I think the bloom is off the rose for me about Mastodon. Between the utterly crap experience whenever a toot goes mildly viral, and the obnoxious HOA-ish attitudes about what "should" be “allowed" on Mastodon, this is feeling less and less like a place I wanna super invest in. Bummer.

@jacob @rcrowley Maybe running your own server cuts you off from some of the hashtag-based ways to find people? I’m on the Big Server and I’ve followed a few tags related to interests of mine that tend to make it more interesting.

    Got a new git scraper working against the PG&E (California electricity utility company) outage map, to track outages caused by the massive storm we are having

    Since it saves the most recent outages to a JSON file on GitHub you can open them up and browse them in Datasette Lite:

    Storm update: big cedar branch came down in the front and sheared off our house’s power and internet supply. Roof is damaged but not yet sure how much. Neighbors threw us an extension cord to keep the fridge & freezer going. RIP the holiday lights I spent a couple months on.

    Storm update: got our electricity back and the branch removed. PG&E contact said it was the fastest reconnect he’d seen in his 15 years, credit to Green Electric US in Berkeley. Tomorrow we hope to get Internet back.

    Storm update: This past week really knocked the wind out of us. I was really happy to have those cool LEDs out front, the pomegranate tree, and a pretty shady set-back feeling for the house. Our services are mostly back to normal but I feel like the next few weeks of trying to get insurance, costs, and repair work synchronized will be kind of a shitshow. Then we gotta figure out what to do with the front. It’s not exciting yet, just a massive drag.

    The Series Finale of The Expanse won a Hugo Award, against Andor, For All Mankind and Stranger Things.

    We're still waiting to hear about the adaptation of the last third of the books (the Laconia arc), and we won't lose hope. ✊

    Thinking about trying to set up a small solar power system, ideally to remove an extension cord from the basement to the garage. Right now there’s a turtle pond out there being heated and filtered for 1.7kWh per day. I think that would be a lot for a battery to keep up with?

    @enobacon It doesn’t, my model number has discontinued their version of this cable. I might just buy it though, see what happens when I plug it into a sacrificial RPi.
