until they’re asking for genuine help (which starts with help getting clean), any attempt to help would be mostly enabling, i think. I would start distancing myself from this guy, just so I don’t have to watch them kill themselves. but I would let them know what I was doing and why at the same time. myself and a group of friends (all in recovery ourselves) cut ties with a really close friend when he relapsed and refused to go to rehab. in our case, that was the final straw he needed to get help again, and now he’s been sober for like 10 years. I can’t guarantee it’ll go well, he’s clearly self-destructive, but I don’t enjoy watching it

Can somebody explain why game makers don't start their own companies together?

It seems like every other week a game studio is massively laying off employees; sometimes after years of development. What I’m reading is that it’s a quick way to lower expenses and pad the investors’ pockets, flooding the market with developers and reducing their value, to then hire them back a few months later at lower...

it takes time for a company to become profitable. the intentionally make sure to pay us so little we never have any run out

when they buried the founder of mormonism, Joseph Smith, they filled his coffin with sandbags. he was actually dead though

that was fueled mostly by the fact that the government investigated the idea. people take it to mean that means they saw enough evidence to believe it, but it was probably an ass-covering for a rumor

it was never about defeating nazism. if Hitler had stayed in germany, the world would have let him do all of his things

When was the last time you answered a Lemmy or Reddit post/thread that was more than five months old?

I think there should be some incentive for that, like make those kinds of comments a spotlight or something. Maybe make a community called “late replies” that showcases the best such replies, or have a rule saying they grant free karma (in Reddit’s case).

I watched a guy use Occam’s razor to kill Schrodinger’s cat and then he just fed it to Pavlov’s dogs. he said the god particle told him to do it

I’ve lately gotten into prunes. didn’t like them as a kid, but they’re fucking delicious and do wonderful things for my bowels

it does seem like a major plot point to bring up so far into the story, I think I remember feeling that way a bit the first time I read it. but it also promises to be absolutely fascinating, and makes you go back and see things with a whole new lens.

i think it was a way of showing that for all his savvy, Tywin could still have a political blind spot based entirely on avarice for something

this is one of the few shows where it’s become impossible for me to divide the book and show characters in my head.

it’s weird not to have strangers insisting that they can base their arguments on hallucinations that they’ve had.
