Do you ever think that it's weird that we are symmetrical?

I have a theory that is why we reduce everything to a binary or dialectic. We are two pieces that make up a whole. And further the two pieces are opposite.

It's so ingrained in us. It's who we are so it's also where our abstraction mechanism bottoms out.

"The brutal murder of Tyre Nichols by five Black Memphis police officers should be enough to implode the fantasy that identity politics and diversity will solve the social, economic and political decay that besets the United States. Not only are the former officers Black, but the city’s police department is headed by Cerelyn Davis, a Black woman. None of this helped Nichols, another victim of a modern-day police lynching."

@AnthonyJK @strypey I read that differently than you did.

This made me think of how I've read in Jane McAlevy's books that in union solidarity you have to focus on the fight and your allies in that fight.

Which means in union issues specifically you can't "turn away" people based on political view. You can't get to 90% or whatever majority you need by excluding people.

"Industrial Farming Has Killed Billions of Birds"

🤬 🤬 🤬 🤬

Worldwide, 49% of all wild bird species are in steep decline.

BirdLife International’s authoritative report, State of the World’s Birds 2022, estimates that there are now nearly three billion fewer wild birds in Canada and the U.S. than a few decades ago, and about 600 million fewer in the European Union.

The single biggest cause of bird declines is chemical-intensive farming. Some birds are killed by pesticides or herbicides, but the most important impacts are loss of food, especially insects and other invertebrates that most bird species depend on, and the spread of fertilizer-intensive monocultures that eliminate shelter and nesting areas. Insect-eating populations declined more than any others.

In short, the collapse of farmland bird populations is closely related to the Insect Apocalypse in the Anthropocene. The mass slaughter of insects is killing masses of birds.

You had (thanks) posted this in response to that Sussman video:

"Reminded me of - but completely ignores his angle - Graeber's essay on the death of the academy in the 1970s, and the hypocracy of the postmoderns."

I am a new Graeber fan and can't find that. Is it called something else? Any suggestions where to read it?

This is amazing. Rick Astley has taken it on himself to start covering The Smiths songs because Morrissey is such an unholy piece of shit, and not only is it not bad it's good and also wholesome.

This is great because Morrissey let a lot of people down. And Rick Astley, well, he would never . . .

cp -r ../my-cur /some/where/else

Like maybe it will take me with it. Does it duplicate me?
Is it like the transporter thought experiment where every time someone is transported in Star Trek, the original is copied and then destroyed?

I prefer permissive licenses like the ISC.

Well actually I prefer no licenses.

Licenses is a leaky abstraction.

I am NOT a (US style) libertarian!

I would be fooling myself if I thought that my opinions aren't because I really like OpenBSD and it's sub projects.

@svetlyak40wt I don't understand what you are asking. My quick take is if you are going to make a statement with your license choice, then the boldest thing to do is leave it off.

@0x00string the status quo is evil. I am seeing this pattern more and more. Bad actors may be the "spark" of something bad, but when people normalize it that is where the real evil damage happens.

an angry white guy with a gun is just John Wayne.

an anarchist requires too much self reflection and critical thought. so it is the thing shunned.

    it's embarrassing

and it's the guys with guns that have the chip on their shoulder. so they are looking for trouble.

the last guy i saw had a "faith over fear" sweatshirt.

like it twists my brain into knots. you need to proclaim your lack of fear on some edgy sweatshirt...
    how scared are you?
    what are you scared of?
and you have a gun!, now we are all scared of YOU because you are scared.

I think the biggest mistake done by Dr Stallman was choosing Linux as the kernel for the GNU operating system.

And we are facing the consequences of that mistake to this very day.

@screwtape @colinsmatt11 @mapcar I'll do the cheet sheet for Alpine on VMM this weekend.

IDK about GNU Hurd, it's worth trying.

I couldn't get FreeBSD or Slackware to work, but I do have Alpine, OpenBSD and Void working.

IIRC a lot depended on if the installer needed a console or vga. (VMM doesn't give you vga.) (there is a slow workaround with install/setup the image first in qemu)
    (qemu has vga))

Also it seems OpenBSD has released some stuff around VMM so maybe it's worth trying again.

@0x00string I have been seeing this on both sides for a while now. I have had relatively high paying tech jobs, and then more working class jobs.

I saw a pattern where IT people think they are above unions. And then its too late.
Especially younger people making decent money out of college. Can be insufferably elitist w/o even realizing it. [0]

It's like the "first they come for ..." line.

    It was amazing.
Lots of the audience were ppl active in union struggles worldwide, and workshopped their actual problems.

I was involved with the VT prog party and the VT AFLCIO until I got my latest job and had no time. prog politics and unions is a good mix.

I have minimal code that implements some simple function in C can calls it from guile.

But I think I did the actual call to the wrapped C code in a repl so it doesn't show up in that repo.

Been thinking about this whole business and the way it seems to stand in the way of meaningful solutions, proper mitigation and often the same applies to all the "fixes" that get sort of watered down under our current policy. Been thinking about the "why".

After understanding that our current regulations all favor economic growth and free competition as the very first principle, there can be no "fixing the things" under this model.

Reading your thoughts brings me to think this:

Capitalism is in one sense putting the representation of a thing over the thing itself.

A billionaire only sees the representations of most of its possessions.

Money is by definition the representation of a thing.

Under capitalism the appearance of choice is the same as choice, because capitalism doesn't know the difference. Can't know the difference, because "the bottom line" is a number ...
    which represents something.
