I dont know how we reached a point as a society where a man can stand in front of a crowd with this picture behind him and utter the phrase "the difference is striking" without being driven out of the village by someone playing a flute or something but we've taken a wrong turn somewhere.

Today Chris Stuckmann released a review of The Fall Guy where he laments the lack of a Best Stunt category at the Oscars, going so far as to say the phrase "for some reason" as though it's a mystery.

This guy fancies himself a filmmaker and doesn't know that the oft-repeated reason is that rewarding the best stunt with an Oscar will result in productions pushing for bigger and bigger stunts to win the award, which will cause people to die.

Is this not obvious to someone "in the industry"?

mknepprath,
@mknepprath@mastodon.social avatar

@rodhilton Solved by measuring stunts by their execution and not scale; execution includes safety precautions that were put in place. Assuming it’s voted on by a body of their peers, it will not result in the people laying down their lives every year for posthumous Oscar. Don’t think professionals in the field would appreciate being referred to as a bunch of death-obsessed danger junkies, either

mknepprath,
@mknepprath@mastodon.social avatar

@rodhilton I’m sure some have. The argument is reductive imo. The award would mainly be about how it contributes to the artistry of the film. This does not correlate 1:1 with how dangerous it is. It’s already a category in some award shows, too

You know how COVID suppresses the sense of smell? Based on what I’ve seen while driving over last several weeks, there’s a new variant running rampant that removes people’s ability to perceive the color red. Stop lights, stop signs, all just gone from their perception. The result is damn near tragicomic.

“Hollywood is now kind of similar to the VC mind-set of scale at all costs. Where everything has to be the biggest thing or it’s not worth doing. Actually, I kind of like the small businesses that are self-sustaining and not trying to go public. And I like the small movies that are for specific people, not everybody on the planet. I hope that a business model reemerges to support that” https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/movies/2024/03/12/disruptors-adam-frucci-silicon-valley/

Watched First Reformed. Confident, bold, and brave; I’m having a hard time coming up with a contemporary equal. One truly does have to reach back to Dreyer to find work this contemplative.

I think I’d love to watch a cut of this that slices the entirety of Koyaanisqatsi into That One Scene. https://letterboxd.com/mknepprath/film/first-reformed/?i=flletterboxd-review-542681599

    @rodhilton is that the platform “working”?

    I'm not surprised by the rumors the Microsoft is getting out of the console hardware game. In fact I'm surprised Nintendo has stayed in it so long.

    My understanding has always been that the hardware is sold at a near-loss, and the money is made on software sales (games).

    If I were Microsoft, I'd go back to a model that worked well for decades: license Windows for various manufacturers. You make the machine, pay us for the OS. Modify Windows to have a better couch-gaming mode, sell that.

    mknepprath,
    @mknepprath@mastodon.social avatar

    @rodhilton not sure I buy the premise here. Nintendo’s hardware is so much more a part of their brand identity than Xbox ever was for Microsoft - almost as monolithic as the games in my mind. Nintendo without the gameboy or N64 or switch feels hollow, like post-dreamcast sega

    mknepprath,
    @mknepprath@mastodon.social avatar

    @rodhilton @wtfwtf_ok I still own and love all of my old Nintendo consoles, can’t say the same for any other company. Maybe because other companies’ new devices obsolete their old ones in a way that Nintendo’s often don’t

    mknepprath,
    @mknepprath@mastodon.social avatar

    @rodhilton Did I really have to list them all to avoid this response 🤣 No, they haven’t all been hits, don’t think that invalidates the point

    mknepprath,
    @mknepprath@mastodon.social avatar

    @rodhilton I would’ve completely agreed with you during the Wii U era, I was begging them to release full games for iOS. I’ve definitely flipped on this and would honestly be sad if they stopped releasing weird fun things in the hardware space because it’s just… so… Nintendo. And none of it has annoyed me quite as much as it seems to have bothered you 😅

    mknepprath,
    @mknepprath@mastodon.social avatar

    @rodhilton The assumption being that this would be better for Nintendo’s brand and bottom line? I’d like to see those numbers!

    I don’t recall the GCN controller being all that gimmicky, so that confuses me. Probably the closest they’ve come to a standard controller design maybe ever?

    I think I just fundamentally don't see it as impressive to direct a movie like The Holdovers and earn a Best Picture nom for it.

    It's such a formulaic and predictable story, as soon as I read the description I knew exactly the story beats that would be hit.

    It's really great, but it's a really great version of the same tired story that is a shoo-in for an Oscar nom. I feel the same way about Maestro and, yes, even Oppenheimer. Destined for a nomination by nature. You'd have to snatch defeat.

    mknepprath,
    @mknepprath@mastodon.social avatar

    @rodhilton I think that’s definitely a factor, and Nolan’s filmography thus far has been fairly Marvel-adjacent; he’s shepherded them to this moment by becoming sort of a populist auteur. Hard to attribute agency to the academy as a whole since it comes down to the votes, but I think they do love a good career arc and it might just feel like this is Nolan’s crowning moment. Definitely has a feeling of inevitability around it.

    mknepprath,
    @mknepprath@mastodon.social avatar

    @rodhilton the fact that it isn’t #1 just shows what an incredible year for film it was. I bet if it had come out any other year of the past decade (save 2019??) it’d be top of the list. Instead it may end up not getting a single oscar 😶 which I do mostly attribute to the part 1-ness, but still…
