    @Migueldeicaza @gruber @markv @schwa There are a lot of incentives to deem an API “private” when your decision isn’t transparent or reviewable. Some of them are noble and good, some of them (ranging from laziness to greed) aren’t. The problem is that we can’t tell, and unless the FTC is proposing to open a Federal Bureau of Interfaces…

    I have to say that, while @Techmeme is one of the best tech news aggregators and resources out there, the amount of space it devotes to cryptocurrency and blockchain is baffling. Verging on a cult-like devotion to that technology.

    The network effect for is gaining some serious momentum right now. As more services adopt the protocol, more people, more communities and more content are added to the network making it increasingly more valuable for everyone. This will only accelerate in the coming months as Threads, Wordpress, Tumblr, Flipboard and others federate.

    We're still in early innings but there's no way to put this genie back in the bottle. The open social Web / the is going to be huge.

    @mike @NatureMC @albertcardona The irony here is that rando Mastodon instances (or really anything that supports AP) actually pose a much bigger problem for Meta via Threads than the reverse.

    scribandotcom,
    @scribandotcom@mastodon.social avatar

    @albertcardona @mike @NatureMC Federation is a two-way street. Now content from any Mastodon instance, for example, is visible to Threads’ users. The amount of trust and safety work those instances’ mods do is…let’s say it varies widely. Meta has to figure out how to deal with CSAM, scams, and disinformation coming from sources it doesn’t control, or have a ton of information about.

    Downloaded my archive and deleted my main Twitter account. As much as I loved the folks I followed, it was totally indefensible to keep that account active, even though I'd locked it down and hadn't posted but a handful of times since the summer.

    Today's the first anniversary of Ari Fleischer stopping his dumb "live" tweeting of September 11, 2001 because now the Saudis are paying him for his "public relations expertise."

    A blessed day to all those who celebrate.

    @hacks4pancakes @dangoodin I suspect we, and the folks I imagine we're most disappointed in, are very on top of this issue so it seems extremely cut-and-dried. Unfortunately, my guess is that there are far more people who are barely aware of what's happening at all, and they're the ones many folks who do know better depend upon for their livelihoods.

    @SteveBellovin @w7voa Of course this is all based on some nonsense ginned up by Parents Defending Education. It's another GOP dark-money funded propaganda outfit designed to funnel money to Republican-aligned law firms and provide "research" for GOP hacks.

    I wonder if folks who're still posting to Twitter realize that they're basically posting on the equivalent of a Fox News or Breitbart social network? Twitter has become another part of the GOP media apparatus. Its owner works hand-in-glove with GOP politicians and other assorted flacks on the same project. He scratches their backs, and they scratch his.

    Today would be a good day to remind folks around you that the GOP’s hateful rhetoric toward the LGBTQ community leads directly to terror and murder.

    Just a sample of what the latest anti-LGBTQ murderer was listening to:

    Travis lkeguchi (who murdered a Southern California shop owner because she was flying a pride flag on her store) retweeted @OANN "LGBTQ Activists Chant ‘We’re Coming For Your Children’ At NYC Drag March"
    Travis lkeguchi (who murdered a Southern California shop owner because she was flying a pride flag on her store) retweeted US Senator @Eric Schmitt "Far too many Americans are being told what they can say and what they can hear. Censorship is on the rise is America—and it’s being done under the guise of controlling 'misinformation' or 'disinformation'—but the goal is still the same: power and control."

    ETA, it's Brandeis, "we can have democracy in this country or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of the few, but we can’t have both"
