Sometimes I wonder if we expect too much from our planet...

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@ross The weather forecast can be done on a coin in the UK, heads - it's rain, tails - it's likely to rain!

After ruminating on this for quite a while... in terms of the climate and how it's affected by our addition to electricity. Right now you have 2 choices... use less or stop using as much. Everything else is folly. I say this from a laptop uploading photos of my family to the cloud. The dilemma / addition is real!

@phillycodehound I have a ticket, but I doubt that I'll make it as it crosses the school holidays in the UK!

I have kids, several in fact. I made it a policy years ago to never share their images, thoughts, achievements etc. Last night I came so close to breaking that rule, but I'm glad that I didn't. I love that my kids get to make their own way without a legacy of my 'proud' moments.

@ross There's some horrendous images of me on the walls of my parents house, and I see this like that, writ large!

Via Slashdot, in the because-of-course-they-are and garbage-in-garbage-out dept.

The people paid to train AI are outsourcing their work… to AI
It’s a practice that could introduce further errors into already error-prone models.

"....a team of researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) hired 44 people on the gig work platform Amazon Mechanical Turk to summarize 16 extracts from medical research papers. Then they analyzed their responses using an AI model they’d trained themselves that looks for telltale signals of ChatGPT output, such as lack of variety in choice of words. They also extracted the workers’ keystrokes in a bid to work out whether they’d copied and pasted their answers, an indicator that they’d generated their responses elsewhere.

They estimated that somewhere between 33% and 46% of the workers had used AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. It’s a percentage that’s likely to grow even higher as ChatGPT and other AI systems become more powerful and easily accessible, according to the authors of the study, which has been shared on arXiv and is yet to be peer-reviewed."

@briankrebs In some ways, it's a race to the bottom.

Ooh, here’s a new dark pattern I’ve not seen before. Decline cookies and you get a spinner saying it may take a few minutes to set your prefs, with a large cancel button. Utter bullshit.

@Floppy Good grief!

On the one hand, I feel like a total luddite with all this “AI” stuff.

On the other hand, I feel like I've so quickly absorbed the extent of the technology's application that it's become normal and boring.

There is lots of hype, but very little actually revolutionary stuff happening now. It's all just making more words and images in different contexts.

Don't get me wrong, the making words and images is very clever. Sometimes. But the applications of it are not exciting me.

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@ross I've yet to have the 'shine' of those advances (images / text etc.) wear off on me. I'm still blown away that a machine made of a variety of metals + electrons can make this stuff!

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@ross Oh that's interesting. Yeah, I think that I'm quite child like about this. I'm still in something close to awe of it all! Frightened awe though!

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@ross @theinstantwin Yes, oddly, the less 'wow' it is, the more I'm interested!

Just wondered if you had any thoughts on AI and ? Should WordPress build aspects of AI into Core and what would they be? Perhaps this should be entirely the domain of plugins? What do you think?

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@tim Yeah, I hear you. I think that having it as opt-in is the way to go. I wonder if things like image generation will creep in?

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@chris What if the AI was pretty benign, like Q. What industry are you in? A. I'm in car sales. Q. Would you like to see some design patterns for sites like your? A. Yes. Q. Here's 12 pages and a few Block Patterns you might like to look at... What about that?

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@chris Good point. I've no idea!

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@tim This is my dilemma as well. I fear for the jobs which will be eroded!

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@chris @tim Exactly that! Urgh!

nathan,
@nathan@wpbuilds.social avatar

@chris @tim Yes the consumption of the endeavours of humans which is then churned by the LLM and then spat out with no recognition; this bothers me.

It's inevitable that throughout my career, I've watched as my work gets replaced and updated by others. It's rare to be asked to redesign old work, which is why I leapt at the chance when @thunderbird asked if I could design a contemporary update to the Thunderbird logo. The one I designed 19 years ago!

I’ll do a proper blog post soon, but for now you can read more here:
