I’m sitting in the family room with my two teens. One is doing schoolwork and the other is reading a book. Neither are on their phone.

What in the name of everything holy is going on ?!?!? 🙀

My four day weekend has begun. I did try to have a nap, but got distracted by doom scrolling. Now it's time to crawl out of bed and cook something for dinner... Just as soon as I decide what...

Was challenged not to swear during a meeting. And a colleague goes and asks me about opt in Vs opt out with data gathering.

Amazingly I managed to not swear. But it was touch and go.

My package I was expecting last week finally arrived. In a sealed bag with a letter from Postnl apologising for damage to the package. Fortunately the contents seem unharmed.

grrr. Got a second flat tyre on the way home too. There's so much broken glass out there. Not impressed. Was only about 1km from home, so walked home. Will fix it this evening.

Left home, got on bike, discovered rear tyre was flat. Swapped tube as fast as I could and got to work a bit late.

Reminded of this feature of Roman architecture, and 1700s European milk parlour or cheese house architecture that I vaguely recall and am too tired to currently re-look into: The Roman villas would have an open air room inside the walls of the house, shaded by overhanging roofs, and there would also be pools of water. The combination of circulation, shade and water evaporation would keep it one of the coolest rooms in the building.
(Vague recollections, please link a good article if handy!)

@sinituulia @Dangerous_beans wind tower.

We need to bring back more of this vernacular architecture that works with the conditions around us. Rather than buildings just plonked down wherever.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@Dangerous_beans @sinituulia even here in the wet north we should be able to heat a home with a tea light, and it should need no active cooling...

We have the technology to do this. It's just not evenly distributed.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@sewblue @sinituulia there's a pair of buildings on my street, they are mirrors of each other. The road runs east/west, this means on one building the main living space faces South and can take advantage of passive solar gain in winter, and boils in summer. Across the road. The same room is cold in winter, but doesn't get as warm in the summer. It feels like a massive design oversight to have built like this. Also the south facing living space would benefit greatly from a brised soliel...

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@sewblue @sinituulia it was interesting listening to an episode of 99% invisible about shade in LA, and how the original city layout was 45° off north/south. So that every building gets some shade. The same as how Cerdà designed Eixample in Barcelona also orientated 45° so as to take advantage of the position of the sun/shade. I think a lot of modern architecture has forgotten the importance of building to take account of the sun. Passive solar gain, shading, etc...

The local places are out of the blade steel I like, but there's a place in the US that stocks it. Shipping is a pain in the arse, but it's flat rate so it becomes reasonable if i order a few meters...

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@Dangerous_beans which steel do you like to use? I'm currently using O1 (1.2510) cos it's easy to heat treat.

Dunno why everyone is recommending going to Linux to avoid the AI enshittification of Mac and Windows. Surely if you're gonna recommend an OS for those who care about security and privacy it has to be OpenBSD...

oooh, another Kickstarter lesson learned. Pledges have slowed--except they haven't, not exactly.

The stretch goal ebook freebies are also available as add-on items. As stretch goals are met, people are going into their pledges and removing add-on copies.

Solidly predictable, if I was smart.

So I guess I have to spend time this week trying to work out how I can turn off all the ai shit on the windows machines at work via policy. And also do the same for all the macs.

At least we got slack to acknowledge our opt out.

Finally got around to planting the raspberry and strawberry plants I bought last weekend. Had to weed the planter and top it up with some fresh compost. Timed it great, finished about 15 mins before the rain arrived.
