@yakkoj Until recently I was hosting a public archive of the Sun System Handbook and then Oracle DMCA’d my host 😤
Now I need to make a new host somewhere that doesn’t care about DMCA
I designed a printable 3D model of the kids' beds from Bluey! This was super fun and rewarding as my preschooler has a bunch of the Bluey character figures and wanted to make their bedroom. I used stills from the show as reference, but proportioned it to fit the figures nicely.
I’m glad I attended the concert twice so I could get two Pixmob bracelets. I want to try out some of the reverse engineering efforts to build an infrared blaster to control them, if possible. When the concert ended, it seems they blasted a command to put them into a permanent colour loop, which is fun! I don’t want to lose that on both if I mess one up.
They’re such clever devices. They’ve got a little 8 bit processor and some storage. These models are controlled with infrared. During the shows a few times I covered the IR receiver with my hand and the bracelet kept going for about 10 seconds.
I’m guessing they broadcast instructions in batches and/or instructions are like “do this for the next X seconds”.
For a fire/CO2 detector that has several "the battery is not replaceable" stickers on it, this thing sure looks like I could replace the battery.
It's a 3v lithium. The brown thing is a CO electrochemical cell.
@moira@smellsofbikes They should explain that on the sticker instead of pretending the battery can’t be replaced. I’d have the exact same thought of “bullshit. The battery can 100% be replaced” as it can it most any device.
What’s the CO cell for? Doesn’t help with detection somehow?
Today’s mod has been installing an xStation into a PlayStation 1. A perfect fit for a system with broken CD drive. Now I’ve got a 128 GB microSD card in there loaded with games.
Also, the 8BitDo controller adapter works so well with a DualShock 4. Wireless controller!
@davespice It's a kit. The two main things to do are solder a QSB, lift some pins, remove a resistor. It's not that bad. I screwed up the first time around and lifted pins off the wrong chip (it looks exactly the same). But the second time around, all good!
@davespice I don’t have experience with any. Both PlayStation consoles I modded already had a mod chip in them that I had to remove. A simple 4 wire thing. I think I’ve seen videos about that even being a simple DIY with some generic chip. I’m sure YouTube has answers on that.
@donni Same! My brain is like “remember in 7th grade you made this comment to sound smart and clever but you actually sounded like an asshole and made someone uncomfortable? Yeah, good times.”
@arstechnica It’s hard to muster any excitement for Analogue products because of their artificially scarcity. It’s a shame since they seem to be nice products.
TIL that since 2008, there has been a capital letter form of ß in German and that letter ẞ has been a part of Unicode since 5.1.0 (2008).
Now I'm wondering when/how/if i18n libs will start using this.
Currently Elixir, Ruby, and Python convert ß to SS when capitalising text and Perl uses the wrong (lowercase) letter.
@catsalad@kalleboo Nice research! That’s going to be interesting when/if software development platforms update to this and we’ll have different casing rules in the wild. Although we do now and it’s not really an issue apparently.
I just always found it interesting how upcasing a string with ß would increase its length but not the reverse.
"real name" policies are evidence that there are people in charge who have never moved to another country
you wanna know what my real name is? according to whomst, exactly? hell in the US various federal orgs couldn't even agree on what my name was supposed to be. no, scratch that, even the social security administration, internally, couldn't agree on what my name was and changed it like 4 times over a 6 year stay
