I wouldnt pay too much attention to the number of servers - 90% of them have only one user or very few users and host no communities of consequence. Most active communities are hosted on about 3 or 4 instances.

In about 6 months all the admins of those tiny instances will be considering paying the bill for the next year of domain / hosting and many are likely to pull the plug.

This process doesn't reflect a weakness of Lemmy IMO, it's just because of a certain amount of centralisation that has happened.

You might want to discuss this in one of the communities at https://ani.social.

Spoiler: not really envy, just the realization that they were too gormless to ever be competitive if they limited themselves to in-house resources.

It's not a 15 (or 25) year commitment - you can sell the house any time and use the money to pay off the mortgage.

It would have been helpful if the rnz article provided some context, like the fact that we spend $2.4 billion per year on the Corrections Department.

$50k / $2.4 bn = 0.002% of the corrections department total spending goes on slushies. It's a drop in a bucket.

The real scandal here is we spend $2.4 bn on prisons.

I don't know an intra-departmental breakdown. That might take some digging.

In the interest.co.nz article I linked to earlier it has a figure of $1.7bn for the year 2017. Big increases in 2018 and 2020. Labour invested heavily in prisons!

I use the Stylus extension to make every website I visit use the same font and text size.

Fuck you, designers!

In the browser it's defined as "system-ui", which inherits whatever the OS uses as it's default font. So web pages look the same as apps.

My OS uses the font called "Ubuntu".

Wow the optics on that drone are very powerful.

FYI the german word for "emotion triggered by a combination of sad, funny and stupid dystopia" is "Traludystopieunglücklichkomik".

ChatGPT told me.

I pop into my Akkoma account every so often. It has all the same content as Mastodon but it does a good job of back-filling replies so I see more of the conversation.

Surely their cars have general-purpose CPUs, not especially suited for this? Don't you need a GPU and gobs of RAM?

This is the kind of inflation that raising interest rates cannot solve. They'll try it anyway.

I've just had a look at the graphs that show federation activity. There is a technical problem that is causing sopuli.xyz, your instance, to receive data from lemmy.world slower than it needs to. Lemmy.world is where most comments and posts come from. This has been going on for over a week and gets worse every day.

You could contact your instance admin about it or ask about it in https://sopuli.xyz/c/meta

If you like Elixer you might enjoy contributing to Akkoma, which is similar to (but better than) Mastodon.

I appreciate the practical suggestions section, there's some great ideas there.

You might be interested in the low bandwidth mode that https://piefed.social has. It can be enabled during login and removes most of the images and Javascript.

Really, developers need new tools to support these values. Our dev tools report on performance and reliability but not on sustainability / energy use / CO2. Our programming frameworks offer flexibility, power and expand-ability but never intentionally constrain our energy / waste / performance. The only exception to this that I've seen is Google App Engine which has some resource utilization limits and a pretty limited ORM that feels like fighting with one hand tied behind my back sometimes.

The Cuban Missile Crisis (Part 6) (s.abcnews.com)

I have already mentioned that on weekends, we, the officers of the regiment’s management, would go to the beach for relaxation. The Cubans were also there relaxing. Relaxation is relaxation, and we drank beer, and perhaps someone left empty beer bottles behind. Whether it was our officers or the Cubans who left them, no one...
