Having a Spring Drive one and a Quartz one in my collection already, it is only natural that my 3rd #GrandSeiko would be a Hi-beats automatic. When I saw the radial snowy dial, the 44GS case and the blue GMT hand, I knew that the SBGJ201 aka “Mt Iwate” was the one. It’s not the first watch that can handle timezones in my collection but definitely the first regular GMT. #watches #watchesofmastodon

I just bought my 2nd . Will talk about it and explain the choices I made once I actually get my hands on the box. The only thing I will tease is that this reference is very plain and simple, and probably not one I would have considered 3 months ago before I had owned the very fancy SBGA259/Golden Snowflake.

I don’t know how controversial my opinion is but I find the modern Air King extremely unappealing. It has lost a lot of the traits from the original looking more like a weird downgraded mix between an Explorer and a Milgauss. And it doesn’t even live up to its name anymore as its design is inspired by a car and has almost nothing to do with airplanes/pilots.

Older Air-King

I got an opportunity to get a #Cartier Tank for an alright price, but it is the Americaine. Not my favorite. Still thinking about it but will likely pass... #watches #watchesofmastodon

I recently went through a full power reserve run of my mechanical watches to check which one might need service. They all kept time alright but unsurprisingly the 2 older Rolex are not in good shape endurance-wise. Everything else actually exceeded specs so it’s great to know that they are fine. The Grand Seiko lasted for 75h (vs 72h on paper), surprisingly the Poljot 65h (vs 48h), the Datejust 51h (vs 42h), the Knot 45h (vs 40h).

Recent addition to my collection: Two-tone Datejust 36mm reference 16013 with jubilee bracelet. This one has 2 slightly unusual features:

  • it still has its service stickers with reference on the back
  • it has the uncommon Buckley dial and even more uncommon in cream color since most Buckley dials are usually white or blue. The irony is that it likely looks less flashy to regular people but probably stands out more in the eyes of collectors 😅

I am too tired to write about it now but let’s say I recently secured something vintage.

I am generally not a fan of . It may sound funny since all high-end are luxury, but Rolex is in its own league when it comes to being overpriced. I also don’t like how the brand treats their customers with wait-list and service. And most of their models are too gaudy to my tastes. With that said, there are a few exceptions and one of them is the Speedking 6430, predecessor to old Air-king. Manual wind, no hacking, tiny (31mm), simple with cream dial

Ever since the update to iOS17, I was unable to use my watch due to the sideloaded Pebble app constantly crashing badly. But I recently found out that iMazing could help restore the original IPA which is supposed to be a bit less broken than sideloaded. It seems to be indeed the case. Now I can at least load and manage apps/watchfaces. This is giving me more confidence that I can get back to using regular and transition away from the Watch by using the Pebble time.

I know it is a bit unusual but I own a #GrandSeiko, a #Citizen and a #Casio watch yet I don’t have any #Seiko. I am going to fix that soon as I am missing a field watch in my #watches collection. Hint: I went very cheap as I intend for it to be my beater 😁. #watchesofmastodon

The joy of 😅. The Citizen E650 synced with the atomic clock tower during the night so its time was correct in the morning. The Casio only required to turn on DST so it was painless. Except for the Apple Watch obviously, everything else needed to be adjusted manually though.

From what I understand when I was reading how the years are set up when done manually, the perpetual calendar of the E650 seems to be working by blocks of 4 years (n -> n+3) for leap years. As expected it is handling today fine. I probably won’t be around when it may be wrong in the year 2100 😅.

It looks like I am already on my way to get a for my collection. Instead of going for the SBGA211 aka Snowflake, I’ll be getting the SBGA259 aka Golden Snowflake 😁

I am definitely adding a at some point in my collection. The only question is which model as I probably want to limit myself considering their price 😅

I stopped wearing regular watches in favor of smartwatches 10 years ago starting with Pebbles then Apple Watches. But the reignited my interest in regular watches so much so that I started double-wristing over there. It was too convenient to have notifications, map, music, Apple Pay and a Suica pass at all time on my right wrist. Maybe I will keep doing that here 😅
