Ars technica: Apple is going out of its way to make sure Vision Pro doesn’t look dorky

Me: lmao too late

rootfsext2gz,

Apparently Apple Watches aren’t dorky looking… :blobbonethink: yeah that’s sus

rootfsext2gz, to apple

So Apple has come out with an Augmented Reality (AR) headset device which:

  • Costs $3500
  • Lasts 2 hours
  • Doesn't take you to a different world, but treats the world as a massive screen for your apps
  • Said apps are (as of right now) nothing more than just simple iPhone apps

I'm not going to be so stupid as to say it's dead in the water, because as someone who has a Macbook Pro, an iPhone, an iPad, an Apple Watch, Airpods Pro, Airpods Max (because the Airpods Pro keeps falling out of my ears and headphones have better noise cancellation) I get the appeal and the allure to buying the next Apple wotsit.

But this thing? This thing has zero appeal to me. Not just because of the above, but also because it's something I need to strap on my face in front of my eyes and use for (what it was intended for) long periods of time.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if Apple kept on iterating on it to make it a success like they did with the watch - I've shat on the Apple Watch on launch, and here I am wearing it, due to the constant health and fitness features.

But I just cannot see myself being won over with the AR glasses thing. They look goofy (I said that about the Apple Airpods Max, but bought them second hand for £200 cheaper than the asking price so that's why I got them - I still think they look like shit).

As an aside, I also play video games, and the whole Virtual Reality (VR) was something I was looking forward to and was interested... until the scene was on its last legs.

I think products that ask customers to strap something to their eyes for long (15min+) periods of time aren't going to do well in the market. It's why 3DTVs haven't been successful. It's why VR headsets, despite all the song and dance from Valve, Sony, and Meta, still haven't taken off (I know this is AR, but still)

And just one final thing - I can appreciate the desire for conferencing hardware, but we have webcams and mics. They may not be amazing, but they do the job just fine.

Not only that, but after being stuck at home during COVID, I really, really miss human interaction - and this is coming from an introverted person. I don't mind a phone that allows me to quickly communicate to others from a distance. What I won't do is buy a device that encourages isolation (like VR/AR headsets).

Just thinking back to 2016 when r/thedonald was constantly making its way to the top of reddit for years and none of the team at reddit did anything.

Now with these API changes and devs/users making posts actively complaining about what a bad choice it is and how folks are planning to leave reddit en-masse, you barely hear about them despite the threads being heavily upvoted (usually up to something like 100k+ upvotes - usually 3k is enough to get a thread to the frontpage).

I look back on that shitshow in 2016 with even more pennies dropping.

I've been wondering why I've been feeling so low, but I'm realising my head is in the bad space again of negativity again.

Going to just have to ride this one out. Maybe get some exercises in as well...

Sometimes I forget that not everyone (and likely most people on the internet) can't read my mind, and can't tell if I'm in a joking mood or if I'm some person on the internet trying to start a fight for no reason.

It also doesn't help that text strips a lot of extra information that would normally be conveyed through talking, like body language.

Just got to remind myself to be a bit careful and be a bit more thoughtful with my posts, as I think my last gif-related post may have made me look like a nob, when I'm trying to have a friendly joke with (what I feel is) a silly GIF.

Will Virgin Media broadband behave itself today? Lets find out!

rootfsext2gz,

Finally, a place where I can shit on Virgin Media and not have their support team flock in and give (virtually useless) help to try and stop the slander on social media.

rootfsext2gz, to random

Saw a post by a certain Apple blogger (intentionally keeping it anonymous to avoid dog-piling) saying that the people who are anti-subscriptions are a loud group of fanatics (not the exact wording to avoid dog-piling, yet again).

I absolutely get his point that there is no other way to make money, but that is entirely Apple's fault. They could've implemented App Store versioning with support for discounts if you are upgrading or behind the scenes licensing to allow folks to choose cheaper options (e.g. only for iOS/macOS etc via an Apple SDK, and let the SDK manage all the licensing crap while the software developer just handle writing the app).

But no. Apple have aggressively (and I mean aggressively) shoveled the whole IAP and Subscription model down developers throats, and by extension, their customers. Apple gets a sweet cut of continuous money, and the developers have to deal with this backlash that's happening.

Forget about techies for a second - if you think the average Joe is willing to have their paycheck sliced with Apple subscriptions, you are completely out of touch. I know so, so many non techy folks who love their iPhones but hate with a scolding passion the whole subscription model - because it is in everything, even in apps that really cannot justify the costs by e.g. having a server that holds all the data etc.

I used to be a mobile developer (and at some point, I'll need to return back to those projects) and I can tell you I don't know how anyone still does it - in between constantly having to dance to Apple/Google's tune, and then having to turn to your customers - who on average would balk at paying 99p for an app thanks to Apple and Google both driving the value of apps down - and convince them that yes, spending £XX a month/year (usually something like £12/year for cheap indie apps, and £5-£10/mo for well polished apps) is really good for said customer while behind the scenes trying to keep changing the app to meet some of the latest arbitrary stupid requirement that was not needed before...

... I would rather eat glass.

But of course, it's not Apple's or Google's fault for providing us this completely bullshit development cycle... for all of Tim Sweeney's faults (and believe it, it pains me to agree with him even a little), his vendetta against Apple and Google - while it was 100% about making Epic Games the most profit - was something I was secretly in agreement with and secretly rooting for.

With online websites, they can pretty much use any standardized payment processor (Stripe, PayPal) and pay some 1-5% cut on your charge as well as a fixed fee (PayPal informs me it's 30p + 1.2-2.9%). With Apple and Google? 30% of your income. In recent years, Apple and Google have offered to halve it, but it's an opt-in system (like anyone wouldn't want to opt in).

Like I said, I would rather eat glass, and I'm so glad I (temporarily) escaped app development (fwiw, my apps were paid upfront, no subscription. One did OK, the other did quite poorly - both lacked any sort of strong marketing, but I'm happy with both).

The “Fuck you. Download the app/make an account” is such an annoying dark pattern, that makes me want to just fuck off your site forever

@robotmonkeys 100% agree, it's what finally turned me off from reddit.

, 's Twitter competitor, will be ready by summer.

And lest you believe integration was just some rumour, think again. In a slide, Meta confirms that Barcelona will indeed be decentralized and will be compatible with Mastodon.

Everyone who thought that AT protocol would easily win over ActivityPub, and that would kill Mastodon just because a few influencers joined doesn't understand the sheer marketing power and pull that Meta has at its disposal.

But believe me, I'm not exactly cheering on Meta here. Generally, where Meta goes, shenanigans happen. I simply don't think Meta is capable of releasing a product without dark patterns.

Nevertheless, I don't think the Fediverse is even close to preparing for what will happen once Barcelona starts federating.

We should all be taking Barcelona very seriously.

rootfsext2gz,

@atomicpoet @socialmedianews I'm so glad you are taking this seriously. I've seen some utterly bizzarre takes that makes me think the person whose post I read has either not been around long enough to not know the cycle, or they are being deliberately obtuse because we must pRaIsE tHe EnGiNeErS or something like that.

Does calckey have any means of defederating from servers? I've still got my Mastodon hat on when it comes to behind the scenes stuff, so it would be super cool to know if this was possible or not (no worries if it isn't though, I'm sure it can get supported soon!)

is now allowing people to comment with GIFs.

The Verge doesn't like this and bemoans the death of thoughtful analysis. I'm sorry... what?

When did Instagram ever have thoughtful analysis in the comment section? Most of the comments I ever got on Instagram were 🔥emoji, and "Looking good!"

Meanwhile, here on the , we've had GIF comments for ages, and the reputation we have is that we're all overly-serious folks!

Hey, even allows you to make MFM animations!

I don't think GIFs have anything to do with how "thoughtful" and "analytical' a social media comment might be.

Elon Musk says that he'll tweet what he wants even if it costs him money.

Funny that.

I left because I want to post what I want -- and now I'm paying for Fediverse servers out of my own pocket precisely because Elon won't let other folks tweet what they want.

I'm very happy that, in my small way, I'm costing Elon money.
