Proprietary tools that offer a lot for free, without fail, will squeeze you. And unfortunately, because of their nature, a lot gets left behind when you inevitably migrate.
When we select tools for our communities, we need to think over longer time horizons.
FOSS options like Matrix for chat and Discourse for forums are the better bet.

And on the other side, I have quite often seen some well meaning volunteer quickly click a google solution or whatever for a group. Cant be so hard to setup, right?
So what do we do about this kind of stuff? Momentum to move is huge.
Github and others show that there is real interest. And all the accompanying infrastructure (Mailinglist? Hell, even Email is hard) is not always a priority

At least for Germany handling small donations/payments is a PITA.
So you have a huge amount of overhead costs due to the small payments and accounting.
So yeah, I would love to see many good ethical hosts out there, with a decent list and pros and con, in all kinds of flavours.
I doubt I see cheap and account based as viable tho. And would highly recommend against that race to the bottom.
I think some instances did very nice costs breakdowns incl moderation.

There is another group, often overlooked which is side projects/side services.
Your fediverse instance is where you login. But there are services run by folks who provide content. Like peertube and pixelfed, guppe and others, flohmarkt and many many more to come.
They do primarily help their users share their conten. And you, to see their content.
So consider looking left and right, and help the ecosystem by helping adjacent services. Not only your fediverse instance.

Whether we realize to get hosting back the hands of community and are able to sustain it.
No, not everyone needs to be able to run their own stuff. But a small dedicated group doing hosting for a couple of clubs, videos, pictures, communication. Should be doable and people should throw in some money so they can do it.

Yeah. I am aware of this, I think it is quite hard to change certain mindsets from corporate view, as participation for small companies and individuals means way more than just membership fees.
Just imagine Aaron Swartz doing his RSS stuff as kid in a non IETF setting that demands membership fees.
And there are plenty of overlooked communities as well.
And yes, I think RIPE and IETF do an awesome jobs there. And I see IETF participation already as hard for some groups.

Especially my take is: Students et al who need to grow into it still need to pay housing + travel. So even if the fee is waived, it is a significant bareer.

I do not think the mesh networking was the killer feature. Advanced by standards back then, I remember discussions about where data is, How offline communities can be formed with flaky Internet access not happening all the time
For me the screen was well ahead of the time. Never forget the illiad with eink was around 2005ish as well (with horrible design flaws)

I had to take a mandatory training on Section 508 -- and mandatory trainings can be 🤷♀️ but this training + something @hrbrmstr mentioned got me thinking about using some of the speech-to-text tools.
I've been trying the speech-to-text tool built into MS Outlook, works pretty well! But I need a totally different mindset than when typing to use it.
Does anyone have suggestions for speech-to-text that run on Ubuntu | Linux? (pls don't @ me "Ubuntu is not linux," I do not have the energy)
Well, we used the bigger models and it worked extremely well for "no effort, just CPU cycles", and we even used it on some German scientific podcasts and have been blown away.

Excel ist klassisch EDV, das sollte man auch einführen, damit nicht der Eindruck entsteht Excel und Word seien Optional. Man muss einfach Office (in welchem Geschmack auch immer) inzwischen bedienen können. Informatik sollte klar Informatik werden und nicht Bedienung von Programmen
Ansonsten, Ich hatte Informationstechnik, also auch Mischung ET as Leistungskurs, neben Informationsverarbeitung, und vielen anderen Dingen. Ja CAD, Java Programmierung und viele andere Dinge @2ndStar

Das Problem ist dass es halt den gesellschaftlichen Konsens gab: billiges Essen gegen Subventionen.
Das war so gewollt und Jahrzehntelang politik.
Das zu Entflechten dauert.
Man muss auch nur einmal schaun wie so die Lebensmittelpreise in anderen wohlhabenden EU Ländern sind.
Das andere ist, dass sie auf ca 40k Euro Gewinn pro unbezahlte Arbeitskraft kommen, quasi deren Einkommen. Wo viele gerade poltern dass das viel zu viel sei.
Und mir fehlt das Camp „wenn man die Technik entlang ihrer Stärken einsetzt, ist es ein reiner Segen“.
Beispiel: wir nutzen das an Bibliotheken in Beratungssituationen für: „übersetze diesen Text in Sprache X und dann gleich auch in leichte Sprache“.
Und klar kann man da wieder einwenden: „Ja klar, so kann sich der öffentliche Dienst 80 Dolmetscher:innen einsparen, Skankdal!!12“ aber merkt ihr selber.

Es erinnert mich immer stark an einen Bekannten der aus Syrian kam, falsche Kaste, deshalb in Saudi-Arabien lebte auf Visum und mit dem nächsten Visum dann an meiner Uni Studierte in Deutschland. MSc. Informatik. 1. Antrag alles kein Ding, 2. Antrag wegen Verlängerung (er hat 6Semester gebraucht) fiel in ungünstige Zeit.

Wer aber meint ein Schweisser auf dem Bau muss Goethe rezitieren können, und sich genauso geschliffen ausdrücken. Sollte nochmal überlegen ob die Germanisten wirklich das Gebäude bauen sollten.
Die jungen Jahrgängen sind weniger, die Anforderungen an sie hoch. Viele Arbeitgeber haben gelinde gesagt auch Erwartungen wo sich zu Recht keiner bewirbt.

Ich wäre auch vorsichtig bezüglich Plagiat/fehlenden Quellen.
Die gelten zumindest an der Uni Bremen fächerübergreifend und es gibt genau eine Warnung.
Und ich vermute dass Personen die Tools in allen Fächern nutzen, dh ggf gleichzeitig in zwei Fächern erwischt werden. @2ndStar@expertenkommision_cyberunfall
