Last Week Tonight with John Oliver in the latest episode has an urgent piece on the AfD party, extreme-right increasingly widely being recognized as the Fascists and largely even actual Nazis party, which is likely to soon rule its first federal state of Germany and wield a large proportion of control of the EU alongside fellow cryptofascists like Meloni, Le Pen, Orbán, Åkesson, Purra, etc.

@sidepony @b9AcE thanks! I'm glad he's bringing international attention but I feel like the sketch really undersold all the actual literal nazi stuff connected to the AfD. It gave me an impression of "they hate immigrants and used a dogwhistle" rather than "actual ties to literal Hitlerist bands and a growing movement of armed paramilitaries"

Maybe it will help if I state very clearly some of my political stances:

Israel-Palestine:

  1. Anti-Zionist. I’m the grandson of a Palestinian refugee who died without ever being able to go back. I could understand aspects of Zionism until they decided to do the Nakba. It’s been completely unjustifiable since then.

  2. What is happening right now in Gaza is textbook genocide. States that continue to supply Israel with weapons and funds are complicit in genocide, especially the US and Germany.

@ayoub living in Germany as an immigrant from a country destroyed by colonialism, it is kind of scary to see otherwise reasonable, progressive-identified Germans reproducing the very same colonial excuses of the last 500 years, word for word, when defending why it's ok for Israel to exist as an occupation of previously inhabited land, nevermind that genocide is the price.

the occupation is ok because the people living there are retrograde, hostile, murderous barbarians, rapists of good white women, follow an evil religion, do not make good use of the land, oppress one another, need to be forcibly civilised, resist cultural assimilation, this is a terrible thing but such is our burden, usw.

lately I have this experience where I stumble on some niche meme subreddit (say, for absurdist Simpsons jokes), or some weird hyperonline subsubculture (say, postironic gnomecore videos), or a comment thread on a new pop culture hype, and it's just outright fascists. like it's getting hard to not accidentally get exposed to fascist propaganda. Twitter is just fascism now, Substack downright pays actual nazis, Facebook is full of entrysm, and some kids are still trying really hard to make "gamergate 2" be a thing.

I don't know what will happen with the fascist creep in the age of Internet. yesterday i was talking to a social worker who said she thought AfD voters were all old white dudes and was shocked to hear fascist talking points repeated by teenagers. I'm not. the latest Dortmunder skinhead I caught stalking my social media is less than half my age.

If you have the stomach for a tragedy film I urge you to watch Zielona granica ("Green Border", 2023), on the current situation of the Belarus/Poland refugee abuse zone.

This is what they are trying to set up at the Egyptian border for the Palestinians who manage to survive the Israeli attempt at ethnic cleansing; this is what they want to set up in the USA/Mexico border; this is the UK goal with Rwanda; this is what the laws to criminalise sea rescuers aim at with the Mediterranean.

I expect borders and immigration to be the issue of the climate catastrophe age, and the high-tech genocide of Palestinians to be the opening salvo. There won't be space for half-measures and fence-sitting; we all will have to pick our sides, either you fight for open borders--open for all, for people you don't like, for Muslims, ex-cons, sex workers, so-called "economic immigrants"--or you will be complicit in the horror, hoarding the illusion of normalcy watered with the blood that runs down razor wire.

Even establishment Western media is starting to show cracks in the narrative after months of IDF soldiers proudly livestreaming their own war crimes and bragging about it, but German media remains resolutely in DARVO-land.

I wonder if the "abolish Israel last" people have a point where it will be too much, where they'll come to the dawning realisation they were backing a genocide once more; or if this one will also only be understood after a generation or two, another chapter in Erinnerungskultur once it's safely distant as "history stuff".

This was posted by documentary director Yuval Abraham after his speech at the Berlinale, which called for peace in Gaza, was demonised by German politicians and journalists.

In addition to what he's going through, it should be noted that the documentary is co-directed between Abraham (Jewish) and Basel Adra (Palestinian), and the latter is being erased explicitly--politician Claudia Roth went as far as posting on Twitter that her applause at the Berlinale counted only for the former.

I'll be cross-stitching Belarusian-style in honour of Mikita Khilkevich, who got arrested 2 years for pasting anarchist stickers. he was released in October 2023, after enduring things like solitary cell punishment and food/support parcels being destroyed.

antifa and anarchist stickers are a big part of what motivated me to join political movements in Germany; they made me feel safer as a new immigrant. years later I would get into scuffles with neonazis over racist stickers. it is wild to imagine that the sticker wars could have this level of police repression.

Congratulations to Anarchist Black Cross Dresden @abcdd for earning a "linksextremistische Organisation" badge of merit from the State's repression apparatus for their support of anarchists fighting in Ukraine, even as half of Germans stab them in the back and leave people to die due to so-called "anti-militarism". It's not just that another Jewish woman (Hadas) was arrested in Berlin for a sign with the six-pointed star, it's that cops are doing this in name of "fighting anti-semitism." (the Star of David was coloured in Palestine colours.) I wonder how all this will look in the history books.

We all have noticed that they put the most racist cops to police the Gaza protests. They shout insults, humiliate you etc. And there is no reason why German racists would limit their bigotry to Muslims. They must be having a field day, getting to lock up and terrorise Jews in the name of anti-semitism, all while beating up pregnant women, teenagers etc.

At the protest in Bonn I saw a person taken for a sign reading "stop the second Nakba". This while Israeli commentators are openly calling for a second Nakba. lots more are being detained for signs or shouts calling for a stop to genocide. the logic apparently being that if you call what Israel is doing a genocide, you're denying the State's "self-defense" and therefore the unquestionable by law "right to exist". therefore protesting against genocide is a crime in Germany.

and what's heartbreaking to me is that most white leftists are on board with this. spaces and groups that I trusted all flying the "gegen jeden Antisemitismus" + Israel flag emoji...

The Egyptian State building the wall to throw Palestinians tp the IDF should be a reminder that this massacre isn't and never was about religion or culture, but about the violence inherent to a State. Every border is fed with blood.

"What is truly antisemitic is the equating of Zionism with Judaism": Jewish activist Rachel Shapiro arrested today in Berlin after her speech calling for a free Palestine.

"We stand, as a Jewish value, with the oppressed, always", is how she concluded her speech before the German police took her away.

A video of the police taking the activist aside to a van and undressing her. The caption says the member of Jüdische Stimme was arrested after today's sit-in at the Axel-Springer HQ.

If you think you're justified in calling the police on people, for whatever reason, you're on the wrong side. no exceptions.

if a fascist is calling for legal action against Black people and you join in, you're doing fascism too. yes this is about you Kevin.

this also means against harmful people, duh. not saying that this is the case in this subtoot, but in general: even if they're abusive narcissistic predators or whatever euphemisms the Left is using to whitewash eugenics this year, calling the police on harmful people never solves anything. it just means you now have even more harmful people, and further, the extra assholes you added to the situation get to beat, shoot and torture others with legal impunity.

this also applies to people who defend prohibition of anything, including sex work, drugs, and guns. making things illegal just means calling the police on vulnerable people. you can't be anti-State and rely on the police. that's like being antifa and calling the nazis to help you with a different gang of nazis, you empower the nazis in the process. or like being "antifa" and joining a nazi's legal threat against a Black person

To Germans who aren't usually "political" but came out march against the now: Thank you. You made a lot of immigrants and marginalised people feel safer.

Germany has a real, serious problem with Nazis, right now in 2024, bigger than most people think. Many countries in Europe have elected far-right, xenophobic governments, and it can happen here, too.

Going forward, please keep up the fight by supporting immigrants whenever you can, especially people of colour and Middle Easterners who take the brunt of xenophobia. Challenge your German friends when they start talking about assimilation or fearmongering "barbaric Muslims". Don't let anti-semitism go unadressed. Defend immigration vocally.

Think how you can offer personal, emotional, material support for refugees, go to action groups compatible with your interests that offer support for immigrants or work against the fascist creep. There are many ways to help, and you can make a lot of difference for someone. Even something as simple as offering to go together to the Ausländerbehörde or Arbeitsamt and help with bureaucracy and language issues is a huge help. And it can do you good, too; you can make new friends, regain a sense of agency, feel like you're doing something meaningful with your time.

Two escalations from Gaza that affect everyone:

  • I am seeing Israel supporters dismiss outhand all evidence of genocide, both independently verified statistics and haunting IDF videos, as fake news. Also on the side of those opposing the genocide, I've seen uncritical dismissal of any negative reports of POW mistreatment, of anti-semitic attacks on non-settler random Jews etc. as fake news (an attitude that does not actually help the Palestinian struggle, as it buys into settler logic, that every individual has to pass a moral test to justify not having the population eliminated.)

In this way the process we saw starting in Trump 2016 is now fully mainstreamed. If ppl can deny the genocide in Gaza with this many independent observers, mass recordings etc. there's no amount of evidence that can break thru polarisation. Consider that places like Sudan do not have the same ability to document.

  • it is now acceptable for the "civilised" side to directly target hospitals, universities, schools etc. on the "terrorist" side as long as they can claim that terrorists are hiding inside (or underneath). I mean we already saw this process with Turkey justifying targeting Kurdish civil society and, more indirectly, with the War on Terror, but this is further escalation in intensity and blatantness.

antifas: it is fine to feel positive about the massive demos against the AfD this week, but remember: we are the ones supposed to handle the frontline, and the AfD is merely their electoral arm. the nazis will be in the counteroffensive, and are already at it—Die Rechte did a march in the Cottbus area, the Dorstfeld boys were attacking people in Dortmund, doxing of activists continue on Twitter and elsewhere with calls for violence etc.

nazis will continue to try to escalate on the margins like this; catching people coming back from demos, doing rallies in rural places away from the leftist scenes, sending threats to notable individuals and queer/Jewish/Muslim spaces etc. this is where we're needed the most. keep an eye on your scene—and on their scene; find out the names and faces of nearby nazi cadres, groups, politicians; watch out whose blood they're calling for. stay in touch with orgs and friends. crew up, mask up and show up, we got work to do.

it's maddening how most of the information on local nazis that I need to keep tabs on for reasons of personal safety is published by antifas on commercial social media and completely impossible to access, aggregate or filter without freely doxing myself for the state and corporations. (with the aggravant of knowing that the nazis are significantly infiltrated in the police force, schufa etc. so that if the police has a warrant to dig my data from commercial social media, I have to assume the nazis might have the data too.)
