Only now I realize that I can’t repost something and add a comment here. Why? It seems so limiting! Did I miss something?

@ebertini @seblammers There was resistance against it, but it‘s planned now. Direly needed! https://joinmastodon.org/roadmap

Gosh is it annoying if you can’t disconnect the battery properly without risking further damage …

My VPN is up for renewal. So what are folks using? I currently use Tunnelbear - easy to use, convenient, and excruciating bear puns. But they’ve now been bought by McAfee.

So, what’s out there? Looking for secure networking on the road (hotel & other public wifi), and preferably true privacy (no logs/no tracking). On my radar are Proton and Mullvad. Or roll my own.

Thoughts?

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@thirstybear I switched to Mullvad from Tunnelbear and am really happy with it. It’s a breath of fresh air in today’s surveillance climate that they don’t even have an email address on record, just a random user ID.

Today’s the day: Happy first to me! 🥳

It was a real effort to build up this cozy new corner over here and I had to leave so many incredible people behind on good old Twitter, but it was so obvious already then that I could not be part of Musk’s vision. And oh my am I glad I left!

In this year I got to know a whole lot of new people and feel settled here: I love what you all put on my feed every day and I find the idea of super exciting. Good times ahead!

My (current instance) is today!

A year ago I found my way onto the new front-end.social and instantly felt at home. I'm very happy to be here :)

I started on mastodon.social like most people. I first made an account in late April 2022 when Musk's twitter deal was first struck.

It was confusing! I'd actually intended to join mstdn.social as I had a couple of contacts there already, but got it wrong!

I started regularly using Mastodon after the twitter migration of Nov 2022.

@sarajw Happy birthday! Mine‘s coming up very soon – what a year 😅

I was just having a conversation with my mother about the usual "climate protests should target government or companies, not normal people" opinion, which is a stance I honestly sympathise with and used to hold myself - but I think we're too far gone for that. They need to disrupt everyone to have an impact, and I support them.

Look at the suffragettes - I feel like society has not remembered how violent they needed to be - decades of peaceful protest hadn't worked:

@sarajw I have similar discussions with my dad and they put me in the situation where I’m like «I’ve learned so much since my 20s, I’m sure he’s learned much since his 40s and I should listen to his intuition».

But then, parameters have changes sooo much since and I just don’t think (some of) his experiences are valid anymore. E.g. I agree that political compromise is important, but if the right constantly shifts the window, compromise doesn’t work anymore and resistance is necessary.

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@sarajw Very on point, it’s the scale and the brutal existential impact that is so hard to grasp. Especially when they have lived through many crises before and it always turned out well; the ozone layer comes to mind, where the whole world banded together to solve the problem. Could we solve that in today’s environment? I doubt it …

My friend had a bike accident: turns out his brakes were mounted in an unusual way where the right hand brakes the front wheel. Unlike every other bike I know – why would they do that?? 🤔

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@sarajw @hannesfritz Aha, this is indeed a thing then? Bakfiets isn't really UK, so that’s confusing. After his accident my friend’s now having the sides changed, and that would be the very first thing I’d do too – muscle memory is too strong, as demonstrated by Hannes 😅

50 years ago today one of my all time favourite albums was released: Head Hunters.

I listened to this for hours as a child when I discovered it in my dad’s LP collection. And when I recently put it on for the 9yo to hear, we both danced as if there was no tomorrow.

Here’s to a visionary band and a time when it was a-ok when a song lasted for 10 or 15 minutes even. 🧡

What’s your favourite ? Looking to refresh my playlist…

(My top 3 albums:

peter, (edited )
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@elduvelle
• Horses by Patti Smith
• Live in the Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt
• Bridget Jones' Diary (I know!)
• The 2nd Law by Muse
• Random Access Memories by Daft Punk (a match!)
• Parallel Lines by Blondie
• The Suburbs by Arcade Fire (edited to add, how could I forget that one?!)

I think they work for me because I've listened to them a hundred times each …

For all the various reasons. All of them.

So so so tired, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually too I guess. Oof.

@sarajw So sorry to hear 😢 This happened to me last year and I was completely AFK for three weeks. I thought a day or two might do it, but it was just blank stares at the computer. So if you're not feeling well on Monday, I recommend to get a doctor’s note and take a fully guilt-free break! My colleagues were very supportive when I talked to them, maybe yours are as well? I couldn't even read stuff anymore, so I learned a song on the kid's guitar – that helped me heal somewhat …

Ok. My default mobile Mastodon app is now @phanpy 🐽 🎉

It has a few little bugs or issues that I'll write up some day (bet @cheeaun will love me for those ahaha), but otherwise I really like the way it does the main feed and posting views, esp for adding alt text to images.

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@sarajw @phanpy Very cool, I love that idea! I could imagine myself assigning certain high-boost accounts to be displayed like that while leaving boosts of others in the normal timeline. Makes me excited for Mastodon all over again, because innovation is possible in this way.

This is a beautiful interaction design masterclass on mobile text editing by @scottjenson.

https://jenson.org/text/

  1. Follow your hunch that, even though no one complains too loudly, something could be improved
  2. Observe people to validate your hunch
  3. Describe the problem in detail to understand its nature
  4. Explore alternative solutions through experimentation and simplification using your detailed problem statement as guidance
  5. Create a prototype, test it, iterate, and share

Programmable keyboards with free and open firmware are not just geek toys but accessibility tools.

I was just able to create a new layer in Vial that moves the arrow keys to the left side of the keyboard and maps them to s/z/x/c to make them easier to use in some keyboard shortcuts after breaking my right hand.

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@aral Something to try also: while keeping space pressed, flip the keyboard to write one handedly. This worked surprisingly well for me when it was necessary! It was amazing to see how the brain can adapt.

An example that might be easier to achieve with your hardware: https://apps.apple.com/ch/app/keyb-the-one-handed-keyboard/id1588579580?mt=12

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@aral Yeah, if it clicks, it clicks, and if it doesn't there's other things to try :) The main thing I took away from all this was to stay humble and really understand that we're all just temporarily abled, as Cindy Li put it.

I hate that its actively scary to talk about this stuff, for fear of saying the wrong thing.

I hate that Palestinians are increasingly kettled into smaller lands, and I also hate that under this pressure they retaliate against Israeli civilians.

That Israeli civilians are encouraged to make their homes in Palestinian lands sucks. That they get attacked after going along with this encouragement sucks.

peter,

@sarajw It‘s an example for me of the huge gap between those in power playing their power games vs. the people who have to live through it. It just is so immensely unfair. 😢

We've been on a wonderful childhood memory trip with our kids lately. We first read Ronia, the Robber's Daughter together, then saw the plays at Astrid Lindgren's World and watched the old movie from 1984 yesterday. This story has magical powers. Not all of our childhood books and movies work for our kids. We can feel it within the first few minutes if they are captivated or not. But Ronia is on another level. 💚

peter,
