Just 13 short years after inviting candidates over to the Masala Co-op for tea and cakes to discuss repealing occupancy limits that discriminate against unrelated people, and 28 years after Cedar Barstow got busted for living in an intentional community in her own home and was sentenced to community service, which she used to help found the Boulder Housing Coalition.

@ZaneSelvans my first intro to Boulder politics was seeing the co-ops come out in force to end these unjust laws. Thank you for your leadership in that.

In court, Trump dozed, a spectacle to see,
Yet "Sleepy Joe" was Trump's taunting decree,
The irony is rich, as he now dozes deep,
Proving himself the one who cannot keep.

following up on with @hrheingold @ntnsndr @ethanz ...

I'm working with a group of municipal boards to experiment with modern multi-channel threaded communications (currently Slack, but we're open-minded)

One sticking point: how to break the mindset where ideas/discussion only flows during, or leading up to, synchronous calls.

In a Robert's Rules Board Meeting, you have the Propose-Discuss-Vote-Act sequence. I'd expect people to follow that same groove online, but, yet...

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@JonnyGarf @hrheingold @ethanz several communities I'm part of actually treat online votes as the only canonical ones, since they allow people to participate who couldn't attend the live one. Live meetings are more for deliberation and context.

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@JonnyGarf i don't really believe in the "internet native." Tons of my students have trouble with once-basic ways of using the internet that happen to be different from what they are familiar with.

But you can see a case study here: https://wiki.social.coop/wiki/How_to_Make_the_Fediverse_Your_Own

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@JonnyGarf oh, yes, I see. Lots of corporations now (and my union) use digital ballots for decision-making. They do many things offline but have opted to make key decisions online for accessibility.

Another example is the Colorado Solidarity Fund, an investment club that meets regularly but holds votes on Loomio.

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@mrcompletely @JonnyGarf that's possible, but there are so many different modes of being online. Just like the claim to be "cosmopolitan," any pretense to universality seems fraught.

Just saw this—my interview with the great theorist and journalist of technology Mike Masnick is up and out on the Techdirt Podcast: https://www.techdirt.com/2024/04/09/techdirt-podcast-episode-386-democratic-design-for-online-spaces/

I hugely admire Mike's grounded thinking on protocols and decentralization. This was a really fun conversation.

@BrianJopek As a college teacher, I beg beg beg all high school teachers, please ban all screens in class so by the time they get to me doing so doesn't feel like an authoritarian imposition.

The Vatican has just reaffirmed its hostility toward so-called "gender ideology." I recently wrote in the magazine of the pope's Jesuit order that this posture is a dangerous failure of imagination: https://www.americamagazine.org/faith/2023/11/16/gender-ideology-catholic-246515

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@hazelnot Because the church is not a monolith 🤓

ntnsndr,
@ntnsndr@social.coop avatar

@hazelnot No, not really. The pope is one bishop among others (with an historically important seat). That office helps serve the purpose of unity. But subsidiarity is also a vitally important part of how the church works: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subsidiarity_(Catholicism)
