Am I the only one who thinks it is funny that when you go get a file from certain official Ohio departments, the #CDN URL is Dam.Assets.Ohio.Gov?😂

I can see calling Ohio HelpDesk going this way,

Ohio Helpdesk's minimum wage worker, "Thanks for calling the State of #Ohio, how can I help you."

Me, "Yes, I tried to download payment schedules but got a 404 file not found error at the dam assets

Ohio Helpdesk, "Sir, I know it can be frustrating. If you can give me more info, I'll look into this"

Selfhosted instance.

I am thinking of breaking and to a separate server instead of increasing my current VPS resources.

I'll have two servers. My main, which will run Mastodon, and another that will have Postgres and ElasticSearch on it.

Will I benefit by doing this or should I just move ElasticSearch to its own server? What is the minimum CPU/ram I can get for the second server & what should I get?

Or, other thoughts welcomed.

Ohio parents receive $4 million dollar hospital bill after delivering quadruplets'

They all needed to be admitted to the NICU and each of her four babies ended up staying between 64 days and 147 days which totaled over $4 million, for which all of it was covered by #Ohio #Medicaid

I wonder what the actual amount the hospital got was, because the bills sent to patients' vs Medicaid payment max is greatly inflated. My guess, $250-500K.

Thank goodness Medicaid stepped in

April pending home sales hit four-year low as rates and prices soar https://www.axios.com/2024/05/31/housing-market-home-sales-april-2024

paul,
@paul@oldfriends.live avatar

@noondlyt

Prices are wild. Our town has about 8 homes for sale in total, mostly bank owned.

There's literally one house (it's bank owned foreclosure) for sale on my street and it is listed three times what it was a few years ago, well over what it should be.

What gets me is, it is a small, block house that could be built identically on the identical empty lot next to it that is for sale at a reasonable price for a third of the asking price of this house.

why does the preload flag not work for HSTS for ?

is Mastodon doing something else, overriding this config?

add_header Strict-Transport-Security "max-age=63072000; includeSubDomains; preload";

paul,
@paul@oldfriends.live avatar

@yawnbox
Unless I am misunderstanding the issue,

Powershell, command 'Invoke-WebRequest -Uri https://disobey.net/ -MaximumRedirection 0 | Select-Object -ExpandProperty Headers'

is returning "Strict-Transport-Security max-age=63072000; includeSubDomains"

Maybe a browse,r or extension on a browser, is overriding HSTS preload?

Note, I've never been directly to your site, so there is nothing preloaded in my system that is cached.

paul,

@Ric The reports you are getting about people on other instances is probably because of the recent, I forget when, changes that let reports get forwarded to the instances of everyone who interacted with a post that is getting reported.

I posted earlier that around 5pm, my little self-hosted instance was getting flooded with jobs because of Federation, starting around 5pm.

I normally process 350,000 jobs per day, but in the last 24 hours, it is over 450,000 jobs.

Jobs dropped off a few hours ago, back to normal. lol

My money is on Trumpgasm or drunk from celebration and passed out on the floor somewhere. 😂

This isn't hyperbole. Vote out the GOP in STATE races

The GOP is so close to be able to call an Article V Constitutional Convention at the state level & rewrite the entire damn thing, authored by the Federalist Society, & there will be nothing anyone can do

Do you really want these insane laws they're passing in red states to be hard coded in the US Constitution?

Do you really want the US billionaire oligarchs to buy a constitution they are happy with?

They just need 34. Almost there. #USPol

Considering States actively considering the Convention of States Resolution with legislation in 2024, they might just make it before the end of the year.

Those states are, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, Wyoming

Last year, Montana shot it down by just one vote.

I really like old idioms/phrases that have a basis in something from a bygone era....

Bite the bullet
Meaning: To accept something difficult or unpleasant

Origin: In the olden days, when doctors were short on anesthesia or time during a battle, they would ask the patient to bite down on a bullet to distract from the pain. The first recorded use of the phrase was in 1891 in The Light that Failed.

Break the ice
Meaning: To break off a conflict or commence a friendship.

Origin: Back when road transportation was not developed, ships would be the only transportation and means of trade. At times, the ships would get stuck during the winter because of ice formation. The receiving country would send small ships to “break the ice” to clear a way for the trade ships. This gesture showed affiliation and understanding between two territories.

Butter someone up
Meaning: To impress someone with flattery

Origin: This was a customary religious act in ancient India. The devout would throw butter balls at the statues of their gods to seek favor and forgiveness.

Mad as a hatter
Meaning: To be completely crazy

Origin: No, you didn’t already know this one, because it didn’t originate from Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Its origins date from the 17th and 18th centuries — well before Lewis Caroll’s book was published. In 17th century France, poisoning occurred among hat makers who used mercury for the hat felt. The “Mad Hatter Disease” was marked by shyness, irritability, and tremors that would make the person appear “mad.”

Cat got your tongue?
Meaning: Asked to a person who is at loss of words

Origin: The English Navy used to use a whip called “Cat-o’-nine-tails” for flogging. The pain was so severe that it caused the victim to stay quiet for a long time. Another possible source could be from ancient Egypt, where liars’ and blasphemers’ tongues were cut out and fed to the cats. (What a treat for the cats!)

Barking up the wrong tree
Meaning: To have misguided thoughts about an event or situation, a false lead

Origin: This refers to hunting dogs that may have chased their prey up a tree. The dogs bark, assuming that the prey is still in the tree, when the prey is no longer there.

Turn a blind eye
Meaning: To ignore situations, facts, or reality

Origin: The British Naval hero, Admiral Horatio Nelson, had one blind eye. Once when the British forces signaled for him to stop attacking a fleet of Danish ships, he held up a telescope to his blind eye and said, “I do not see the signal.” He attacked, nevertheless, and was victorious.

Bury the hatchet
Meaning: To stop a conflict and make peace

Origins: This one dates back to the early times North America when the Puritans were in conflict with the Native Americans. When negotiating peace, the Native Americans would bury all their hatchets, knives, clubs, and tomahawks. Weapons were literally buried and made inaccessible.

Caught red-handed
Meaning: To be caught in the act of doing something wrong

Origin: This originates from an old English law that ordered any person to be punished for butchering an animal that wasn’t his own. The only way the person could be convicted is if he was caught with the animal’s blood still on his hands.

Give a cold shoulder
Meaning: Being unwelcoming or antisocial toward someone

Origin: The first recorded use of this phrase dates back to the early 1800s. It refers to an old custom of giving an unwelcome guest a cold piece of meat from the shoulder of mutton, pork, or beef chop, as opposed to a welcome guest receiving a warm serving. This was a polite way to communicate, “You may leave, now.”

Go the whole nine yards
Meaning: To try your best at something

Origin: During World War II, the fighter pilots were equipped with nine yards of ammunition. When they ran out, it meant that they had tried their best at fighting off the target with the entirety of their ammunition.

Let one’s hair down
Meaning: To relax or be at ease

Origin: In public, the aristocratic women of medieval times were obliged to appear in elegant hair-dos that were usually pulled up. The only time they would “let their hair down” was when they came home and relaxed.

Rub the wrong way
Meaning: To bother or annoy someone

Origin: Early Americans, during the colonial times, would ask their servants to rub their oak floorboards “the right way”. The wrong way (not wiping them with dry fabric after wet fabric) would cause streaks to form and ruin it, leaving the homeowner annoyed. Alternatively, it could have derived from rubbing a cat’s fur the “wrong way,” which annoys them.

As of this post, there are multiple radar indicated 's in and around Bowling Green, (red triangle)

A TVS is a signature, or indication, of a potential . It is basically an indication of strong wind shear (or changing wind direction) in a very small area associated with potential tornadic circulation within a thunderstorm. A TVS is no guarantee a tornado will form, but definitely a strong indication that one may soon develop, or already has.

We're right now hearing thunder from that front in #AppalachianOhio

We're on guard and in the basement, after seeing the front that was coming our way.

Looks like just a reg thunderstorm, though, but with my mobility, we're not taking chances. #SevereWx #OHwx
