I recently found a poster on why you should choose Open Educational Practices. I have made a Canva version of the poster if you'd like to remix a copy for yourself.

msjennmo,

A couple reasons why you should choose :

  1. Access to
  • reduced costs for students
  • localized content
  • improved academic integrity
  1. Alignment With
  • learning outcomes
  • teaching values
  • institutional priorities
  1. Agency for
  • instructors to control content in learning materials (instead of commercial publishers)
  • Students to contribute knowledge (instead of just consuming)

Here is a statement from a West Virginia Linguistics professor whose entire department has been eliminated. It provides additional context to the Provost's decision to cancel 38 majors and the tenure and untenured faculty lines associated with them.

msjennmo,

@ustrimova @academicchatter I think part of this is what you mean by "better." More on target for your topic? Fewer results?

As a who works on searches, I would love to learn more about why you say the ChatGPT search is better. I've yet to see it produce a search with accurate controlled vocabulary, among other issues.

I wrote a blog post today with my thoughts on Twitter and the for the PaLA CRD blog.

https://crdpala.org/2023/07/28/where-is-library-twitter-now-alternatives-to-the-bird-site/

Spoiler alert, I'm noticing four candidates:

  1. Mastodon,
  2. Discord,
  3. Substack, and
  4. remaining on Twitter.

What have you noticed? What are your disciplines doing now that it's been a bit since this started?

I love that idea Jen! How do you hang it up? I'm in a campus office so even minor construction is not an option.

I think it depends on the purpose of your account. If you plan on using it mainly for professional means and want to build your professional brand, then yes I can see it.

Anyone have any examples of using Kanban board to replace a spreadsheet? @thesiswhisperer have you tried this yet?

msjennmo,

@StephZihms @thesiswhisperer

Interested in the replies you receive. My partner just found and loves it, but hasn't used it in an academic setting yet.

@academicchatter or @phdstudents may have something to contribute here as well. @librarians have you heard anything from your people about this?

I neglected to include this in my original post. OER stands for open educational resources, or resources that allow people to retain, revise, remix, reuse, and redistribute the resources to meet their purposes.

Working on a project this morning with a heavy assist from (web based tool utilizing the Technique). In my last 25 minute work sprint I plan to finish re-reading and editing the manuscript and review the tables. Then I'm off to 's virtual conference.

I am finding more and more groups on Discord since last November. I am part of a Discord, a Discord, and now a State conference Discord. Maybe this is a coincidence, but it seems more and more are making the switch to this platform and form of networking, even with the added need to advertise the community. Is this a trend anyone else has noticed?

Hey @medlibs, @libraries, and @librarians. Check out this post by @pam! They are mentoring some faculty who are creating a Library & Archival Studies Concentration in Africana Studies at their institution.

I just learned about Retraction Watch an independent site that tracks retracted scientific papers.

Looks very useful. Has anyone followed it or used it for a while?

msjennmo,

@prachisrivas @academicchatter A lot of are incredibly familiar with Retraction Watch. I highly recommend reaching out to your local academic library and speaking with a subject expert for your discipline or a librarian about this. They will be an incredibly useful resource when it comes to keeping up with .
