nobody reads the fine print in the contract.

mick,

Hmm. Aren’t the Great Lakes in North America connected to each other and then to the St. Lawrence River via Lake Ontario, which eventually leads to the Atlantic Ocean? Maybe the map should include those large bodies of water too.

mick,

Interesting. Aside from North America, Lake Victoria, in Africa, and many other lakes connect to Bahr al Jabal, which connects to the Nile, and eventually the Mediterranean Sea. This is leading me down the geographic rabbit hole, haha.

mick,

How do biologists determine that the lampreys migrated from the ocean versus being hatched/born in the Great Lakes?

mick,

I’m guessing they’re upset because it involves same-gender sex. If they had committed normal white collar crime, like embezzling a million dollars, nothing would have happened to them.

What would/can you grow on a balcony without much direct sunlight?

I have a balcony on raised ground floor with lots of trees hiding the sun. In the summer I get a few hours of direct sunlight, not enough to get anything flowering. I attempted growing tomatoes, and ended up with the tallest, most useless plant ever. Strawberries were also mostly leaves. There is a planter integrated on the...

mick,

Hostas grow well in shade or partial sun. Look for varieties with variegated leaves.

mick,

Haha, and they will flower too. I have a few pots with hostas and I leave them out year round. They’re perennials, so there won’t be any leaves in the winter, but they’ll grow back in the spring.

mick,

I don’t even understand what the issue is. I was always under the assumption that credit card fees were already passed along to consumers. Don’t vendors pad their prices by an extra 3-4% to cover these fees? And if customers paid in cash, vendors actually make a little extra since they don’t have to pay the fee.

[Story] "Proposing" to my girlfriend

Note: I just re-read it before posting and realized its long and I’m putting it in the “casual conversations” community… I think I’d still consider it casual because it’s just a story of day-to-day life and I’m not particularly looking for advice or feedback, it’s just for fun....

mick,

Glad you found someone to share your life with. My wife and I have been married for 30 years. Prior to marriage, we lived together during college, had a long distance relationship after graduation due to jobs, moved back together and bought a house.

One night, during a girls night out, they were chatting about our relationship. One of her friends drunkenly told her to shit or get off the pot. So she did a little thinking and one night, while we were watching tv, she turned to me and said, “Let’s get married“.

I thought about it for five seconds and said, “Ok”. We resumed with the tv show and life went on. A couple of days passed before we actually sat down and discussed why she asked me to marry her. We knew we loved each other and didn’t need a wedding or rings to prove it. Marriage was just a formality but we did it anyway. It definitely made our parents happy.

mick,

That’s hard to answer without qualifying “commercial interests”. I think of banking and other financial institutions as commercial interests, and I like having control of my finances online. I don’t have to wait until the end of the month to see credit card charges (charge notifications that pop up on my phone are nearly instantaneous). I don’t have to make a phone call to my broker to place a stock order.

A lot of people disparage Amazon, but I like the convenience. No more driving to two or three stores to find what I need.

Other commercial interests like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X—yeah, they can disappear and I wouldn’t miss them.

mick,

Ah, so what would the Internet look like if it were built by altruistic, honest people. Sadly, I must be really jaded an cynical because that’s so hard for me to envision.

Commercial interests were always exploiting resources within their spheres of influence, even before the Internet. As technology improved and new pathways emerged, they ran full speed ahead.

Your example of a news site that didn’t push their algorithms never existed. Even pre-Internet, when news was printed, every newspaper had a certain slant. In New York City—back in the 70s—there were four major papers, NY Times, Wall St Journal, NY Post, Daily News. They all had their biases.

But the one thing they couldn’t do was collect user data. Ads were static and we had a choice to either read or ignore it.

As I’m typing and doing this brain dump—it’s 1:18am, why am I not asleep—I’ve come to realize that the thing I hate most about the current state of the Internet is the vast collection of user data how companies are mining and exploiting it. If we could stop it, I would be fine with most everything else.

mick,

I’m a proponent of the 3-2-1 method. If I don’t wrap, the ribs tend to dry out. I think it’s because I can’t keep my Weber grill at 225. Even at the lowest setting with only one burner on, the temp hovers between 250-300 during the summer. I also have a Traeger smoker but haven’t tried to smoke it for the full 4-6 hours yet.

I don’t have a favorite rub. I’ve used Killer Hogs Steak Rub, Traeger’s Pork and Poultry, Montreal steak rub, and Alton Brown’s rub (look up Who Loves Ya Baby-back recipe).

I smear a light coat of mustard onto the ribs and sprinkle on a generous amount of rub. The ribs are smoked at 180° for 3 hours.

Then I wrap in foil with basting liquid and put it back in the smoker at 225 for 2 hours.

Lastly, I’ll use Baby Ray’s bbq sauce, make my own teriyaki sauce, or cook down the basting liquid.

For the last two steps, you can use the oven instead of the smoker since the smoking part is done. You’ll use fewer pellets.

mick,

Same here. His recipe is my baseline and I’ve made many variations of it, most to great success. I’ve only used Guinness for beef stew. Why didn’t I think of this? It’s so obvious, haha. Thanks for the suggestion.

Swiping out of post view no longer works after 0.2.2

Hello! I’ve been loving Thunder, but one usability feature I’ve brought over from my days of using Slide (for Reddit) is swiping right (or up, in some cases) to dismiss the post view and return to the feed. This doesn’t work where there are comments, of course, thanks to swipe actions, which I am loving, but it worked on...

mick,

I have the same problem but think I figured it out. If your finger is in the area that is 1/2 - 3/4” from the left edge, the app will grab the post and you can swipe out. Anywhere else will trigger the up/down votes.

mick,

It’s touchy. I laid a ruler on the screen to test various points before I found a spot that worked. The least frustrating work around for now is to turn off the swipe right gestures.

mick,

Yes. The conjugates for “to be” are: I am, You are, He/she is, etc.

How can I add, or improve, my kitchen? (lemmy.world)

There are only two cabinets in the kitchen that open at eye level. We need more. My wife does not want to get on a step stool to reach each cabinet. We don’t NEED more counter space, but it would be nice. We are thinking of building into the breakfast nook, or some how pushing into the pantry/butler pantry area....

mick,

Looks nice, but I agree with others about installing cabinets along the wall in the breakfast nook.

Is there a sink in the butler’s pantry? The blueprint doesn’t show it, but the photo shows something in the middle of that counter space. If so, you might want to add some counter space as well for a toaster oven and coffee maker.

I have a similar setup for the cooktop and range hood layout. After living with it for 20 years, I’d say I’m not a fan of that design. The cabinets are too close to the cooktop and will get greasy. Fumes will also rise up and around the range hood and get on the cabinets above hood. Lastly, if you ever have to replace your range hood years down the road, it’s very likely the cabinet surface being covered by the hood will be a different color than the exposed surface.

I would make the cabinets on both sides smaller, at least 6” away from cooktop and not have any cabinetry above hood.

mick,

This is perfect. He accuses Fox of using him as a scapegoat. Then he turns around and uses Fox as a scapegoat for his stupidity.

mick,

I had a brain MRI a couple of years ago and got the same. My brain and your breasts are unremarkable.

mick,

I was a CS major in late 70s and used punch cards for Fortran programs. I’m guessing “by hand” meant writing the code with pencil/pen on paper and then typing up the punch cards for each line of code.

mick,

I got Viki just to watch Reborn Rich, but then I added about 8 other shows to my watchlist, Taxi Driver 1/2, Goblin, Healer, The Second Husband (150 episodes!), etc. Looks like I will be keeping the subscription for awhile.
