@rolle Hi. I think you said you went with hetzner to store your system directory. Did you take a box or a share ? Is it easy to transfer an existing system dit to it ?
Is it S3 or a regular directory ?

Lately I've learned to say No. I've been too kind and wanting to help everyone. But I'm exhausted and there's a constant risk of burning out. I have to learn it's not rude to say No sometimes. It's a negative word but has often such a positive impact to one's wellbeing. I'm sure I don't hurt anyone's feelings if I just skip fixing a website on my free time etc. It's about time to learn to give myself slack.

I find it strange that wanted to create their own protocol just because the existing ones weren't "good enough". Who's to say everything will always stay the same? We've been having development in every major protocols throughout the history of the Internet, look at http for example.

No, I think they know they won't get enough money or control in any other way than to develop their own. The openness is just a facade here.

I have many questions and doubts about AT and BS (heh, acronym is a sign). Decentralzation and open source don't mean anything if the end goal is make money from users via yet another commercial platform just like Twitter. Fediverse doesn't have those doubts because it's intended to be free (in its all forms, ad-free, bloat-free, monetization-free, big corp free...). may be FOSS, but it will never be FLOSS. Let us talk when I can install it to my server as easily as Mastodon.

Personally for me ActivityPub is perfect. It has its flaws but who's to say it will be forever like this?

@nairb_db You misunderstood my point. I was referring to "memento mori" as in everything dies, not as "you should build your own server"... I meant that a regular user does not care about servers or portability. If a website dies, it dies, and user has to cope. It's always been that way. During the golden era of social media I had over 100 social media accounts. They're all long lost and gone. I have been starting from scratch many many times. It doesn't bother me as an sysadmin, why would it bother the regular user?

In the beginning of 2010 I was registered to over 150 social media sites. The rise of the social media were exciting times. There were rarely any algorithms, no TikTok, no Instagram for Android, no ads on Twitter.

However, over the years everything went to shit. The social media sites died one by one and couple of the dominating players slowly shifted to platforms where your data was no longer yours, where you were the money machine. The sad thing is, most of the people didn't even notice this change.

I'm really hopeful about the rise of the open Internet, , etc. We need this.

@arinbasu @ashwin Yes. I mostly use Mastodon, but Reddit and Instagram are for browsing. I don't really need them and might drop them in some point.
