Something I did that closed all my opened tabs in FF. It is liberating I guess, but also sucks because of course I didn't have a bookmark for most of those!

'...a lot of the new #Amiga stuff is fun, some great games, but not on the "wow, if only we could have had this back in the day" level we see on the 8-bit computers or 16-bit consoles...'

Discuss 😁

reidrac,

@TomF @nivrig I make games that I think are fun and are in a good technical level for the system. I don't like technical gimmicks that lead to a "not that fun" game but "how it pushes the system".

You can't make everybody happy, etc

People seem to really have bought into the capitalist version of open source where software is still a product that requires support and marketing and a roadmap and exists to serve a user community separate and apart from the project.

But a whole lot of open source is really just a sharing economy. It’s devs doing something they found useful and deciding to share it rather than hoard it. Those devs don’t owe anyone extra labor just because they chose to share.

reidrac,

@dalias @nihilazo @efraim @calcifer a friend used to say: it is open source, so when it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

That's how I see it as well. The dev doesn't have any responsibility with the users (if any).

Looking at dosemu, it is not maintained and compiling/running it now is problematic. Not good.

What if the real happiness was starting projects, work on them as much as you feel like, and then never finish them?

So tonight I plan to put to rest "the timer 😱 ", for now at least, and start working on the blitter!

Exciting !

  • reidrac,

@psychicparrot42 A Theory of Fun is not a good book. It is a good talk, than the author made a book. And there wasn't enough content for that, so it goes over and over and over the same few ideas.

I was very disappointed when I read it. There are a few ideas to take away, and I found it useful, but as a book is awful.

    reidrac,

@psychicparrot42 actually, this is it: https://www.theoryoffun.com/theoryoffun.pdf

A Theory of Fun (AGC 2003 keynote). That's all the book has to offer.

    reidrac,

@psychicparrot42 mine was an ebook. Oh, well.

    reidrac,

https://gn-tronics.dev/@k @psychicparrot42 I haven't read that one, but the 3-4 I have read weren't good. Between captain obvious and unnecessarily technical to give the topic importance.

    Not trying again 😅

    reidrac,

https://gn-tronics.dev/@k @psychicparrot42 I gave up on books on the topic. There are a few insightful videos on YT though.

May be there's no enough material for average books to shine, and the game design masterpiece doesn't exist yet 🤷

I wrote a bit about the "making a DOS game" thing in here: https://ko-fi.com/post/Starting-a-streaming-series-making-a-DOS-game-L3L5LR6PA

Although I need to write a blog post in, you know, my blog; but just in case I get coffee 😂

Got the #Amstrad #CPC CTM 664-2 monitor out for a photo shoot.

I'm selling it because I don't use it and it should be enjoyed by someone, really.

It is fully working and in pretty good state (unboxed and not serviced, so it is sold "as is").

Say £60 collect only from Bristol (UK); if anyone interested, let me know before I put it on the flea bay.

    (CPC not included 😂)

    Boosts appreciated!

@Fizzychicken I have a soft spot for Ascendancy (DOS version, 1995). I played it a lot back in the day, and I revisited it not long ago with dosbox and it is still fun (if awkwardly flawed).

Share your findings, I wasn't really into 4X, but I played a few.

Hit me with your good reference reads for retro (ie: no 3D API) isometric engines like Head over Heels, Get Dexter, Ultimate games etc. kthx <3

    reidrac,

@nivrig actually, that's something in my TODO list: make a 8-bit game in isometric.

Why did you ask this now? I can't get more projects?! 😂

    reidrac,

@jbzfn @Seirdy there are proposals for some of those: gemini://twins.rocketnine.space/proposals.gmi

The question is if they will get any traction, when people have been very opposed to any "enhancement".

What was first? The chicken or the egg?

I mean, the tracker or the player? I think the tracker is what I need to find first.

    reidrac,

    This one looks promising: http://www.adlibtracker.net

Although in reality is understanding one of the supported formats to see how I can feed the data to the OPL3 emulator via port in my fantasy CPU.

    Easy! 😅

@psychicparrot42 consider the PDF version. It is very cheap; I know is not the same, but I was subscribed like that and for me was very convenient.

  • reidrac,

https://gn-tronics.dev/@k That's were I am at the moment with my fantasy console! 😂

I'm considering an actual OPL2 or OPL3 emulator; but then, in a fantasy console, you probably don't want to know the ins and outs of that hardware.

Perhaps I want just the sound without the complexity 🤔

    reidrac,

@gilesgoat https://gn-tronics.dev/@k because I can "abstract it". So internally I use that to generate the sound, but the user of the console will have a limited set of options. It could even be "select one of these 16 instruments".

But I probably don't know what I'm talking about (yet).

    reidrac,

@gilesgoat https://gn-tronics.dev/@k I have been eyeing an emulator in C that shouldn't be too difficult to integrate with SDL2.

I may just try and see what happens.

    reidrac,

@gilesgoat https://gn-tronics.dev/@k I was planning to use SDL_mixer and I have been reading the TIC-80 code to see how they doing it.

Not trivial, but can be done! (famous last words)

Decided to get a C64 mini as I never owned an actual C64 when I was young and have never played any of the games apart from trying Monty Mole on an emulator once to see how it differed to the speccy version. Currently on offer for £35 on amazon so for less than the price of a new switch game I thought it was worth a punt! What are the best C64 games??? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Koch-Films-GmbH-242390-THEC64/dp/B0764BK6L1/ref=sr_1_4?crid=SLU6SMSP8NQ3&keywords=c64+mini&qid=1683314504&sprefix=c64+mini%2Caps%2C92&sr=8-4

    reidrac,

    @puttycad classic or modern?

    reidrac,

@puttycad Sam's Journey. Briley Witch Chronicles. A Pig Quest. The Shadow over Hawksmill.

That's a good sample of modern C64 games. There are also good modern games free to download and play too.
