So, one lens on the weird direction of the modern Internet is that entities created to route you to cool stuff, e.g. search, social media, have especially in the last 5-10 years been taking an ever larger part of the pie via having giant networks. Google can now control whether a news site lives or dies. Meta can take 99.5% of all ad revenue displayed next to an artist's work and they have no power.

Long-term effect? Damage to the creative class.

neonharbinger,
@neonharbinger@mastodon.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith Not saying this is a conscious conspiracy for most "Powers That Be" (don't think it is), but there are some at the top who wish to control, damage, or even destroy the creative class because it's largely left-leaning or at least makes people question the status quo in a way that puts corporations at risk of their own destruction/breakups.

I've always believed this, but w/ CEOs drooling over the idea of "AI" making creatives a thing of the past, I believe it more now than ever.

my friend teaches creative writing at a private school. he’s now forced to upload a calendar and a detailed syllabus with itemized evaluation points and not deviate from this at all, because the school considers this a contract with the customer (the student). absolute hell.

@lzg To be fair, this could be spun into a perfect writing lesson for the kids! 😂 Because when isn't there some corporate overlord with no creative background dictating form and function like an idiot?

What happened to OpenAI’s long-term AI risk team?

Former team members have either resigned or been absorbed into other research groups.

@arstechnica No need to pretend they care now that they've stacked the DHS' AI Safety and Security Board with their own people to "regulate" themselves.

Google Search now has an option to search the "web," which is not the default anymore.

@arstechnica I've been using DuckDuckGo for a year, and nothing about this news makes me want to go back, lol. DuckDuckGo also now has an OpenAI/Claude "chat" feature as a filter option, which makes me want to drop them, too.

    @lzg She's a psychopath, clearly. Let us not forget that "pro-life" Kristi Noem also believes in forcing 10-year-old rape victims who become pregnant to have the baby (https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/03/politics/kristi-noem-south-dakota-abortion-trigger-ban/index.html). She says, "I don’t believe a tragic situation should be perpetuated by another tragedy." Apparently killing one-year-old puppies is fine, though.

    @arstechnica lol @ her writing about gender inclusivity and her disabilities while using a tool that's stolen from countless women and disabled people to build its datasets.

    "...the actual sentences and paragraphs themselves are not copyrighted and could theoretically be rearranged and republished as a different book."

    Who wants to get ChatGPT to reorganize this text a 1000x and sell all the versions? (Not that anyone wants to read this BS.) For some reason, I think Shupe wouldn't like that.

    @arstechnica Personally, I think I called it. I struggle to believe a guy who worked with OpenAI is now going to regulate OpenAI and co. According to Wiki, he's also on the UK's AI advisory board and involved in an AI startup. He does not appear to care that these organizations have stolen labor, en masse, for profit but rather apocalyptic hypotheticals.

    “It is just over,” journalist @caseynewton told The Post.

    “If you wouldn’t join Gab, or Parler, or Truth Social, there’s no reason you should be on X. I think it’s time for journalists and publishers, in particular, to acknowledge the new reality and to get the heck off that website.”
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/11/19/antisemiticism-interent-elon-musk-israwl-war/

    neonharbinger,
    @neonharbinger@mastodon.social avatar

    @taylorlorenz @caseynewton The medium itself is the problem. All social websites, Mastodon included, are vulnerable to large scale disinformation campaigns, general misinformation, and abuse. By participating on these sites in a professional capacity, journalists help legitimize them, making the dis/misinformation more effective.

    I fear we should treat social media like we treat alcohol: a potential source of entertainment that can be addictive and probably shouldn't mix with most business.
