I have a sudden mighty nerd to write a parody of Ella Fitzgerald's song "a tisket a tasket" but about debugging a broken kubernetes cluster

I... I just need it, okay? For reasons

@hazelweakly A cover of Trent Reznor's "Hurt" would do it, too.

People usually say that I’m a pleasure to work with and that I’ve a highly collaborative spirit. The fact that I’m good at teamwork doesn’t mean that it comes naturally to me. Quite on the contrary, being a good teammate is a skill that I constantly need to train and refine. The following are things I remind myself on a daily basis, à la Dune’s inner monologues, to be a better teammate at work.

Reading comments about documentation on Hacker News is generally depressing, especially when the only answer is bringing up the same framework all the time. Diataxis has become the "have you tried turning it off and on again" of docs.

My current watch. Such a pretty poster. I just love mature male leads. Hardly get mature female leads, however 😅

The biggest problem of docs-as-code is getting folks to use git. If you do quick edits through the UI, that's fine. For deeper things, it's forking and setting up remotes and then waking up one day to see submodules breaking. It's a mess for many open source projects. And if you're not technical enough, the mere thought of git reset --hard origin/main in the morning can be terrifying.

I name my computers after locations from Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion. My PC is a black tower, so I called it Isengard. My fair MacBook Air is Valinor. The Raspberry Pi is Bree.

I have an Intel MacBook Air from 2020 lying around. What OS should I install on it that's not macOS or Windows? T2-ready distributions fail to detect the WiFi chipset for some reason.

A few days ago I had an interesting conversation on the pros and cons of Markdown for technical documentation with Ed Marsh and Eric Holscherin a webinar hosted by Scott Abel. Here are some of the things I said during the webinar.

@underlap @edmarsh Markdown the tool is OK. It has its uses. It's easy to learn.

Whether it works or not depends on who's going to use it and for what purpose. A tightly-knit team of brilliant people will do wonders with it if they want.

A habit I am starting is to write a short sentence, like a diary entry, in Chinese every day. My writing is horrendous but this is one of the ways I am trying to remember the characters.

@liztai I'm immensely awed every time I see someone writing in Chinese. I want to learn!

(I think I got which characters are "Today" ☺️)

Today in Docs Speak:

"Spray and pray": Publishing docs that you know can't be fully accurate from the start, hoping they'll still be useful.

"Fire and forget": Publishing docs that aren't meant to be revised at a later stage, like release notes.

If you’re shipping a product and that product is more difficult to use than a kazoo, you need the product to communicate to users through UX writing, docs, or both, and create a team in charge of executing the underlying content strategy.
