Hmm... was pondering a bicycle ride to the donut shop to get some exercise in and thinking that would be cross-purpose to the whole activity. 😂

My cycling range now has expanded and there are four donut shops I could select from, LOL.

@ai6yr In we have a yearly group ride during the Atlanta Cycling Festival called the donut ride! TL;DR they go to 3 or 4 different donut places around the city. The hardcore people get a donut at each of them (I do not do that part lest I vomit)!

For #WorldBicycleDay, I’ll post this picture in answer to one of the most frequent questions I get about biking: “But how do you get groceries?” My #CargoBike is large but can hold five full grocery bags up front with no problem, and two more on the back rack if needed. You can do it! It’s easy if you try. #BikeTooter

sam,

@marcprecipice hell, I get a full grocery shop done on a non-cargo bike. I don't get why it's always groceries, those are easy!

I actually don't know how to send PGP encrypted emails. Looked at a guide for thunderbird, I do not have enough mental capital for that rn.

A interesting organization asked for emails to be encrypted, and I am not even going to write them 😢

sam,
@sam@social.coop avatar

@zelf @douginamug out of curiosity, what's wrong with ProtonMail? I've never used it but people have told me it's an easier way to do secure email, so I assumed that would be good?

Also, happy to help setup PGP for Thunderbird if anyone needs. It really is an unbelievable PITA, the whole system is so unbelievably bad and it drives me nuts that security people never actually consider "is my user interface easy to use without accidentally doing things wrong and compromising the whole system".

Hmm, random cycling/BikeTooter opinions wanted -- I have two bicycles in need of new tires/tubes... mountain bikes... rotted... which are NOT currently ridden (but every so often someone gets the urge to ride them). The (adult) kids occasionally would ride them.

Buy "any old tires"? Whatever the LBS carries? Opinions? Thinking they ought to be maintained in rideable condition, vs. a last minute go-buy-new-tires-tubes and then whoever it was that wanted to ride them loses interest. What would you do?

sam,
@sam@social.coop avatar

@ai6yr on the rare occasion that they are ridden, how are they ridden? If it's just around the neighborhood or over some light grass or gravel on occasion I wouldn't spend money on anything nice. Get something crappy but cheap. If you're not going out and doing extreme cross country races or jump trails or whatever it will be fine.

After a few false starts (oops, there were multiple more inspectors than I realized and they made me turn it back off for a bit) I finally got the permission to operate for my #solar install today! Of course for the first day I can operate it legally it would be cloudy and overcast, but it's also cool(ish) so my power requirements should remain low!

A graphic showing 8 solar panels. They all are displaying various What hours ranging from 5 to 7 depending on how much the individual panels have generated today. At the bottom it says "Production 0.04 kWh".

Hi all! If you're in New York City, the #REI union is planning a rally on Thursday May 23rd, go out and show them some support! They'd love to have a contingent of real cooperatives if possible, so get your co-ops together and show them some love!

They're also running this petition this week since it's REI's big yearly sale: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/tell-the-rei-board-stop-union-busting-bargain-a-fair-contract

Is there a word for "creator owned" co-ops where the ownership isn't held by employees, but isn't held by the consumer either? IE. what is social.coop? Does platform co-op cover it, or is there something more specific in wide use already?

I guess creator co-op is fine, I just don't know if it's actually in wide spread use.

sam,
@sam@social.coop avatar

@GuerillaOntologist actually, maybe social.coop was a bad example since the consumer and the creator are largely the same. What about eg. a podcasting host owned by the podcasters who put their shows on it? They are not (by and large) the consumers who pay the co-op money for subscriptions or whatever, but neither are they employees (and the company could have non-member employees)?

sam,
@sam@social.coop avatar

@nemobis the place I was actually thinking of has separate employees who are not owners, social.coop was a bad example

Ones I use include:

American Science & Surplus: https://sciplus.com/

Stonemountain & Daughter https://stonemountainfabric.com/

Davis Food Co-op (not mail order, but you can still do "curbside" pick-up) https://davisfood.coop/

@DemonHusky @esnyder @meganL +1 for McMaster-Carr. I live near one of their facilities so I can just drive out there to pick up anything I order. It used to be that "shipping" was some guy from the factory showing up in his personal car on his way home from work with your stuff in the trunk. They do normal shipping with UPS or whomever these days, but it was always fun. Also if you ask sometimes they'll custom make some of the things they do in house if they don't have the measurements you need.

@DemonHusky @esnyder @meganL (they also sell some weird stuff you wouldn't expect like these awesome factory-floor cargo-trikes: https://www.mcmaster.com/products/tricycles/ )

What payment methods do people frequently use that can be signed up for without an app?

So far I've tried:
Zelle but it's not supported by my bank or credit union, cashapp but it doesn't have a webapp and requires iphone or android, venmo thinks my phone number isn't a mobile one (presumably they don't allow verification with VOIP numbers, but that's all I have).

This is why I'll never successfully be able to run a small business.

Can you spot the difference? Yes, the day is finally here (well, technically it's not yet, the electrician is coming out to do the interconnect with Georgia Power tomorrow)! I'm so excited that GeorgiaBright (free loans for solar installs if you're below a certain income threshold so you don't have any upfront payment) made this possible for me, I never thought I'd be able to do it!

The same small white house, but now the right half of the roof is covered in solar panels.
