So if an employee comes to work under the influence of hallucinogens it's "unprofessional" and "a felony" but when the AI used to replace said employee starts hallucinating random nonsense it's "just a quirk of the technology"??

You wear mismatched socks to be cute and quirky

I wear mismatched socks because somehow I keep losing all my socks and can't find matching ones so I'm pretending that it's on purpose and that I'm just trying to be cute and quirky.

We are not the same

Fun fact: EEG equipment is powered using battery packs because if you powered it using wall electricity you'd get these funky artifacts in your readings appearing with a 50hz frequency :neofox_googly_blep:

"Trans people are destroying traditional values!!"
Good. That's the point.
Your "traditional values" suck.

njion,
@njion@bark.lgbt avatar

I don't think the people who say that realize just how flattering it is to hear that we're successfully destroying oppressive norms that have been harming countless generations before us. Like that's awesome! Thanks for letting me know I'm doing a good job! :neofox_happy:

njion,
@njion@bark.lgbt avatar

@thor What do you mean by that? Why would everyone be trans lmao

I'm always so surprised at modern fast charging standards. I mean not too long ago it'd take the whole night to charge a phone to full and now it's like "Oh my phone is kinda low and I have to get going soon. I guess I'll plug it in for like 15 min" and then in that time it somehow charges by like 30% what on earth how

njion, to random
@njion@bark.lgbt avatar

Most of the problems folding phones "solve" could be fixed by simply producing smaller smartphones that come with none of the drawbacks of folding phones. But of course we can't have a simple solution that allows for cheaper phones that use more common materials and don't break down over time. Expensive, over-engineered products that break from just being used and can't easily be repaired are obviously much better! ..For the companies selling them..

njion,
@njion@bark.lgbt avatar

Seriously, we can't keep enthusiastically buying into products that are more harmful to the environment and consumers just because they're ever so slightly more convenient than the alternative. This attitude of convenience over everything else is a large factor in how we ended up with a global climate crisis and a dystopian capitalist system.

You do not need same day delivery. You do not need a gimmick phone that you'll need to replace as soon as the soft plastic screen gets scratched a little too deep. You do not need a home AI assistant that collects data about everything going on in your "smart home".

What you do need is a world in which current and future generations can not only survive but also thrive. I think we can all sacrifice a bit of convenience for that.

Outer Wilds is on a 40% discount on Steam right now!! Go buy it! It's amazing!!

PSA about the Steam client performance:

Turns out that in your Steam library, rare achievements are marked with an animated light effect. This animation somehow takes up an astounding amount of system resources especially on older PCs/laptops.

If you notice that your PC slows to a crawl whenever your steam library is open, you can go to Steam > Settings > Library and then turn on Low Performance Mode. It simply disables a few insignificant animations but the performance gains can be massive. On my old Dell Latitude, the CPU usage goes from >50% to <10% just from changing this one setting!

I have no idea why they put this under "Library" and not "Interface" cause I've been looking for a setting like this for months but I finally found out about this and now you have too!

Holy fuck you should all play Outer Wilds. One of the most brilliant games I've played in a very long time, maybe even ever. I'm blown away. Don't even look up anything about it, you wanna go in completely blind. Just make sure your PC can run it and go play it.

Friendly reminder that if person with ADHD doesn't reply to your messages for a while or forgets about important events because of hyperfixating, it doesn't mean that they don't care or that they're lazy or that they're upset at you or anything of the sort. When we get hyperfixated on something we can spend hours focused exclusively on that one thing entirely losing track of time, sometimes even forgetting about basic bodily needs. It can very much be unhealthy and is often a much bigger problem for us than it is for you. Please be understanding.

Is LaTeX a viable tool for writing university papers, essays and articles?

njion,
@njion@bark.lgbt avatar

@rad It is the defacto standard for articles. I see Rmarkdown mentioned too but that's more so for data analysis using the R programming language. You can't go wrong with LaTeX though.

njion,
@njion@bark.lgbt avatar

@rail_ @rad Yes however the issue is that Rmarkdown is meant to be used with R and that on its own is a whole learning curve. You need to mess with a lot of libraries to get nice graphs working with it. It's mostly meant for data analysis.

People who think that mechanical watches are these miracles of engineering that are full of "soul" (whatever that means) and are therefore superior to the "simple, stupid, 'soulless' quartz watches" are honestly just snobs who really like to brag about their needlessly expensive trinkets and don't know anything about how genius the engineering behind quartz watches really is. They are incredible inventions that literally make the world tick.

Edit: this isn't to say that if you have a mechanical watch you're an ignorant snob. They are pretty neat and I can appreciate the technology behind them as well and of course you're allowed to like whatever you want. I just really dislike the attitude of treating mechanical as somehow intrinsically superior that some people have. It tends to be all about them being premium, expensive and for rich people which is just.. well.. snobby.

njion,
@njion@bark.lgbt avatar

Not only are quartz watches faaar more accurate than mechanical ones, they are also more resistant to physical damage, can last decades without any kind of maintenance, they're cheaper and easier to produce and the tech behind them is super interesting once you actually know how it works.

We're literally keeping time using tiny crystals perfectly tuned to vibrate at tens of thousands times per second, always at frequencies that are powers of two, and then using the small currents they generate to update a segmented display made of liquid crystals exactly once per second.

All that while using so little electricity that a single button cell battery can power it for over a decade. And if we wanna be even more ecological, we can even use solar panels hidden within the face of the watch to keep its battery charged practically indefinitely.

We can even have quartz watches that automatically sync to atomic clocks over radio!! How is this "simple and soulless"?? It's basically magic!
