Now I need to make a new host somewhere that doesn’t care about DMCA

Fuck Oracle.

These are excellent ideas for making English writing more clear both for native speakers but especially those learning it as a second language, without actually changing spelling.

Probably my biggest complaint even as a native speaker is homographs. They can make you stop and pause to figure out what word is actually meant.

Object or object? Content or content? Read or read? Present, present, or present?

Someone add this stuff to autocorrect.

Nothing has me running away from a website faster than the pricing page having "Book a demo", "Request a quote", "Get in touch".

Give me the price or you don't exist to me.

I designed a printable 3D model of the kids' beds from Bluey! This was super fun and rewarding as my preschooler has a bunch of the Bluey character figures and wanted to make their bedroom. I used stills from the show as reference, but proportioned it to fit the figures nicely.

@cassidy Those look so good! Thanks for sharing, I’m going to print some for my niece so her Bluey and Bingo have nice beds in Barbie’s Dreamhouse 😬

I’m glad I attended the concert twice so I could get two Pixmob bracelets. I want to try out some of the reverse engineering efforts to build an infrared blaster to control them, if possible. When the concert ended, it seems they blasted a command to put them into a permanent colour loop, which is fun! I don’t want to lose that on both if I mess one up.

mroach,
@mroach@mas.to avatar

They’re such clever devices. They’ve got a little 8 bit processor and some storage. These models are controlled with infrared. During the shows a few times I covered the IR receiver with my hand and the bracelet kept going for about 10 seconds.

I’m guessing they broadcast instructions in batches and/or instructions are like “do this for the next X seconds”.

Of course there’s a lot more info on GitHub.

There's a story of developer (me) having a no good very bad morning because of this loaded gun that Rails leaves on the table.

Just imagine you're fixing some production data and you accidentally type User.update instead of user.update and realise you just updated not one, but every single record in the database with the same value.

Also, thank goodness for PostgreSQL point-in-time database restoration 😓
(I updated a field excluded from audit logs, of course)

A former coworker just posted a Facebook memory from when $MSFT hit $30 in 2012 which was unprecedented after the lost decade under Steve Ballmer.

It’s at $410 this morning. This is the difference Satya made and ironically Steve Ballmer has benefited the most from the stock rise

@carnage4life Pretty nice chart. Almost as nice as Home Depot for the same period.

For a fire/CO2 detector that has several "the battery is not replaceable" stickers on it, this thing sure looks like I could replace the battery.
It's a 3v lithium. The brown thing is a CO electrochemical cell.

mroach,
@mroach@mas.to avatar

@moira @smellsofbikes They should explain that on the sticker instead of pretending the battery can’t be replaced. I’d have the exact same thought of “bullshit. The battery can 100% be replaced” as it can it most any device.

What’s the CO cell for? Doesn’t help with detection somehow?

Today’s mod has been installing an xStation into a PlayStation 1. A perfect fit for a system with broken CD drive. Now I’ve got a 128 GB microSD card in there loaded with games.

Also, the 8BitDo controller adapter works so well with a DualShock 4. Wireless controller!

@davespice It's a kit. The two main things to do are solder a QSB, lift some pins, remove a resistor. It's not that bad. I screwed up the first time around and lifted pins off the wrong chip (it looks exactly the same). But the second time around, all good!

mroach,
@mroach@mas.to avatar

@davespice Voultar has a great video on how to install it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVf-dIM1f6k

Just be aware the kit is not compatible with SCPH-9XXX versions of the console and also not some of the 7XXX.

mroach,
@mroach@mas.to avatar

@davespice I don’t have experience with any. Both PlayStation consoles I modded already had a mod chip in them that I had to remove. A simple 4 wire thing. I think I’ve seen videos about that even being a simple DIY with some generic chip. I’m sure YouTube has answers on that.
