In my quest to build the perfect I learned something kinda depressing. All these hot shit bikes with center drives don't have a standard bottom bracket, but instead a gaping hole the shape of whatever proprietary drive system they were built around. This means that when the motor makers ultimately go out of business these $5k frames are left unsupported and are worthless aluminum scrap.

mikemccaffrey,
@mikemccaffrey@mastodon.social avatar

@kaleb @eeejay Yeah, and I would imagine that there will be adapters for sale.

That being said it is a 100% tragedy that there is no international standard for ebike parts.

I just disinfected the outside of a pineapple with my far UVC lights. Yup. That’s a thing I just did. I wore my sunglasses just in case. I think I just MIB’d a pineapple.

mikemccaffrey,
@mikemccaffrey@mastodon.social avatar

@andymoose Is there some sort of human-transmissible pineapple disease that I somehow do not know about?

mikemccaffrey,
@mikemccaffrey@mastodon.social avatar

@andymoose Lol, I tend to just wash my fruit with soap and water, but I guess I don't have a fun light wand to play with.

@anniegreens @tomkindlon That sucks. Sleep is the only thing I'm actually good at accomplishing, so I really want to avoid long infections.

Last night I thought that the humidifier in our bedroom was developing terrible technical problems, since I was hearing weird gurgling and sucking sounds coming from that corner of the room. It was only when it started speaking out loud about how it hoped I was enjoying the experience, I realized that Janine fell asleep with ASMR videos playing on her phone.

This is the 3.5 hour long #asmr video Janine put on before sleeping that made me think that something was going terribly wrong with the humidifier in our bedroom. https://youtu.be/akC86Riy6fM?si=zNtumU4jSorAfJY_

Do you get text messages from randos trying to buy your home? I get them, but they think my name is John Miller and that I own a home in Florida. I decided to go down the rabbit hole and see what's at the bottom.

It turns out that they're data brokers. They sell your phone number to a bunch of vultures who will call you incessantly. (My phone ignored all of these unknown numbers. None of them left voicemail messages.) They never texted me again after this exchange.

A screenshot of a long list of missed phone calls from iOS, every one marked as “Possible Spam.”

What is the dead simplest way for a beginner HTML hobbyist to get their website on the internet?

mikemccaffrey,
@mikemccaffrey@mastodon.social avatar

@bw If you are just using static HTML, GitHub Pages are usually a good option.

mikemccaffrey,
@mikemccaffrey@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw @bw Yes, it is another thing to learn, but version management is perhaps even more useful for beginning developers since if they accidentally mess anything up, they know they have a copy of the previous state of the code.

mikemccaffrey,
@mikemccaffrey@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw @bw An underused feature of GitHub is you can actually just use the UI to directly add and edit pages in your repo/site. It completely bypasses the need for FTP clients and such, and ends up being much simpler overall.

github interface where you can push the little pencil button see options for editing the file within github itself or through integrated editing services.

Goddamn it, the one productive thing I've managed to figure out this year is that using a humidifier dramatically helps me breathe when I sleep, and now even that will kill me. https://mstdn.science/@jeffgilchrist/111870333897769088

@CassandraZeroCovid That will involve a lot of driving water around the city or buying a whole RO system, so I'm wondering if the possible health risks from the suspended minerals is really worth all the environmental impact of the alternatives to tap water.

mikemccaffrey,
@mikemccaffrey@mastodon.social avatar

@incanus Yeah, I feel like we don't have particularly hard water with a lot of minerals to particulate.

I am debating putting some of my laundry into a flat-rate Canada Post box and mailing it to myself rather than face packing it all back up to carry home. Good/bad idea?

mikemccaffrey,
@mikemccaffrey@mastodon.social avatar

@Johannab If you send it by ground transportation rather than bringing it on an airplane then it is the better option for the environment, and I applaud your selfless dedication to the planet.

    I rarely think about the Roman Empire, but definitely do spend too much time trying to figure out the history behind the ancient cities in .

    1. Why are they underground? Were they hiding from something dangerous on the surface?

    2. Why is the structure around the main portal build like a walled fort to defend from outside threats?

    3. If the skulk is the thing they were hiding from, does that mean it came from the outside world, rather than being an infection that spread from portal?

    mikemccaffrey,
    @mikemccaffrey@mastodon.social avatar

    My best guess is:

    1. The ancient people retreated to underground cities to escape the zombie outbreak.

    2. They build fortifications in those cities in case the zombies got down there.

    3. The skulk/wardens were perhaps introduced on purpose to further deter the zombies.

    4. Maybe the big portal was used to bring wardens through from another dimension.

    5. The skulk got out of control either after the residents returned to the surface to become villagers or caused that move.

    But overall, 🤷.
