This question is kind of a continuation of a discussion last week. @esnyder@MylesRyden asks about what good cycle infrastructure looks like on rural roads.

Q8. As someone living rurally in OR, I am not sure what exactly I want changed on most of the rural roads. I would love to hear more about / see some links to / etc. really good examples of what it could/should look like.

@ascentale @esnyder A8: Completely separate track for walking + biking with a grassy buffer from the car lanes. People drive their trucks fast on rural roads and a bit of shoulder is never enough.

I would read the hell out of a deep analysis of the many layers (internal, external, technical, personal, systemic, etc., etc.) that have combined to make early Google so arguably less dumb than early OpenAI.

It isn’t just rose colored glasses, right? There was no equivalent of the shareholder coup, the ScarJo voice thing, etc.?

@luis_in_brief The monetary stakes were a lot lower in tech? The one-two punch of the web 1.0 crash and 9/11 flatlined everyone’s stock charts for a while. Google seem like a cool little indie company that could be a refuge from big evil Microsoft. The dumbness may have existed but today’s tower of grift was busying itself with juicing up a housing bubble.

Protected bike lanes, transit-only lanes, and car-free streets help people shift trips away from cars, reducing car traffic and demand for parking, among other benefits (e.g. roadway safety, climate action).

We need leaders who prioritize data-proven solutions to these problems.

@LukeBornheimer one day I would love to learn wtf happened to Tumlin, given his dynamic cluefulness before SFMTA

Take two is a big improvement. I disabled all optimizations, so it draws the lines in a predictable order removing previous discontinuities.

@hamoid Do you rotate the nib to achieve the variable line weights?

Three attempts at monotile pavers as I learn to handle small amounts of concrete

Getting more uniform and consistent. Need to do four more good ones.

@vitriolix ooof, I would be so sad

migurski,
@migurski@mastodon.social avatar

@vitriolix did they make the tiles or does somebody sell them?

Number 7 turned out smooth but the neck cracked inside the mold, so for number 8 I sacrificed one of my many IKEA hex keys as rebar

Wet concrete in the mold with a hex key neck reinforcement

Finished the half-scale prototype this weekend.

My concrete mixing and handling have a lot of room for improvement, I hear vibration tables help with this a lot. I also need to design a multi-piece mold so I can do more than one tile per 48 hours, and make some improvements to the tile shape like the fragile neck area. Overall though I’m really happy with this result!

Hey vis.social!

Starting tomorrow, April 25th, @darth_mall will be helping out our moderation team as Admin.

I go in for surgery tomorrow, and expect to be in the hospital recovering for an additional 3-5 days.

If all goes as expected, I will be fully recovered in a month. But I'll be back online before then. :)

Editing to add: yep, it's Cancer. But hopefully, this surgery will take care of it.

@kristinHenry welcome back!

I hadn't visited @OpenInfraMap in a while: it's a pretty impressive custom rendering of power and telecommunication infrastructure in OpenStreetMap.

If you need something new to map in OpenStreetMap, looks like lots of neighborhoods still need to have their power poles mapped! 😳

@alan @OpenInfraMap Wow, never seen this before! If it had raster tiles they could be included as a map layer on OSM.org

Trying to think of ways to buy and transport a 20ft 2x4 1.5 miles without a car, bet I can get pretty creative but don’t want to find out it’s impossible at the lumberyard.

Obviously I chose the full- route with this one

Review: 7/10, much amusement from the yard staff, plenty of help getting it all tied up. Rode slow and easy about halfway then the board started to consistently work itself out of the front strap as the dolly encountered resistance.

Walking it the rest of the way to deal with a few turns and serious crosswalks.
