There are two kinds of driver behavior regarding cyclists: Always yield to them no matter who has the right of way, and attempted murder. There is no middle ground where we just follow rules of the road

@chris__martin The intentions could not be more different and yet neither are helping 😩

@Alice He‘s called “Lord Helmchen” in German – Lord Little Helmet. Maybe knowing this makes you feel better because there are even larger helmets out there!

After my deep dive into early 90s female-led grunge/post-grunge/jangle indie/[add other genres here] yesterday, triggered by Breeders which featured the Deal sisters - please have a recommendation from me!

Alisha's Attic (sisters Shelly and Karen Poole) came later in 1996 - I don't know their second 1998 album at all, but I LOVED this one, "Alisha Rules the World":

@sarajw Never heard of them, but they sound good! I think I could have placed them in the right decade without knowing them – solid mid-90s tunes 😅

You’re a Cyclist Who Was Just Struck by a Car Driver. Here’s Why It Was Your Fault - McSweeney’s Internet Tendency https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/youre-a-cyclist-who-was-just-struck-by-a-car-driver-heres-why-it-was-your-fault

@sarajw Yup, so many horrible anecdotes like this, sorry to hear this 😢A very similar thing happened to my mom. And I started to return home at 3pm during winter because it’s just way too dangerous in the dark, even with a blinking vest and lots of glow-things – gave me many nightmares. It’s why I like this article so much: so many ways cyclists get blamed, but what would really help is proper infrastructure …

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@sarajw Small steps forward are steps forward ✊ We have a legal revision soon where it's up for discussion whether cyclists can use the sidewalk. Sounds like a good idea until you think about it: no need to build proper infrastructure and more hate from pedestrians (rightfully so). I’m not enthusiastic … Also, law needs to be put into practice: We've had so many (6, I think?) popular votes in Zürich for more bike infra in the last 40 years and nothing ever happened – under left governments 😡

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@sarajw From that incident yes, thanks 🤗 But she has trouble walking since a couple of years because a cyclist ran into her from behind (they were both cycling in the same direction). Won't give up the bike, though, which I applaud. But so many more people would ride bikes if it just weren't so scary …

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@sarajw Two things I like about that: physically separated from cars, and visually separate from pedestrians. Not ideal, but better than what Zürich tried for many years: mixing bikes and pedestrians. Just put a bike and a pedestrian in a heart and write “respect each other” and all will be good – not. That particular situation here was my daily nightmare: pedestrians in both directions, bikes overtaking, dogs, joggers, kids, strollers, slow, fast, ugh.

People like to shit on React, and with good reason. But sometimes it feels like people forget that a lot of us get paid to write React, whether we like it or not. When working on a massive React codebase it absolutely doesn’t make sense to migrate to a new framework unless you can justify the time, effort and expense. So all these posts/blogs I’ve seen that suggest that developers are somehow making mistakes or ignorant for still using React - a lot of us don’t have a choice.

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@sarajw @sophie I really like your approach to push for the important outcomes! You don‘t even have to bring the solutions: making people aware of where things can break or can be made in a more web-way and encourage them to accomodate a11y needs sounds like a very important – actionable! –perspective you can bring to the team, junior or not.

Just given away the last (apart from some kept for sentimental reasons) of the baby/toddler clothes that the kids grew out of.

After spending tons of energy sorting it out for a school flea market where there were a lot more sellers than buyers, I was pretty frustrated. Thankfully Kleinanzeigen (German Craigslist/Gumtree thing) has been a winner.

A few people came to pick out things they liked best, and now the rest has gone to midwives' supplies, to give to new parents who can't afford much.

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@sarajw It feels so good to clean out these things, I think. We cleaned our kid‘s room this summer as a whole-fanily activity and I think it helped all of us move on and accept that some phases of her young life have definitely passed – and focus on who she is now!

Flashback to that time when I was in a hotel and my key wouldn’t work so I started knocking on the door only to realize I was on the wrong floor knocking on some random man’s door at 7am.

Is there some kind of dribbble/behance equivalent portfolio platform for interface designers to show non-visual design or non-graphic design oriented work?

With projects & essays like these on interface exploration?

https://a9.io/glue-comic/

Where folks come up with novel UI metaphors, conventions, design concepts, patterns, affordances & write extensively on it?

Where they can experiment and showcase prototypes of novel UI concepts, patterns, conventions, paradigms supplemented with essays

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@impactology Which is why I'm glad this was part of our IxD curriculum. Even though many aspects of this large field require depth of knowledge, I think it's important to keep a breadth of knowledge as well, lest we reduce ourselves to tunnel vision and create shiny stuff that doesn't work because it doesn't respect our full human condition.

Modern Apple UIs are an example of that: all the interdisciplinary knowledge has been lost and their designers forgot where it came from and why …

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar
peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@impactology See, one more thread that is very credential-ly :) One of the reasons I admire people like Bret Victor is that they can build the bridges between history and theory and praxis and show us how things could be done – this is such a difficult feat to do! But that's not sustainable, so the way forward must be interdisciplinary, imo. Which also means that our field must bring new research questions to the humanities … If only we had it as easy as Chemistry ;P https://xkcd.com/2552/

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@impactology Ooh, that sounds interesting, good luck!!
