Sweeping lighthouse beams to be replaced by LEDs
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c6pxl87nxk3o

South Walney Lighthouse, which is owned and run by Lancaster Ports rather than Trinity House, changed to LED several years ago, I did miss seeing the beam sweep across the saltmarsh on a clear, still night

@sarahdalgulls@ecoevo.social avatar

Also the fact it wasn't a Trinity House lighthouse is one of the reasons why it was the only lighthouse in the country to have a woman as principal keeper, the legendary Peggy Braithwaite - Trinity House wouldn't employ women, but Lancaster Ports were happy for her to inherit the role from her father (and grandfather)

Brilliant news - Sandeel fisheries closed in the English North Sea.

Sandeels are the primary food source for most of our seabirds, who are struggling massively. This is a huge win!

In the UK, seasonal breeding bird protection work for the summer is currently being advertised (eg https://www.environmentjob.co.uk/jobs/99460-holme-beach-warden), these roles are great for those just starting out in a conservation career.

Absolutely losing it after discovering what3words took control of the whatfreewords domain by arguing that "three" and "free" are indistinguishable when spoken.

sarahdalgulls,
@sarahdalgulls@ecoevo.social avatar

@jonty hate hate hate W3W. I work in ecology and use GIS, I have Natural England asking if drone imagery can be referred to by W3W, people wanting to switch to it in biological data recording instead of the existing very very good and useful UK's Ordnance Survey co-ordinate reference system.

W3W just seems to have replaced the OS in people's heads. They don't understand why I can't use it in GIS. It's a nightmare. I cannot wait for W3W to go bust.

A great article on the relationship between Honeyguide Birds and humans. the birds recognise specific calls given by humans who want to find a bee's nest; the birds find the nest, the humans open it for the honey and the honeyguides get to eat the wax

lovely walk today with friends along the Northumbrian Coast, frustating and sad to see the parish noticeboard (that you have to have a key to put up fliers) had "covid is a hoax - google chemtrails and the great darkening" posters

Mastodon how to:

  1. Follow people. Follow follow follow. Your feed doesn't get busy until you are following about 200 people. When you see a post you like, follow whoever posted it. Do this for all posts - you can always unfollow later

  2. Hashtags. put hashtag your posts and look for hashtags you are interested in, then repeat 1 - follow people who post on those hashtags. Also put hashtags in your profile. Remember to use & capitalise each word, helps people who use screenreaders

Promised Tyne Bridge repair funding still not received

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy7r4gg7xd9o

If this is the way one of the most iconic bridges in the biggest city in the North East is treated, I feel sad for structures like the Tees Transporter that are even more neglected and forgotten, yet just as (or more) important

sarahdalgulls,
@sarahdalgulls@ecoevo.social avatar

meanwhile, the Department for Transport tweeted this today. Roads in London, a Network North project.
