If you're still on Twitter:

Know that if there's just ONE person only still staying on Twitter to interact with/follow you, by closing your account, you can get them off too.

@SirTapTap Shouldn't we post this on twitter instead of Mastodon?

I'm actually thinking of going back on Twitter just to post messages such as yours.

"i'm really thinking about deinstalling pixelfed"

It was unfortunate to see this, especially from someone who's been with us for a few years

I admit I've been so busy with FediDB, Sup, PubKit and other projects that I haven't given @pixelfed the attention it deserves lately

I was able to resolve most of their complaints, and I'm working on fixing a long standing bug affecting multiple filters on the WebUI

I'll do better to balance my resources, please bear with me ❤️

@dansup Do you have other people helping you? Are you the main driver on all these projects?

Can y'all imagine what the would be like if the projects had the kind of funding to enable this scale of development?

narF,

@thisismissem @staidwinnow I imagine a world where this could be funded by public money, like public schools, libraries or transport!

narF,
@narF@mstdn.fr avatar

@thisismissem @staidwinnow Oh yeah I know. We need more money in public services. We can't expect them to turn a profit!

One annoying aspect of the @pixelfed app is how app settings were not synced between devices or sessions

I recently shipped support for first and third party app settings to allow synchronized settings across apps!

Imagine setting your theme to dark mode in @PixelDroid and then logging in to the official app with dark mode automatically set, wouldn't that be nice 😎

narF,
@narF@mstdn.fr avatar

@dansup @leadegroot @pixelfed @PixelDroid Profiles seems overly complicated in terms of UI. Maybe just sync by default and have a switch to not sync

@JimmyChanga @Dracocide @fuck_cars That would be me. I hadn't cycled for at least 13 years but started again last year (on the same old bike, that my mom had kept!)

@JimmyChanga It's very useful for the groceries or any stores that are 15-30 minutes walk distance, to turn that into a 5-10 minutes affair!

A movie that makes you go "Oh, this is structured like a video game! :D" and another movie that makes you go "Oh… this is structured like a video game :/"

narF,
@narF@mstdn.fr avatar

@jason @mcc You might like the Japanese movie "River", which is currently touring in movie festivals. A movie about a 2 minutes time loop, but all the actors are aware of the loop (unlike Groundhog Day where only 1 person is aware)

All filmed in long shots of exactly 2m00s, no cuts! The camera often follows behind the main actress, making it feel videogame-y.

It's an excellent movie, funny and smart! I want to watch it again when it releases!

The @pixelfed Groups feature has been ready but unshipped for over 2 years now

I will be shipping the Groups beta ASAP (without federation initially) and will work out federation and UI improvements along with community feedback afterwards.

@dansup @shlee @pixelfed I like the separate timelines idea!

@narF@mstdn.fr avatar

This is an excellent website to share to people who have joined Mastodon but have stopped using it. It's the user on-boarding that Mastodon should provide when you create your account. It would make sure new users' timeline isn't empty, but instead filled messages that are interesting to them.

@spreadmastodon The link in your Mastodon bio seems broken: https://spreadmastodon.org/more-about-mastodon

narF,

@spreadmastodon This is an amazing website. Hopefully Mastodon could take notice and improve its user onboarding in a similar way! I like the idea of using categories of people to follow. To make sure the timeline isn't empty at first!

narF,
@narF@mstdn.fr avatar

@spreadmastodon I did notice that had a pretty good user onboarding. I remember it ask the new user to write an introduction post, and I think they recommand some users to follow, but I don't think it's as elaborate as Spread Mastodon is.

The one thing (and there is only one) that I miss about Twitter is being able to tag companies when I have something to bitch about (I mean provide feedback). Surprising how well that works.

narF,
@narF@mstdn.fr avatar

@grumpygamer It only worked for people with lots of followers... 😕

narF,
@narF@mstdn.fr avatar

@Mango7874 Lemmy and Mastodon are different project but both speak the same protocol (the same "language") so messages can be exchanged between both. Kinda like following a Twitter user using a Facebook account or a Youtube account, and still being able to like and comment. This is the magic trick of the Fediverse: multiple websites, multiple servers, different interfaces, but all using the same protocol (speaking the same language)

atomicpoet, to bluesky

now allows you to “choose your own algorithm”.

Which sounds “incredible” and “sci-fi”—but it really isn’t.

What it essentially does is give a Twitter-like service Reddit-like features.

As an aside, now I’m wondering why Reddit doesn’t offer an alternative web front-end to make it more Twitter-like!

But how does this apply to the flavour of the ? This feature now makes me realize how big a deal Fediverse groups are going to be, and if I were @Gargron, I’d be even more excited about rolling out Mastodon’s group functionality.

Because while groups aren’t exactly relevancy algorithms, once you add a “New”, “Hot”, “Best”, etc. feed to groups, now you’re in business.

I don’t know if choosing your own algorithm is the killer feature that Bluesky thinks it is. My experience is that most people hate choice. Nevertheless, I still thinks it’s important.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews @matthieu_xyz I wrote this thread about sorting algorithmn for Mastodon 3 years ago and it got a lot of interest and replies.

The first approach to "warehouses", channels, rooms. Personally, I don't like the solutions seen on , but people seem to like them. And yet, the user interface is for people, not for themselves. At least to a large extent.

While reddit's layout isn't fully polished (many subreddit-related modules and pages still use the old layout), I decided to use a drop-down menu that I don't like and redesign it a bit.

@mattblaze @mjf_pro @FinchHaven @nunesgh If you only look at this piece of the puzzle, you're missing the bigger picture. If someone was impersonating another and trying to abuse the Verified system, others could report that bad actor and server admins would quickly block that bad actor. The verification check mark is only one piece of the whole moderation machine. 🙂
