System engineer from Switzerland. Currently interested in #NixOS, #Emacs, #Python and #metal. In my job I work a lot with #Ansible and at home I’m hosting various services on #RaspberryPi 4s running #NixOS.
How much of a stupid idea is it to use the packages from #nixpkgs and use them on #ubuntu 🤔?
Probably doesn’t make much sense when I have to recreate all the services and such.
After testing a PoC for a few weeks we now officially switch to a #nix based development environment based on #devenv. We’re comming from a #Vagrant based environment. #Ansible will still do the configuration for certain parts but the LAMP stack is provided by #devenv.
Really looking forward to working on this, even though it is a little bit intimidating.
@darth As others said. Learn what you need and continue from there.
I had a phase where I used Emacs, Org and Latex very intensely.
Then I nearly stopped using Emacs entirely and now I’m back for coding and taking notes in org but stopped doing tasks in org.
Emacs can easily adapt to your needs so don’t be afraid of to throw out parts you don’t need anymore.
I must be honest #NixOS is slowly growing on me. But it will take me at least a year to fully grasp it n feel comfortable with it the way I do with #Arch. As a result will not be my daily until then.. #Linux#OpenSource#FOSS
@AngryAnt@XeroLinux@DKMellow I wouldn't throw home-manager and flakes in the same basket. Anyone who is currently a user of a tool like Stow will probably be interested in home-manager.
#Apple desperately trying to sell me up on a new MacBook by sneaking in random bugs, like it suddenly decides over night that connecting a Dell display over USB-C no longer works.
I don't know what quarrel Apple has with #Dell but the two never got along well.
I think it's time to finally switch to the ThinkPad and get over with this.
@louis I have a Dell Precision notebook connected to a Lenovo Thunderbolt docking station. I hope I have found a stable setup now but it was very painful. My Dell Latitude from work only gives you 60Hz when you connect it after it booted. The iPad on the other hand works every single time 🤷♂️. My point is you can have random bugs on the other side as well.
When reading the comment to the latest #Apple announcements related to the #DMA by the #EU, I can't help but be reminded of it again and again.
Apple is just being a dick at this point, and it would be for the good of its users if they would allow third party browsers and apps on all platforms.
If you don't want to use this, fine, but thinking that the EU is doing something bad here is just idiotic.
