The state spending more resources on prisons and incarcerating people over education is disgusting. The states disregards human potential over profit. The state perpetuates crime. Instead of punishment, people need education and rehabilitation. We need to uplift people, not continue the cycles of imprisonment.

that this happens repeatedly all over the US shows it is not an accident or a failure to do math.

We need to see this as the repression that it is to resist it and similar softer repressions, or too many people conclude prisons should be more awful and prisoners should be forced to work to pay for it.

Capitalism can't take too many people in any way independent of it, so people on the margins of the economy are incarcerated at far greater expense than meeting basic needs.

Maybe easier to see, for us at least, the same thing happening to unhoused people. We're not allowed to take care of ourselves on abandoned land. Rather than give us $20K each to take care of ourselves governments will spend ten times that for semi-carceral shelters. Whether totally temporary or semi-permanent, the options from the homeless-industrial complex, when offered at all, are all prison-like.

Plus the expense of destroying the homes we do build ourselves.

Startup costs were $6.5M while our camp was asking CPED to lease us their unused land so we could build community with some stability. And a higher % of people in our camp were getting into housing than Avivo has been able to boast about since.
