@FraumitFahrrad
Schwierig.
Cassea: Recommendations for Electronic Sellenrs(to Germany) that have low shipping and low minimum order prices?
We don't need much, just some breadboard, small cap, resistor, comparator and a full-bridge schottky rectifier.
Attempting to 'persuade' a cheap lighting controller that we bought not to fall into sleep mode. If this fails we'll just swap it with an ESP, the control signals are easy enough.
The idea of having a dedicated venue for #OpenScience, akin to Dagstuhl and Oberwolfach, would be amazing, wouldn't it?
We could use this place to create systemic change, allow exhausted researchers to reboot, run hackathons, summer schools, seminars, workshops, or celebrate our achievements in improving the quality of research... 💭

@HeidiSeibold
brand/reputation.
As much as I like the Dagstuhl idea, it is ONE lighthouse. Most folks in science will never be able to go there. So it is very much like a Ivy-league secluded place, or Davos.
We need to make Open Science accessible, by everyone. That means we need many places, that can facilitate quality research, and that even mingles with early career Scientists (possibly even Undergrads?)
I do not think centralized structures are the answer, hence build a federated model
@HeidiSeibold
And yes, your Hackerspace, or coworking space is an excellent analogy.
Why are students not able to go to other universities and get a desk, be able to do some serious collaboration. Same goes for researchers. It is either contacts or bust, given that universities often lack this kind of places.
Places where small groups could rent in with focus, where a changing crowd is seriously working. Yet has access to academic tools and more.
@HeidiSeibold
… or at least be able to facilitate small conferences/workshops by students.
What I see in many universities is that rooms and desk space is closely guarded, access is limited.
Seats that are not attached to one chair rather rare.
Access to some tools from some institutes? Not really managed.
So having dedicated study houses, that are easy to get into, and be part of academic life, on campus, are really needed.
Conferences with 600 Euro Entrance fee are another barrier.
@HeidiSeibold
Considering that even I know of German chairs not being able to send their staff working on a topic to the major conferences due to cost (only 2) while at the same time chairing working groups
So yes, money w/o being part of a chair makes it even worse. Yet we need people from all fields and even professionals to help us.
That is why we need to have many accessible places that help us get quality research done. -> Federated structures mixed with decent reputation might help.
@HeidiSeibold
To add:
I believe that the tools are there, to make small hybrid conferences a reality. We can provide spaces that link various remote places and have small subgroups in the rooms to work together, and not be at home or in a random anonymous cafe in the zoom meeting.
I think we really could use more of this kind of infrastructure. Again: Having a brand/common term that is in the acknowledgement of papers that come out, might help. As In-Kind funding that is easy to get.
@michaeldorner
I think there is no problem with having both
I have seen Universities locking down Services for Students. 24hr access disappeared in many computer pools. Rooms for students became "bookable" and they vanished to make place for offices.
More and more doors are locked, class rooms not accessible to learn is the norm nowadays
My university has a room (planned) utilization rate that is insane. Efficient some say, no room for others others do
@michaeldorner
And everyone nowadays knows what a hackerspace is.
Why not get something for open science running?
Hubs where practioners and science meet.
We see a lot of startup places at universities too. They have offices, skilled staff, and are often still half way scientists as they spin off.
Yet science does not pay rent, and hence this is all private stuff that they hope will pay off one day
I have once seen a student house at TU-Graz, build from Student fees, that fits @HeidiSeibold
