I’ve got a bunch of random servers hosting random things and I think I’d like to move them home due to increases in hosting prices. Anyone have thoughts on NAS devices?

I run software like PhotoPrism, Pixelfed, Plex, mostly

ryanfb,
@ryanfb@digipres.club avatar

@skinnylatte fwiw, I love my Synology as a NAS, but feel like unless you pay serious serious money for the beefy CPU variant of a unit, running other services on one has too many performance issues - so what I use instead is a Synology NAS just as a NAS for file storage, and all my services in Docker on other computers that have more compute. Biggest gamechanger for self-hosting for me personally lately is the ease of using Tailscale for personal VPN.

April 25th, 251 BCE—Apollonios writes to Zenon , saying that the king keeps demanding gifts for his crown, and commanding Zenon to "turn night into day" (νύκτα ἡμέραν ποιούμενος) working all hours in order to ship enough gifts to the king within a 3 day deadline

April 14th, 206 CE— Artemisia hires Isidora and two other castanet dancers to perform at a festival at her house in Philadelpheia. They will be paid 36 drachmai per day, plus 4 artabai of barley and 20 pairs of bread loaves.

@slothrop FWIW this is Ptolemaic coinage in Roman Egypt, the value could vary wildly over time and conversion to modern currency is somewhat fraught (which is all to say, figuring out the value of a drachma is complicated and depends on time and place)

April 7th 216 CE—Pakysis kept a pantry on the second floor of his daughter-in-law's house, and it was discovered that the tenants below him had been stealing grain through a hole in the floor. He petitions a centurion to make them pay it back.

"ridiculous heist plots in the papyri" might be a small corpus, but it's one of my favorites

ryanfb,
@ryanfb@digipres.club avatar

In this heist-papyrus from 190 CE, a woman deduces that robbers were able to steal 10 artabae of wheat from their house by breaking in through the window and lowering the bales out of the same window with a rope, because it left rope fibers on the sill: https://papyri.info/ddbdp/p.oxy;1;69 (translation from John Garrett Winter, Life and Letters in the Papyri, 1933, p. 110)

April 1st, 278CE— the strategos of the Oxyrhynchite nome writes to his subordinates to inform them that all cultivators along the Nile are ordered to build levees in order to withstand the coming floods. Cultivators are not allowed to pay anyone to do the work for them, they must do it themselves.

Is it possible to make a shell script that would like, take videos downloaded to a folder, and automatically add captions? Like Vidcap but automated? https://apps.apple.com/us/app/vidcap-auto-video-captions/id1620725834

ryanfb,
@ryanfb@digipres.club avatar

@misc fwiw I do this pretty frequently with whisperX https://github.com/m-bain/whisperX - I just have a simple for loop that loops through common video extensions, then auto-transcribes anything without an existing .srt. Can make a gist in a bit

ryanfb,
@ryanfb@digipres.club avatar

@misc here's a version which you should be able to tweak to get what you need: https://gist.github.com/ryanfb/b974f502939c27b3967607423e50e23f

ryanfb,
@ryanfb@digipres.club avatar

@misc one more trick for this - if you’re using it with audio that tends to have predictable mistakes in transcription that you want to fix, make a .sed file with common corrections and run it automatically after transcription

ryanfb,
@ryanfb@digipres.club avatar

@misc also by default, this'll output an srt, vtt, json, tsv, AND plain txt representation of the transcription, so you should be good to go

I don't know who needs to hear this but , which is running a forked version of Mastodon, does not from the source code appear to have appropriate mitigations in place for CVE-2023-36460, which theoretically allows attackers to create and overwrite any file Mastodon has access to, allowing Denial of Service and arbitrary Remote Code Execution https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2023-36460 (probably other CVE's as well, but some rely on federation which Truth Social doesn't use?)

ryanfb,
@ryanfb@digipres.club avatar

Still surprising to me that nobody’s been particularly interested in the fact that this social media company, Truth Social, is built on a platform that is now either once again knowingly violating its AGPL license terms for Mastodon and lying in public filings about it, or has public security vulnerabilities you could drive a bus through https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-media-stock-price-crash-spac-djt-truth-social-2024-4
